Does Blocking Images in Gmail Stop All Email Tracking?

Gmail’s image setting can reduce tracking from remote images, but it does not remove link identifiers, stop tracking redirects, or guarantee that opens go undetected.

No. Blocking automatic external images in Gmail can reduce tracking triggered by image loads, including conventional tracking pixels. It does not remove identifiers embedded in links, prevent tracking redirects, or guarantee that a sender cannot infer an open. Image blocking is useful, but it does not make email anonymous.

What Gmail’s image setting changes

Gmail can be set to ask before displaying external images instead of loading them automatically. That reduces automatic requests for remote images, which is how many email tracking pixels register that an image resource was fetched.

Google says Gmail scans images for suspicious content and proxies them to limit senders’ access to information about a recipient’s computer or location. Google also says this handling prevents images from setting or reading browser cookies and checks images for known harmful software. Those protections are specific; they do not mean Gmail blocks every tracking method.

Google’s Gmail Help page, “Turn images on or off in Gmail,” cautions: “Sometimes, senders may know whether you’ve opened an email that has an image.” “Sometimes” is not “always,” and an image request is not proof that a person consciously read a message. Google’s help wording does not quantify how its image proxy affects sender-level open reports.

Why links can still track you

Image loading and link tracking are separate mechanisms. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) describes tracking pixels as small pieces of code, usually an image file, embedded in content such as email; a server can use a request to identify events such as an email view. The ICO also describes link decoration: extra information added to a URL, for example to identify which email campaign led to a visit. Blocking an image does not strip that information from a hyperlink.

When you click a link, the destination site—or a tracking redirect along the way—may receive information associated with the visit. A URL may contain campaign or recipient identifiers. The 2018 study “I never signed up for this! Privacy implications of email tracking,” by Steven Englehardt, Jeffrey Han, and Arvind Narayanan, found further privacy leaks after recipients clicked links, including cases involving identifiers in URLs and linkages at the destination.

In that study’s commercial mailing-list email corpus, about 30% of messages leaked a recipient’s email address to one or more third parties when viewed. That result describes the study’s corpus and methods, not a current estimate for all email or Gmail users. The study also reported that Gmail and Yandex were the only providers among those it examined that proxied images; that is a historical finding about the providers and versions studied, not a current comparison of email services.

How to reduce tracking exposure

  • Set Gmail to ask before displaying external images if you want to avoid automatic remote image loads.
  • Before clicking an unexpected link, inspect its destination. Be aware that a URL can include campaign or recipient identifiers, and a click may pass through a tracking redirect.
  • Do not treat image blocking as a guarantee that an email cannot register an open or that a link click cannot be associated with you.
