Partly. Apple Intelligence can process some requests on your device without Wi-Fi or mobile data, but requests routed to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute (PCC) need a network connection. Apple may choose the route based on the request, so a feature’s name alone does not tell you whether every use will work offline. You also need an internet connection to download Apple Intelligence models during setup.
How Apple Intelligence handles requests
Apple Intelligence is a hybrid system. It assesses whether a request can be handled by the on-device model; requests that need more computational capacity may be sent to Private Cloud Compute. That means offline support depends on the processing route for a particular request, as well as whether the required model is already on your device.
Apple’s developer documentation says the on-device model is an always-available option that does not require a network connection. By contrast, its PCC model does not work offline. Apple says an app can retry an appropriate request with the on-device model if a PCC request fails because the network is unavailable, but that does not mean every cloud request can be completed locally. Apple Developer Documentation: Adding server-side intelligence with Private Cloud Compute.
Which Apple Intelligence features need internet?
| Request or feature | Offline behavior |
|---|---|
| Requests processed by the on-device model | Can work without a network connection if the model is downloaded and the feature can handle the request locally. |
| Requests processed by Private Cloud Compute | Need a network connection. Apple does not publish a complete feature-by-feature routing list. |
| On-device dictation | Apple says all processing for on-device dictation happens offline. This claim applies specifically to on-device dictation. |
| Siri, search, and requests involving current web information | Some requests need network access. Apple lists network hosts for Siri requests, dictation, search, and PCC, and says Siri AI can search the web for current information. Not every Siri request necessarily needs internet. |
| Image Playground, Intelligent Photo Editing Tools, Siri AI, and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts | Apple names these as examples of features subject to daily limits for server-side models. This indicates that some requests use server-side models, but does not establish that every operation always needs PCC. |
| Initial Apple Intelligence model download | Requires internet access. Apple says models begin downloading after the software update and recommends Wi-Fi and power for the quickest download. |
The server-side feature examples and daily limits are described on Apple Support’s Apple Intelligence setup and availability page. Apple says limits may vary with feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies, and other factors.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
For developers, Apple lists a 4K context size for the on-device model and 32K for the PCC model. These are model specifications, not a guarantee that a particular consumer feature will use one route every time.
What you can expect when you are offline
- If the required model is already downloaded and a request can be handled locally, Apple Intelligence can work without Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- If a request needs PCC, or depends on web access for current information, it will need a network connection. A local fallback is possible only where the request and feature support it.
- Some services that appear alongside Apple Intelligence may still need connectivity. Apple’s network guidance lists destinations used for Siri and dictation requests, search, and PCC; those network destinations do not mean every operation in each category always needs internet. See Apple Support: Use Apple products on enterprise networks.
Set up before you rely on offline use
- Check that your device, operating system, language, and region support Apple Intelligence. Apple’s requirements can change; use its current compatibility and availability page for your exact situation.
- Install the relevant software update while you have internet access.
- Allow the Apple Intelligence models to download. Apple recommends connecting to Wi-Fi and power to speed up the download.
- Before going offline, try the specific functions you expect to use. Some requests may need PCC or current web information even when other Apple Intelligence features work locally.
Device, language, and regional availability
Apple’s current support guidance includes iPhone 15 Pro models and iPhone 16 models or later, along with compatible iPad and Mac classes. Eligibility and feature availability vary by device, platform, software, language, and region. Apple also says Apple Intelligence features are not currently available in mainland China under the conditions specified on its support page. Check that live page before making an upgrade decision; a compatible device alone does not establish that every feature is available in your location or language.

Privacy is separate from connectivity
Offline processing and cloud processing are different routes. Apple describes on-device dictation as completely offline. For requests that use PCC, consult Apple’s explanation of its server-side processing rather than assuming they are processed on your device. Apple’s privacy page also explains Siri’s use of web search for current information: Apple Privacy Features.
