Where does Boruto take place in the timeline?
After the original Naruto story
The opening of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations follows the conclusion of Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden. Naruto is now the Seventh Hokage, and the villages are living in the peace that followed the Shinobi World War. Boruto grows up inside that success rather than alongside Naruto as a fellow rookie. His frustrations, ambitions, and family conflicts are consequences of Naruto’s new responsibilities as village leader.
The Naruto Official Site identifies 2016 as the beginning year for the Boruto story lead-in. That is a publication or franchise marker, not a claim that the plot itself begins in the calendar year 2016. The in-universe chronology is best understood relationally: the first Boruto phase follows Naruto’s completed story, and Two Blue Vortex follows the first phase.
The move to Two Blue Vortex
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is the post-time-jump continuation. Official pages confirm a substantial change in the status quo between the two phases, but they do not state an exact number of elapsed years. The frequently repeated “three-year time skip” is a secondary description, not an elapsed-time figure confirmed by the official pages cited here. Treat it as an interpretation unless a specific chapter or edition provides a dated statement.

Which Naruto characters remain important?
Naruto Uzumaki
Naruto is Boruto’s father and the Seventh Hokage. His role is different from his role as the original series’ young protagonist: he is now responsible for the village’s administration, security, and future. That position creates the family tension at the heart of Boruto’s early characterization. Boruto is not simply trying to imitate a famous parent; he is reacting to the demands that the Hokage’s job places on their household.
Naruto’s completed journey also provides the political backdrop for the sequel. The relative peace in the Hidden Leaf is an achievement of his generation, and the new generation inherits both its benefits and its vulnerabilities.
Sasuke Uchiha
Sasuke remains a direct Naruto-era connection and becomes Boruto’s teacher. In an official Q&A, artist Mikio Ikemoto explains that Boruto follows Sasuke after Sasuke leaves the village as a rogue ninja and begins calling him “Master.” Their relationship gives Boruto access to knowledge and experience outside the Hokage’s household, while linking the sequel to Sasuke’s long-running arc of exile, return, and responsibility.
For readers of Naruto, Sasuke’s presence is more than a cameo. His mentorship shows how the previous generation’s conflicts have been transformed into instruction for the next one.
Himawari Uzumaki
Himawari is Boruto’s sister and another important family bridge. The official Q&A states that she has both Uzumaki and Hyuga blood, and that those factors work synergistically with Kurama’s chakra. This connection ties the sequel’s family story to two major Naruto lineages and to the legacy of the Nine-Tails.

Her significance is therefore biological, historical, and emotional: she belongs to Naruto’s household, carries Hyuga ancestry through her mother’s side, and represents how abilities and legacies can combine in the next generation.
Boruto Uzumaki
Boruto is Naruto’s son, but the sequel treats him as the central protagonist rather than as a younger version of his father. He enters the Ninja Academy in a world where the shinobi system is changing. His family name gives him status, expectations, and access, while his father’s duties create personal distance. Those circumstances distinguish his starting point from Naruto’s childhood and explain why the sequel’s conflicts cannot simply repeat the original hero’s path.
How are Boruto and Kawaki connected?
Kawaki is Boruto’s central counterpart in the later story. Shueisha’s official synopsis identifies both boys and says that their fates are reversed by the godlike power called Omnipotence. This is a canon mechanism within the story, not a metaphor for a disagreement or a simple change of allegiance.
The reversal affects how the world understands the two boys and turns their relationship into the foundation of the post-time-jump conflict. To understand Two Blue Vortex, readers need to remember that the issue is not only what Boruto and Kawaki personally believe. Their identities, public positions, and relationships with the village have been reshaped by Omnipotence.
Because this development changes the status quo established in Next Generations, reading the two phases in order is important. Starting with Two Blue Vortex can make the characters’ positions seem arbitrary because the earlier events that establish their bond and rivalry have been skipped.

Is Boruto canon to Naruto?
Yes. The official manga sequence treats Boruto: Naruto Next Generations and Boruto: Two Blue Vortex as the continuation of the Naruto continuity. VIZ credits Masashi Kishimoto with creation and supervision, Mikio Ikemoto with art, and Ukyo Kodachi with the script for Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. The Naruto Official Site also presents the earlier Boruto story as the lead-in to Two Blue Vortex.
“Canon” can become confusing because the franchise exists in more than one format. The safest reference for the continuing storyline is the official manga order. Anime episodes are adaptations and may have their own release schedule, additional material, or different pacing. That does not make the anime irrelevant; it means that a question about the exact sequence of the ongoing manga should be answered from the manga rather than from an episode list.
Manga and anime: which version should you use?

If your priority is the canonical order of the continuing story, choose the manga. If you prefer voice acting, motion, and music, the anime can provide a different way to experience the same franchise, but check the release listing for the exact material you want.

If you have never read Naruto
Begin with the original Naruto story and continue through Naruto: Shippuden. Boruto assumes that Naruto’s rise to Hokage, the post-war peace, and the major family relationships are meaningful background. You can start Boruto without that history, but you will lose much of the context behind Naruto’s duties, Sasuke’s mentorship, and the Uzumaki-Hyuga family connection.
If you have finished Naruto
Start at volume 1 of the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations manga. This is the cleanest entry point into Boruto’s generation and avoids learning the later status quo before seeing how it develops.

If you have finished the first Boruto phase
Move to Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. Do not treat it as an alternate sequel or reboot. It is the post-time-jump continuation, and the reversal involving Boruto and Kawaki depends on events from the preceding phase.
Official editions and publication details
VIZ lists the collected Boruto: Naruto Next Generations manga and later Two Blue Vortex volumes. For a physical starting point, volume 1 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations follows the intended beginning of the continuation. Availability, language, retailer stock, and digital rights vary by territory, so verify the edition offered in your region.
Shueisha’s official BORUTO—NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS—STORY GUIDE is a separate reference publication. Its print release date is June 4, 2026, and its ISBN is 978-4-08-885075-7. It can help readers review the setting and characters, but it does not replace reading the two manga phases in sequence.
