Does an SSD or Hard Drive Change the Electricity Cost of a Looping YouTube PC?

Possibly, but there is not enough evidence to say an SSD will noticeably lower the electricity bill for a PC looping YouTube. A drive’s power use is only one part of the computer’s total consumption, and the sources available do not provide a controlled, whole-PC comparison of an otherwise identical machine using an SSD versus a hard drive. If you need the cost for your setup, measure the PC at the wall while it plays under your normal conditions.

What changes—and what does not

Microsoft’s Windows Server hardware guidance says that “SSD drives are more power efficient than rotational drives.” That supports a general direction, not a quantified saving for a consumer PC playing YouTube. The power used by a storage drive is not the same as the power drawn by the complete computer, display and network setup.

SanDisk Support lists generic theoretical internal SSD ranges: a 2.5-inch SATA SSD is listed at 0.30 to 2 W at idle, an M.2 SATA SSD at 0.40 to 2 W at idle, and an M.2 NVMe Gen 4.0 SSD at 1 to 3 W at idle. It says internal SSD read/write power can reach 6 to 10 W depending on form factor and operation. SanDisk describes these as generic expectations, not measurements for its products. They are not a comparison with an HDD, nor a measurement of a PC looping video.

During playback, the processor, graphics hardware, display, browser and network contribute to the system’s power use. Drive activity also matters: idle and read/write figures describe different conditions. A drive-level specification therefore cannot tell you the whole-PC bill difference.

Why playback conditions matter

YouTube says playback quality can depend on connection speed, player or screen size, the quality of the uploaded video and browser support. On a computer, viewers can select video quality manually. YouTube also notes that some movies, shows and live streams require more processing power, and its recommended sustained connection speeds rise with video resolution.

Those factors can make two playback sessions difficult to compare unless they are held steady. A comparison between two different computers is especially inconclusive if their processors, displays, settings or other hardware differ as well as their drives.

Estimate your own electricity cost

Measure whole-PC power during representative playback, rather than adding a drive specification to an assumed system total. A plug-in meter that measures the complete PC can help; the cited sources do not establish a particular meter model or its accuracy.

  1. Set up representative playback. Use the same computer, video, browser, resolution, display configuration and other settings you use for the loop. Select a quality manually if you want to keep resolution consistent.
  2. Measure average wall power. Record the PC’s average draw in watts during a representative period of playback. If comparing drives, keep the rest of the machine and playback conditions the same, and repeat the measurement.
  3. Convert watts and hours to energy. Calculate kilowatt-hours as average watts × hours ÷ 1,000.
  4. Apply your electricity rate. Multiply the resulting kWh by your actual local price per kWh. For a daily or yearly figure, use the number of hours you actually run the loop over that period.

The formula is: cost = (average watts × hours ÷ 1,000) × local price per kWh. It is a way to estimate your own use, not a universal tariff or a promised saving. If you run an SSD-versus-HDD comparison, treat the result as specific to that system and test period.

Should you buy a 2.5-inch SATA SSD to cut the bill?

Not on the evidence here alone. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is one storage category covered by SanDisk’s generic power ranges, but those figures neither quantify the difference from a hard drive nor establish the savings for a looping YouTube PC. Consider an SSD for other reasons that matter to you, such as storage performance or system responsiveness; do not assume it will pay for itself through lower playback electricity costs.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the reason you keep a PC running is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream going, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. The stream uses your uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
