No. Bluey’s Quest for the Gold Pen is a single-player game. The official Nintendo Switch listing specifies “Single system (1),” and the publisher, Steam, and Xbox listings all classify it as single-player. A second controller, a different Switch play mode, or another account does not add a local co-op player.
The short answer: there is no supported local multiplayer
If you are asking whether two people can play Bluey’s Quest for the Gold Pen together on one console, the answer is no based on the official product listings available for the game’s 2026 release. Nintendo lists one player on one Switch system. Nintendo Australia likewise lists one local player. PM Studios labels the title “Single Player,” while the Steam and Xbox store pages also identify it as single-player.

That means the game does not provide a two-player campaign, shared-screen co-op, a second playable Bluey, or a versus mode. Connecting another Joy-Con, Pro Controller, or Xbox controller cannot change the supported player count. The game is designed for one person to control Bluey at a time.

The wording matters because “local” can describe either a player count or a hardware mode. In this case, the listings use “local” to mean one player on the local system, not cooperative play. There is no official co-op option to enable in a menu.

What the official listings say on each platform
The available platform pages are consistent. They do not list online multiplayer or local co-op, and none advertises a second-player mode.
| Platform or listing | Published player information | What that means for co-op |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | “No. of players: Single system (1)” | One player; no local co-op is indicated. |
| Nintendo Australia | “Local: 1” | Confirms one local player on Switch. |
| Steam | Single-player; release shown as May 28, 2026 | No co-op mode is listed. |
| Xbox | Single player; Xbox Series X|S and PC play | No shared local or online player mode is listed. |
| PM Studios | Explicitly classified as “Single Player” | The publisher’s classification is a one-player product. |
Store pages can change as products receive updates, and a regional page may display information differently. The official listings reviewed agree with one another, however, and provide no co-op listing. It is therefore more accurate to treat the game as single-player than to assume that an unlisted mode exists.
Why Switch TV, tabletop, and handheld modes do not create multiplayer
The Switch edition supports TV, tabletop, and handheld configurations. These describe where or how the console displays the game:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- TV mode: the Switch is docked and the game appears on a television.
- Tabletop mode: the console stands on its kickstand with detachable controllers available.
- Handheld mode: the console and its screen are used as one portable unit.
None of those labels is a player-count setting. Nintendo still lists one player regardless of the selected configuration. Tabletop mode can make it easier for another person to watch, but it does not assign that person a character or a second control scheme. In handheld mode, a second controller also has no documented gameplay role.
How to play when two people want to enjoy it
Although the game has no co-op mode, a family or pair of friends can still decide how to share a single-player session. These are arrangements between players, not features provided by the game.
Take turns by level or checkpoint
- Start the game with one controller connected and select the single-player adventure.
- Agree on a handoff point, such as the end of a level, a completed puzzle, or a mini-quest.
- Pass the controller at that point and continue from the current save or checkpoint.
- Keep the same player in control during a difficult puzzle if the group prefers uninterrupted problem-solving, then switch afterward.
This works best when the players agree in advance whether they are alternating after every challenge or after longer sections. The game remains one-player from its software’s perspective.
Use a second person as a navigator
A second person can help read objectives, spot items on the screen, suggest routes, or solve a puzzle verbally while the controller holder explores. That can make the adventure collaborative without pretending that a second character is playable.

Use spectator-friendly setups
TV or tabletop mode can be convenient when several people want to watch. Position the screen so everyone can see it, and use a handoff rule that avoids taking control away during an active challenge. This is a practical way to share the story while preserving the game’s one-player design.
What kind of game is it?
Bluey’s Quest for the Gold Pen is a story-driven adventure starring Bluey. The premise comes from Bluey creator Joe Brumm: Bluey’s drawings come to life, turning ordinary ideas into an imaginative journey. The official descriptions present it as an adventure and family-friendly platformer rather than a multiplayer party game.
The announcement describes nine adventure-filled levels, varied environments, playful puzzles, and mini-quests. Those details explain why the game may appeal to families even though only one person controls the character. One player explores and solves challenges while others can watch, discuss choices, or take turns.
Joe Brumm described the project as a way to turn small moments into big adventures and said he was excited for families to experience Bluey’s world through the game’s imaginative premise. That family audience does not change the technical player count: the product is family-friendly, but it is not a shared-control co-op title.

The publisher’s release date for the console and PC versions is May 28, 2026. PM Studios lists Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Epic Games, and Steam among the platforms associated with the title.
The mobile rollout came earlier. The official launch announcement gave December 11, 2025 for iOS and January 10, 2026 for Google Play. Those mobile dates describe the initial rollout, while the May 28, 2026 date applies to the later console and PC release described by the publisher.
Platform availability does not imply cross-platform multiplayer. The official listings identify the game as single-player on each of the platforms named above. They do not advertise cross-play, shared progression between players, or a way for a mobile player to join a console session.

How the mobile version was described
The launch announcement described a free mobile experience with an optional one-off payment to unlock all levels. That is the announced mobile model, not a guarantee that the same price, offer, or terms apply in every country or at every later date. Check the relevant iOS or Google Play listing for current regional details.
Recommended Free Tools
The mobile payment model also does not add multiplayer. Unlocking more levels gives access to more single-player content; it does not unlock a second-player slot or a co-op mode.
Should you buy an extra controller?
Not for the purpose of adding a player. The official Switch listing allows one player on one system, and the publisher’s page calls the game single-player. An extra controller may be useful for another game, but it is not a supported solution for multiplayer in Bluey’s Quest for the Gold Pen.
If your main requirement is a game in which two people control characters simultaneously, treat this title as a poor fit for that specific purpose. If your goal is to share a Bluey-themed adventure with a child, sibling, or friend, the single-player design can still work through turn-taking or shared puzzle-solving.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common multiplayer assumptions, checked
“The Switch has two Joy-Cons, so both people can play.”
Hardware capability does not determine a game’s player count. A Switch can pair multiple controllers, but each game decides how many it accepts. Nintendo lists this title as one player on one system.
“Tabletop mode means two people can sit around the console.”
Tabletop mode describes the screen position and console setup. It does not state that two people can control Bluey. Nintendo Australia still lists one local player in that configuration.
“A second account will create another character.”
There is no official listing for a second character, guest slot, split-screen view, or account-based co-op. Creating another profile cannot add a feature the game does not expose.

“The mobile version might be multiplayer even if the console version is not.”
The announcement describes the mobile release as the same Bluey adventure with its level-unlocking model, not as a multiplayer product. The official platform descriptions reviewed do not advertise mobile co-op.
“An update may have added co-op.”
A future update could theoretically change any game, but no such update is established by the official listings summarized here. Check the current store page and patch notes if the publisher later announces a new mode; do not infer co-op from a controller-pairing screen alone.

A practical decision guide
- Choose it for solo play: you want a Bluey story, exploration, platforming, puzzles, and mini-quests controlled by one player.
- Choose it for shared family time: you are comfortable with watching, discussing puzzles, and taking turns rather than simultaneous control.
- Look elsewhere for co-op: two players must control characters at the same time, either locally or online.
Before buying, read the store page for the exact platform and region. Confirm the player field says one player, and do not treat TV, tabletop, or handheld support as evidence of multiplayer. This quick check prevents buying a single-player adventure when your household specifically wants cooperative play.
What to expect when you start
On a supported platform, launch the game with one controller or the platform’s standard input device. You should expect a solo adventure built around Bluey’s imaginative drawings, exploration, platforming, puzzles, and mini-quests. If another person joins you, decide whether they will watch, advise, or take the controller at an agreed handoff point.
There is no second-player lobby to find, no split-screen option to activate, and no co-op setting hidden behind the opening menu according to the official product information. If you cannot find a multiplayer toggle, that is consistent with the game’s advertised design rather than evidence that your console is malfunctioning.
Bottom line for local co-op shoppers
Bluey’s Quest for the Gold Pen is a single-player Bluey adventure, not a local co-op game. Nintendo’s one-player Switch specification, Nintendo Australia’s one-local-player listing, PM Studios’ “Single Player” classification, and the Steam and Xbox descriptions all point to the same conclusion. You can share the experience by taking turns or solving puzzles together, but a second controller will not create multiplayer.
