Yes. Apple Music on Apple TV 4K supports both Lossless audio and Dolby Atmos, but they are separate features with different requirements. Lossless is selected in the Music app’s Audio Quality settings and requires an Apple TV 4K running current tvOS connected by HDMI to an AV receiver. Dolby Atmos is controlled separately and requires Atmos-capable content plus a compatible television, soundbar, AV receiver, or supported HomePod arrangement.
Apple’s current documentation limits Hi-Res Lossless to Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later). Standard Lossless and Atmos still depend on the particular song, network conditions, audio chain and speaker capability. The instructions below apply to Apple TV 4K; they do not establish equivalent support for non-4K Apple TV models.

Lossless and Dolby Atmos are different controls
These options change different aspects of playback. Lossless preserves the source recording in Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), while Dolby Atmos is an immersive, object-based mix that places sounds around the listener. A track can be available in one format, both formats or neither, so turning on one option does not guarantee the other.
| Feature | What it changes | Apple TV control | Hardware requirement | Documented ceiling or limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lossless | Higher-fidelity, non-lossy ALAC playback | Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality > Lossless | Apple TV 4K on current tvOS, connected by HDMI to an AV receiver | ALAC up to 24-bit/48 kHz |
| Hi-Res Lossless | Higher-resolution ALAC playback | The same Audio Quality area, where supported | Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later), with a compatible audio chain | ALAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz |
| Dolby Atmos | Immersive surround mix when the song has an Atmos version | Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos > Automatic | One or two HomePod speakers, an Atmos-capable television, an Atmos soundbar with a compatible television, or an Atmos-enabled AV receiver | Playback follows the highest format supported by the connected system and the available song |
The format ceilings in the table are specifications in Apple’s Apple TV settings guide, not measurements of loudness, speaker quality or audible improvement in every room.

Which Apple TV 4K models and formats are covered?
Apple’s current lossless support article explicitly says that Hi-Res Lossless is available only on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later). That is a generation-specific qualification, not a statement that every older Apple TV 4K has the same Hi-Res capability. Use the model generation shown in Settings > General > About when checking compatibility.
Apple’s instructions require current tvOS for the Apple TV 4K lossless setup. The standard Lossless setting is documented as ALAC up to 24-bit/48 kHz; Hi-Res Lossless is documented as up to 24-bit/192 kHz and has the third-generation-or-newer restriction. Apple has also published older regional support excerpts that said Apple TV 4K did not support Hi-Res Lossless. The newer generation-qualified statement is the safer one to apply, rather than making a blanket claim about all Apple TV 4K units.
The available file format is also determined by the song and playback conditions. Apple notes that lossless support depends on whether that recording is offered in lossless, the network connection and the capability of the connected speakers or receiver. A compatible Apple TV therefore cannot turn a non-lossless source into a lossless one.

- Update tvOS. Install the current tvOS release on the Apple TV 4K. The lossless instructions assume the device is up to date.
- Build the HDMI path. Connect the Apple TV 4K to an AV receiver with HDMI. The receiver and the rest of the audio chain must be able to accept the format you intend to play. Apple’s instructions specify HDMI to the receiver; they do not require a premium or named cable.
- Open the Music settings. On the Apple TV home screen, open
Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality. - Select Lossless. Choose
Losslessin Audio Quality. If the interface and hardware expose Hi-Res Lossless, the third-generation-or-later Apple TV 4K requirement still applies. - Play an eligible recording. The recording must be offered in lossless and the network must sustain delivery. If either the source or the audio chain cannot provide the format, playback will use what is supported rather than creating a higher-resolution version.
For a receiver-based installation, put the receiver on the HDMI input used by Apple TV and select the receiver’s output connected to the speakers. The Apple documentation establishes the HDMI receiver requirement, but it does not prescribe a particular receiver, speaker brand or cable price.
How to enable Dolby Atmos
Atmos is enabled separately from Lossless. Apple lists four compatible home-audio arrangements:
- One or two HomePod speakers.
- A television that supports Dolby Atmos audio.
- An Atmos-compatible soundbar paired with a television that supports Atmos audio.
- An Atmos-enabled AV receiver.
HomePod mini does not support Dolby Atmos, so a HomePod mini-only arrangement is not an Atmos setup under Apple’s guidance.

- Connect a supported system. Use one of the television, soundbar, AV receiver or HomePod arrangements listed above. Every link in the chain matters: an Atmos receiver cannot pass Atmos to speakers or a display that cannot handle it.
- Open the Music controls. Go to
Settings > Apps > Music. - Set Dolby Atmos to Automatic. This tells Apple TV to play supported songs in Dolby Atmos when compatible speakers or receivers are connected. The same control also permits other supported Dolby audio formats.
- Play a song with an Atmos version. Atmos is content-dependent. A compatible system will not produce an Atmos mix for a track that Apple Music does not offer in that format.
Apple TV 4K automatically selects the highest quality that the connected entertainment system and the available content support. If automatic selection does not produce the expected result, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format to review the available audio-format controls.

Can Lossless and Dolby Atmos be used together?
Yes, the controls are independent, so you can leave Lossless selected under Audio Quality and Dolby Atmos set to Automatic. The result still depends on the specific release. Apple Music may have a lossless stereo version, an Atmos version, both or neither. The Apple TV chooses among the formats that the song and the connected system actually support.
Think of the settings as permissions rather than conversion switches. Lossless does not make a stereo recording immersive, and Atmos does not make every Atmos stream lossless. The receiver, television, soundbar or HomePod system must advertise the required capability, and the network must deliver the selected source reliably.
Troubleshooting Lossless playback
The Lossless option is missing
- Confirm that the device is an Apple TV 4K and install the current tvOS update.
- Return to
Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality; Lossless is not controlled from the Video and Audio menu. - Check that the Apple TV is connected by HDMI to an AV receiver as specified in Apple’s lossless instructions.
Hi-Res Lossless is unavailable
Check the Apple TV 4K generation in Settings > General > About. Apple’s current support article limits Hi-Res Lossless to the third generation and later. Do not use an older regional statement that treats every Apple TV 4K generation identically; apply the current generation qualifier.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A song does not play in lossless quality
Verify that the recording is offered in lossless, then check the network connection and the capabilities of the receiver and speakers. Apple identifies all three as factors. A system may therefore fall back when the recording is unavailable in lossless or the downstream hardware cannot accept it.

The receiver is connected but the result is unexpected
Check the HDMI route from Apple TV to the receiver and from the receiver to the display or speakers. Confirm that the receiver is on the correct input and that the speaker output is active. The documentation requires an HDMI receiver connection for the Apple TV 4K lossless setup; it does not promise a particular result from a television-only connection.

No Atmos playback with Automatic selected
- Make sure the song has an Atmos version; not every Apple Music recording does.
- Confirm that the television, soundbar and receiver combination is Atmos-capable, or use the supported HomePod arrangement.
- Check that the Apple TV 4K is running current tvOS and that
Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmosremains set toAutomatic. - Review
Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Formatif the automatic route cannot use the expected format.
A HomePod setup is not producing Atmos
Apple supports one or two HomePod speakers for Atmos, but HomePod mini does not support Dolby Atmos. Replacing or supplementing a mini-only arrangement with hardware that Apple lists as Atmos-compatible is necessary; changing the Music setting alone cannot add Atmos support.
The television or soundbar reports a different format
Apple TV chooses the highest quality supported by the entire connected system and the content. Inspect every connection and the television’s audio capability, then verify the soundbar or receiver input. If any component cannot accept Atmos, automatic selection may use another supported format.
Planning the physical setup
For Lossless, the most explicit hardware requirement is a suitable HDMI connection from Apple TV 4K to an AV receiver. Apple does not require a premium cable or identify a preferred manufacturer, so choose a cable appropriate for the distance and connectors in your installation rather than paying for an unsupported performance claim.

For Atmos, decide which architecture fits the room before changing settings: television audio, a soundbar connected to an Atmos-capable television, an Atmos receiver with speakers, or one or two HomePod speakers. Compatibility is system-wide. A capable Apple TV and an Atmos-capable receiver are not enough if the television, soundbar, speaker arrangement or HDMI path cannot carry the format.
What the Apple TV settings actually guarantee
The settings expose format support; they do not guarantee that every Apple Music title is available in every format. Lossless has documented ALAC ceilings, while Atmos is selected automatically according to the content and the connected system. Network conditions and speaker capability can affect lossless delivery, and Atmos requires both an eligible mix and a compatible audio chain.
Accordingly, the direct answer is conditional but clear: Apple Music on Apple TV 4K supports Lossless and Dolby Atmos. Use the Audio Quality menu for Lossless, the Dolby Atmos Automatic control for Atmos, and verify the Apple TV 4K generation, HDMI receiver path, content availability and speaker or television compatibility before expecting either format.
