Does Berkshire Hathaway’s Filing Signal an Opportunity in U.S. Mortgage Stocks?

No—not on the evidence in Berkshire Hathaway’s latest located filing. Its Form 13F for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, reports stakes in homebuilders Lennar and D.R. Horton, but does not list Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. The filing supports a discussion of Berkshire’s disclosed housing-related holdings; it does not establish that Berkshire bought or endorsed mortgage-company stocks.

What Berkshire’s latest 13F reports

Berkshire Hathaway’s Form 13F covers holdings as of June 30, 2026, and was filed with the SEC on August 14, 2026. Its cover page reports 89 information-table entries with a total reported value of $299,253,556,246. Those figures describe the holdings covered by the filing—not Berkshire’s entire balance sheet or every investment it owns. SEC filing record and cover page

The information table includes Lennar Corporation and D.R. Horton, which are homebuilders, as well as Ally Financial. It does not list Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. SEC holdings table

The previous filing covered holdings as of March 31, 2026, and was filed May 15, 2026. That cadence matters: a 13F is a periodic, backward-looking disclosure, not a live portfolio feed. The June 30 snapshot cannot establish Berkshire’s positions after that date or explain why it held any reported security. SEC Q1 filing record

Why homebuilder holdings are not a mortgage-stock thesis

Homebuilders and mortgage enterprises are connected to housing, but they do different things. Lennar and D.R. Horton build and sell homes. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are mortgage-finance enterprises, whose business and prospects are shaped by mortgage-market conditions, regulation, and their conservatorship status. A reported holding in a homebuilder therefore does not demonstrate a view on either mortgage enterprise, much less an endorsement of its stock.

The distinction is important for investors: a housing-sector connection alone does not make two companies interchangeable. A claim about Berkshire’s interest in mortgage stocks would need evidence of a reported position in those stocks; the cited Q2 2026 holdings table does not provide it.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac face unresolved policy questions

Freddie Mac’s Q1 2026 Form 10-Q discusses possible transactions involving itself and Fannie Mae, including a public offering of equity securities and a potential exit from conservatorship. Freddie Mac cautions: “We cannot predict whether or when any of these transactions could take place or on what terms.” The report also identifies government actions, conservatorship, interest rates, spreads, house prices, mortgage-market conditions, and other factors as material risks. That uncertainty is relevant to any discussion of the enterprises’ equity, but it is not evidence of an impending transaction or a forecast of how shares might perform. The filing’s possible scenarios should not be mistaken for settled policy or a known timetable.

What Berkshire’s Freddie Mac history does—and does not—show

Berkshire’s historical connection to Freddie Mac is real but dated. An FHFA special examination report says Berkshire Hathaway was among Freddie Mac’s largest shareholders at the time of the report, in 2003. It also recounts that a query from Warren Buffett prompted a review of underwriting practices for housing-related asset-backed securities; Freddie Mac subsequently curtailed investments in manufactured-housing securities. This history provides context, not proof of a current position. It cannot override the more recent Q2 2026 holdings table, which does not list Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac.

How to read the headline against the filings

  • What the current filing supports: Berkshire’s reported portfolio includes homebuilder holdings in Lennar and D.R. Horton.
  • What it does not support: a claim that Berkshire’s latest disclosed holdings show a purchase of, or endorsement for, Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac stock.
  • What remains uncertain: whether the potential equity offerings or conservatorship changes described by Freddie Mac will occur, when they might happen, and on what terms.
  • What the dates mean: the Q2 report reflects holdings as of June 30, 2026, though it was filed August 14, 2026; it does not reveal later transactions.

For a reader assessing a mortgage-stock claim, the useful distinction is between a documented holding, a historical association, and a possible future policy change. The Q2 filing establishes the first only for the positions it actually lists; it does not supply Berkshire’s investment rationale or a recommendation on any mortgage stock.
