THC may feel sedating and has limited short-term evidence for sleep problems linked to conditions such as chronic pain or multiple sclerosis, but it is intoxicating and neither cannabinoid is an established treatment for primary insomnia. CBD is not intoxicating by itself, yet it can interact with medicines, increase drowsiness, and intensify the effects of oral THC.
If insomnia persists, look for causes such as sleep apnea, medication effects, pain, mood disorders, or circadian-rhythm problems instead of replacing a medical assessment with a gummy or oil.

CBD and THC are different compounds
Cannabis contains many cannabinoids, but CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) are the two most discussed for sleep. Their effects, risks, and legal and regulatory status are not interchangeable.

|---|---|---|
| Does it cause a high? | CBD is not intoxicating by itself. | THC is the cannabinoid associated with the marijuana high and can impair attention, reaction time, coordination, and judgment. |
| Evidence for sleep | Insufficient evidence supports CBD as a treatment for any sleep disorder. A small number of studies suggest possible effects in selected situations, but results are not consistent. | Short-term improvements have mainly appeared in people whose sleep problems were connected to conditions such as chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, or obstructive sleep apnea. This does not establish THC as a treatment for primary insomnia. |
| Interactions | CBD can affect other medicines and increase sedation. Oral CBD can also make THC effects stronger. | THC can add impairment and sedation, especially with alcohol, sedatives, or other drugs that slow brain activity. |
| FDA approval | The FDA has approved only prescription Epidiolex for specified severe seizure disorders, not consumer CBD products for sleep. | No THC product is FDA-approved as an over-the-counter treatment for insomnia. |
| Product reliability | Many consumer products have uncertain contents, dose consistency, and unproven medical claims. | Strength, labeling accuracy, and contaminant controls vary among unregulated or state-regulated products. |
Products labeled “CBD sleep,” “THC sleep,” or “balanced CBD:THC” therefore should not be treated as equivalent medicines. A product’s ratio does not predict how you will respond, and CBD does not reliably cancel THC’s intoxicating effects.

What the sleep evidence actually shows
A 2020 review found insufficient evidence for any sleep disorder
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health summarized a 2020 review that included 12 studies and 250 participants. It concluded that evidence was insufficient to support cannabinoid therapy for treating any sleep disorder. Most studies had moderate-to-high risk of bias, meaning their design or execution could have exaggerated apparent benefits or failed to account for other explanations.
That conclusion applies broadly: it does not prove that every person will fail to notice a sedating effect, but it means there is no reliable basis for recommending CBD or THC as a general sleep treatment.
National Academies found limited, illness-related short-term benefits
A National Academies review examined 19 trials involving 3,231 participants with chronic pain or multiple sclerosis who reported sleep outcomes. Eleven trials were judged high risk of bias, six had uncertain risk, and only two were considered low risk. Measured improvements were small, and the evidence primarily involved nabiximols, a prescription medicine containing THC and CBD, rather than ordinary retail gummies or oils.
The moderate evidence for short-term improvement was concentrated in sleep problems associated with obstructive sleep apnea, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, or multiple sclerosis. These findings cannot be extended to people with primary insomnia, whose main problem is insomnia itself rather than pain or another illness.

A four-week CBD and melatonin trial was not proof of a treatment
One randomized four-week trial enrolled 1,793 adults with sleep-disturbance symptoms and compared 15 milligrams of CBD, 5 milligrams of melatonin, and combinations. The publication itself stated that clinical evidence for CBD and sleep remains limited. A four-week study of symptoms does not establish long-term effectiveness, safety, or benefit for a diagnosed sleep disorder, and results from a particular formulation and dose cannot be assumed to apply to every retail product.
One chronic-pain study illustrates why context matters
In a trial involving people with chronic pain, CBD alone improved self-reported sleep compared with placebo, while a THC/CBD combination did not show a statistically clear sleep benefit. The participants did not represent a primary-insomnia population. A result in people whose sleep is disrupted by pain therefore cannot answer whether CBD will help someone whose insomnia has no identified medical trigger.
Will CBD make you sleepy?
Some people report feeling calmer or drowsy after CBD, while others notice no sleep effect. The available evidence does not show a dependable, dose-specific sleep response that clinicians can use to treat insomnia. Drowsiness may also result from another ingredient, an inaccurately labeled product, alcohol, a prescription medicine, or the resolution of anxiety rather than a direct sleep-promoting action.

CBD can increase sedation when combined with alcohol or medicines that slow brain activity. The FDA warns that this combination can cause sedation and drowsiness severe enough to increase the risk of injuries. A person who feels sleepy after a CBD product should not drive, operate machinery, or assume that the product is harmless simply because it is sold without a prescription.

CBD can also affect how other medicines work. The risk depends on the medicine, dose, formulation, and the person’s health. Anyone taking prescription or over-the-counter drugs should ask a pharmacist or clinician to check for interactions before trying CBD, rather than stopping a medicine independently.
Does THC help you fall asleep?
THC can make some people feel sleepy and may shorten the time they believe it takes to fall asleep. That subjective effect is not the same as a proven treatment for insomnia. Controlled and clinical evidence is limited, short term, and concentrated in people whose sleep is affected by another condition.
THC is intoxicating. Even when it helps someone fall asleep, it can impair memory, balance, reaction time, and judgment. A person may also develop tolerance, need more to obtain the same sensation, or experience anxiety, unpleasant thoughts, or next-day impairment. Stopping regular use can itself disturb sleep for a period of time.
Combining THC and CBD does not guarantee a smoother or safer experience. Controlled oral research found stronger drug effects when CBD and THC were taken together than with THC alone. The timing and formulation matter: edible products can take longer to act and last longer than expected, making accidental overconsumption more likely.

Are CBD sleep gummies safe?
“Natural,” “hemp-derived,” and “sleep” on a label do not establish safety or effectiveness. The FDA says many consumer CBD products have unknown quality and unproven medical claims. A gummy may contain more or less CBD than stated, include THC despite a low-THC claim, or contain other ingredients that have not been evaluated for your situation.
Main safety concerns
- Liver injury: The FDA identifies liver injury as a potential CBD risk. The risk may depend on dose, duration, and other medicines or health conditions.
- Drug interactions: CBD can change the effects or blood levels of medicines. A pharmacist can review your complete medication list, including supplements.
- Excess sedation: Alcohol, sleep medicines, anti-anxiety medicines, opioid pain medicines, and other drugs that slow brain activity can add to CBD- or THC-related drowsiness and impairment.
- Unpredictable THC exposure: Even a product marketed as CBD may contain THC or enough of it to cause intoxication, a positive drug test, or impaired driving.
- Delayed edible effects: Oral products may take time to be felt. Taking more because an initial dose seems ineffective can lead to an unexpectedly intense and prolonged effect.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: The FDA strongly advises against CBD, THC, or marijuana during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
When to seek urgent help
Seek urgent medical help for severe confusion, inability to stay awake, trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, severe agitation, or a suspected overdose. Contact a clinician promptly for jaundice, dark urine, unusual abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or other possible signs of liver injury after CBD use.

The FDA states: “The FDA has approved only one CBD product, a prescription drug product to treat seizures associated with Lennox Gastaut syndrome (LGS), Dravet syndrome (DS), or tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) in people one year of age and older.” That product is Epidiolex. Its approval for specified seizure disorders does not approve consumer CBD oils, capsules, or gummies for sleep.

How to think about CBD versus THC for a sleep problem
If you have occasional difficulty sleeping
First check short-term triggers: late caffeine or alcohol, irregular sleep timing, illness, stress, travel, pain, or a new medicine. Avoid adding a cannabinoid while also changing several other variables, because you will not know what caused a benefit or side effect. Never combine a new CBD or THC product with alcohol or another sedating substance.
If insomnia lasts or keeps returning
Persistent insomnia deserves an assessment rather than indefinite self-treatment. Ask about snoring or gasping, restless legs, pain, mood symptoms, medication effects, shift work, and an irregular sleep schedule. A clinician can evaluate for sleep apnea and other causes and discuss proven behavioral insomnia treatment. Do not substitute a cannabinoid for that evaluation.
If you are considering a product anyway
- Write down every prescription medicine, over-the-counter drug, supplement, and alcohol or cannabis product you use.
- Ask a pharmacist or clinician about interactions, liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and your personal risk of impairment.
- Check whether the label clearly states CBD and THC amounts per serving and whether independent testing is available; treat missing or unverifiable information as a warning sign.
- Do not drive, cycle in traffic, care for a child alone, or operate equipment after using a product until you know whether it impairs you.
- Stop and seek advice if you develop severe drowsiness, confusion, anxiety, vomiting, or other concerning symptoms.
Questions a product label cannot answer
- Will this formulation improve the cause of my insomnia, or merely make me feel sedated?
- Is the advertised CBD amount accurate, and is THC present?
- Could this interact with my prescriptions or alcohol?
- How long will an edible effect last, and will I be impaired the next morning?
- Am I using it during pregnancy or breastfeeding, when FDA advice is to avoid cannabinoids?
These questions explain why a single “best CBD-to-THC ratio” cannot be recommended from the available evidence. The studies used different populations, formulations, doses, and follow-up periods, and the strongest signals were in illness-related sleep disturbance rather than primary insomnia.

Bottom line
CBD has not been shown to reliably improve sleep for the general population, and THC’s sedating feeling is not proof that it treats insomnia. Limited short-term benefits have mainly been reported when sleep problems accompany conditions such as chronic pain or multiple sclerosis, often with a prescription THC/CBD medicine rather than a retail gummy. CBD can cause liver injury, interact with medicines, and increase sedation; oral CBD may intensify THC. FDA approval is limited to Epidiolex for specified seizure disorders, not consumer sleep products. For ongoing insomnia, identify the underlying cause and use clinician-guided, evidence-based treatment instead of assuming that a CBD or THC label makes a product safe.
