Cathode-ray-tube (CRT) televisions and computer monitors are no longer a mainstream consumer product category. New consumer displays are overwhelmingly LCD, LED, OLED, or related flat-panel designs. However, some specialist manufacturers still describe CRT display production and maintenance capabilities for legacy, industrial, medical, and other applications. That does not establish that new consumer CRT televisions are being mass-produced today.
What “still made” means for CRTs
The answer changes depending on whether “CRT” means a new consumer TV, a replacement display for specialized equipment, or repair of an existing tube.
| Market segment | What the available evidence supports | Practical conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Mainstream consumer TVs and monitors | The U.S. Food and Drug Administration describes modern computers and televisions as using LCD, LED, plasma, or other non-CRT technologies. Its overview is not a census of every niche manufacturer worldwide. | CRT is no longer a mainstream consumer display technology. |
| Specialized CRT displays | Thomas Electronics says it continues to focus on CRT displays and describes phosphor refresh, cleanroom manufacturing, electron-gun assembly, and facilities in the United States and France. | Some specialist CRT capability remains, according to the company; this is not proof of new consumer TV production. |
| Legacy aviation equipment | A 2019 aviation-industry report described aircraft still using CRTs, vendor-support programs, and migration to LCD systems. It also reported that Toshiba’s last CRT facility was preparing to close in 2020. | Legacy systems can remain in service after new production winds down. The factory-closure statement is a forecast from that 2019 report, not a current global status confirmation. |
| Repair, reuse, and disposal | The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends repair and reuse where practical, with recycling when those options are not practical. | Existing CRTs are generally a legacy-equipment and end-of-life-management issue rather than a new-product market. |
For general background on display technology and U.S. requirements, see the FDA’s television and video-display guidance.
Are new CRT televisions still manufactured?
There is no evidence here of a current, mainstream consumer production line for new CRT televisions. The FDA’s description of modern consumer displays reflects the market’s shift to flat panels, while Thomas Electronics’ own statements concern CRT display capabilities without claiming that it sells newly manufactured consumer television sets.

That distinction matters. A company can retain the tooling, materials, cleanroom processes, and engineering knowledge to build or refurbish CRT displays for a specialized customer without offering a new CRT TV through ordinary retail channels. Therefore, a reader asking “Can I buy a new CRT TV?” should expect the answer to be effectively no in mainstream retail, even though specialist CRT work has not disappeared.
What specialist CRT production and maintenance involves
Thomas Electronics says the CRT remains part of its business and describes several activities associated with keeping the technology viable:
- Phosphor refresh and related coating work.
- Cleanroom manufacturing processes.
- Electron-gun assembly.
- CRT display manufacturing and maintenance at facilities in the United States and France.
The company’s FAQ says, “The biggest maintenance upkeep needed throughout the life of your CRT is refreshing the phosphor coating.” It explains that phosphor characteristics affect brightness, color, and persistence. These are company statements about its own capabilities, not an independent count of the global CRT market. Read the details in Thomas Electronics’ CRT FAQ.

Why some legacy systems still use CRTs
When a system is designed around a CRT, replacing the display can require more than swapping one panel for another. Mechanical dimensions, signal formats, timing, optical characteristics, software interfaces, certification, and maintenance procedures may all be tied to the original hardware.

Aviation is a clear example
The 2019 report hosted by Aviation Today documents this transition in aviation. Dave Jensen, vice president of aircraft maintenance at ACI Jet, said, “A lot of the CRT displays are sun setting and not being supported by vendors anymore.” Norbert Sabogal of Lufthansa Technik said, “We continue to provide support for old CRTs, but only for those operators that have ordered in advance such repair programs.”
The report also lists 18,000 hours as mean time between failures for CRT displays, attributing the figure to Alexander Krause, product sales manager for avionics and flight-deck solutions at Lufthansa Technik, and to information from the MRO’s manufacturer customers and business partners. This is a dated, attributed aviation-display figure—not a predicted service life for a household CRT television or computer monitor.

Why consumer CRT production faded
Flat panels made displays thinner, lighter, and easier to ship while enabling larger screen sizes and higher resolutions in compact enclosures. As LCD and later LED-backlit designs became standard, the economies of scale, supply chains, and retail infrastructure moved away from CRT.
The change was not primarily a response to ordinary CRT radiation danger. The FDA says CRT televisions and monitors must meet applicable federal performance standards and that technology changes introduced after those standards made the risk of x-ray exposure almost nonexistent. A properly intact product should be evaluated according to its condition and the applicable safety guidance, not treated as inherently dangerous simply because it uses a tube.

Checks before buying
- Confirm the exact inputs you need, such as composite, S-Video, component, VGA, or a particular professional connector.
- Ask for the model number and a powered-on photograph or demonstration.
- Check for a dim or uneven picture, color purity problems, geometry errors, convergence issues, excessive buzzing, or intermittent shutdown.
- Plan transportation: CRTs are deep, heavy, and vulnerable to impact. Use two-person lifting for larger sets and keep the tube upright during handling.
- Verify that a repair technician is willing to work on that model before paying a premium for it.
Marketplace inventory, condition, seller reliability, and shipping protection vary continuously, so no particular listing or price should be assumed to represent the market as a whole.

The EPA defines a CRT as the glass video-display component of a television or computer monitor. Lead is present in the funnel glass, and CRTs marked for disposal can fall under hazardous-waste requirements under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).
Federal rules provide specific exclusions and conditions for some used CRTs and recycled CRT glass, but state requirements can be stricter. Do not put a broken or unwanted tube in ordinary trash without checking the rules where you live.

- Determine whether the set can be safely repaired or reused.
- If repair or reuse is impractical, contact your local solid-waste authority or a qualified electronics recycler.
- Ask how the recycler handles CRT glass and whether it accepts the specific television or monitor.
- Follow local packaging, transport, appointment, and fee requirements.

Bottom line for buyers and owners
CRT has not vanished, but it has left the mainstream consumer market. New CRT televisions and computer monitors are not a normal retail product today. Specialist companies still describe the ability to manufacture, refresh, or support CRT displays, and legacy sectors such as aviation may keep them operating for years after vendors stop making new units. If you need one for personal use, look for a used set, verify its condition and inputs, and arrange repair or compliant recycling when it reaches the end of its useful life.
