Yes—Black & White (2001) can run on Steam Deck, but it is not a one-click Steam installation. The dependable setup uses an original disc you own or a lawful personal ISO backup, patches the game to v1.1, v1.2 and unofficial v1.42, adds runblack.exe as a non-Steam game, and forces Proton Experimental. Because the documented build has no native controller support, you also need a Steam Input keyboard-and-mouse layout. A 30-FPS cap is recommended for the original engine.
What works—and what does not
Black & White is a 2001 Windows game. It is playable in Steam Deck Gaming Mode after a manual installation, but the process is closer to installing an old PC title in a compatibility prefix than downloading a verified Steam release. A Steam Deck installation report lists no current digital Steam availability for the original game; its tested route assumes physical media and a USB optical drive, or an equivalent ISO made from media you own.

What you need before starting
Game media and legal access
Use an original Black & White disc that you own, or a lawful personal ISO backup of that disc. Do not assume that an old retail key will unlock a modern digital copy: the Deck report used physical media or an equivalent ISO and lists digital availability as none. The guide does not establish a currently supported official Steam listing.
If you are reading a disc, connect an external USB CD/DVD drive while the Deck is in Desktop Mode. The Deck has no built-in optical drive, and the installation media must be readable before any Proton configuration can help. An ISO backup avoids repeatedly connecting the drive, but it should come from media you are legally allowed to copy.
Hardware and files
- Steam Deck with enough free storage for the game directory, patches and a working backup.
- Desktop Mode access for copying files and adding a non-Steam shortcut.
- External USB CD/DVD drive if you are using the original disc.
- A physical keyboard and mouse are optional, but useful for the initial install and for diagnosing input problems.
- The original installation files, official patches v1.1 and v1.2, and unofficial community patch v1.42.
The tested installation transferred a prepared game folder from a Windows computer to the Deck. That approach can be easier than running a 2001 installer under a new prefix, provided the copied folder is complete and the patches are applied to that same folder.

1. Enter Desktop Mode and prepare a working folder
- Open the Steam Deck power menu and choose Switch to Desktop.
- Create a clearly named folder in your home directory, such as
BlackWhite. Keep a backup copy outside the folder you will patch. - Connect the USB optical drive if you are using a disc, or mount your lawful ISO.
Keeping an untouched copy gives you a recovery path if a patch is applied to the wrong directory. The executable that must ultimately be launched is runblack.exe, so make sure it is visible in the final game folder rather than buried in an installer or archive.
2. Install or copy the base game
You can install the files on a Windows computer and transfer the resulting installation directory to the Deck, which is the route described in the Deck report. Copy the entire directory, including data files and any disc-provided audio content. If you prefer to run the installer directly on Linux, use a dedicated Wine prefix through Bottles or Lutris instead of mixing it with unrelated Windows software.

After copying, open the folder in the file manager and confirm that runblack.exe exists. Do not add the shortcut to Steam yet; patch the files first so Steam points to the finished executable.
3. Apply the patches in the required order
- Install official Patch v1.1 into the Black & White directory.
- Install official Patch v1.2 into that same directory.
- Install unofficial community Patch v1.42 last.
The Black & White Community setup documentation states that the unofficial patch is required for launch and specifies this exact three-patch sequence. It also warns not to install Patch v1.3; that package is not a gameplay patch in the community guide’s instructions. If an installer asks for a location, browse to the folder containing runblack.exe rather than accepting a generic default.

4. Restore the music files when necessary
Some installations contain the game but lack its soundtrack because the audio was read from the CD during play. If music is missing, copy the disc’s Audio folder into the patched Black & White installation directory. Preserve the folder name and its contents; do not rename individual files to make them fit a different layout.
5. Choose a Deck-friendly display configuration
Run the game’s Setup utility after patching. Select the resolution you want to use on the Deck and enable the highest detail level that behaves reliably. Applying this step after the patches matters because the patched executable and its configuration are the files you will launch from Steam. If the game later opens at an unusable resolution, return to Desktop Mode and run Setup again rather than editing random configuration files.

6. Add the patched executable to Steam
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Choose Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
- Browse to the patched installation directory and select
runblack.exe. - Confirm the entry, then open its Steam Properties.
- On Compatibility, check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select Proton Experimental.
Forcing the tool is important. Leaving the choice on an automatic default can produce a different result after a Steam client or Proton update, while the documented working setup explicitly uses Proton Experimental.

7. Return to Gaming Mode and test the first launch
Switch back to Gaming Mode, open the new library entry and launch it. The first test should be deliberately simple: confirm that the main menu appears, that a new game can load, and that the pointer and camera respond before changing graphics or control bindings. If it fails immediately, stop and check the patch order and executable path before trying random Proton versions.
Controls: making a mouse-and-keyboard game usable
Black & White was designed around a Windows mouse and keyboard. In the documented Deck setup it has no native controller support, so the gamepad must send keyboard and mouse events through Steam Input.
Use the correct Steam Input template
- In Gaming Mode, highlight the non-Steam Black & White entry.
- Open the controller icon or Controller Settings.
- Choose the Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse template.
- Save the layout, then launch the game and test movement, camera control and the primary gesture.
The template supplies a usable baseline, not a perfect recreation of every desktop shortcut. Use the trackpad for pointer movement, a stick for camera or cursor movement, and assign rear buttons to actions you use repeatedly. Keep one button available for an escape or menu function so you can recover if the game captures the pointer.
Tune the layout in small steps
- Start with the template unchanged and verify that WASD movement reaches the game.
- Adjust trackpad sensitivity before changing acceleration; excessive sensitivity makes the god-hand cursor difficult to place.
- Assign a shoulder or rear button to a frequently used mouse click if reaching the trackpad interrupts play.
- Keep an on-screen keyboard binding available for text fields and launcher dialogs.
- Test the layout in a saved game, not only at the title screen, because camera and gesture input are used differently during play.
A physical USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse remain the most faithful option. They are especially useful while installing patches, changing Setup options or confirming whether a problem is caused by Proton or by the Steam Input layer.

Performance, frame rate and power expectations
Why 30 FPS is the right target
The original engine was not built for higher frame rates. Set the Steam Deck frame-rate limit to 30 FPS before judging smoothness. A higher unlocked value can introduce timing or animation behavior that the 2001 code was never designed to handle, even when the Deck has ample rendering headroom.
What the available test observed
One Steam Deck report described vanilla performance as solid, averaging roughly 6 watts while using a 4 W TDP setting. That was a limited test in the game’s first Land, not a guaranteed result for every map, save, display mode or mod. Treat it as an indication that the title can run efficiently, not as a battery-life promise.
Start with the Deck’s normal performance controls and the 30-FPS cap. Only lower TDP or alter other limits after you have confirmed that your own save remains stable. Large scenes, fan modifications and different display resolutions can change the load.

A direct non-Steam shortcut is the simplest route, but older Windows games sometimes need a managed Wine prefix and graphics overrides. The furudbat Linux guide recommends Bottles or Lutris when Proton alone does not provide the required environment.

- Install Bottles or Lutris in Desktop Mode and create a dedicated gaming prefix for Black & White.
- Select a Wine-GE-Proton runner; the guide lists
wine-ge-proton8-26. - Set the prefix’s Windows version to Windows XP.
- Install the base game into that prefix, then apply v1.1, v1.2 and unofficial v1.42 in order.
- Configure the library overrides
d3dim,ddrawandd3dim700as native, then builtin. - Set the launch target to

This route keeps the game’s files, runner and overrides together. The Linux guide specifically cautions that launching the title directly as a non-Steam game with Proton can require extra Wine configuration and dependencies; a managed prefix exposes those settings instead of hiding them behind Steam’s shortcut.

Adding the managed launch to Gaming Mode
Once the game works in Bottles or Lutris, add that manager’s launch entry to Steam if you want a Gaming Mode tile. If you instead add the raw executable, Steam may bypass the prefix and its overrides, recreating the original failure. The executable, working directory and Wine environment must remain the ones that succeeded in the manager.

Change one variable at a time. Replacing Proton, changing the resolution and rebuilding the controller layout simultaneously makes it impossible to identify which change fixed or caused the problem.

Choose the direct route first because it is easier to launch from Gaming Mode. Move to a managed prefix when the shortcut fails, when the game needs older Windows behavior, or when you want repeatable settings you can inspect and back up.
Mods and long-term maintenance
After the vanilla patched game works, you can investigate community additions such as drawing-distance changes or HD assets. Treat each as a separate compatibility variable: back up the working directory, install one modification at a time, and keep the unmodified patched copy available. A mod can change memory use, rendering behavior or the files that Proton must read, so a setup that worked before the mod is your control version.
Keep the patch order intact when restoring or rebuilding. If you move the game to a new microSD card or reinstall Steam, confirm that the non-Steam shortcut still points to the same patched directory and that any Bottles/Lutris prefix is still selected. Do not overwrite a known-good folder with an untested mod package.
