Does an ARM VPS Cost Less Than an x86 VPS for Looping Videos to YouTube?

Not necessarily. An ARM VPS can cost less for a particular provider and workload, but the architecture label alone does not tell you which plan is cheaper—or whether it can sustain your stream. Compare plans in the same region, include storage and outbound-transfer terms, and test the exact loop and stream settings you intend to use.

What determines the real cost?

A VPS bill is only one part of running a continuous prerecorded-video stream. A useful comparison includes the plan price, included storage and data transfer, any overage charges, the work required to configure and maintain the stream, and whether the CPU can handle the job you give it.

  • Provider and region: Compare offers available in the same geography and billing context. Prices and transfer allowances can vary by region and change over time.
  • CPU workload: Record the vCPU count and test your actual playback or encoding process. Do not assume that a low price or an ARM label proves the processor can sustain your settings.
  • Storage and transfer: Check whether your video files fit the included storage and whether the provider’s outbound-transfer allowance covers continuous delivery to YouTube.
  • Administration: Include the time needed to set up the process, monitor it and restore service after a failure.

The lowest sticker price is not necessarily the lowest total cost if it comes with less transfer, requires a larger plan to handle encoding, or takes more time to manage.

What published prices and ARM claims can—and cannot—tell you

Amazon Lightsail’s published Linux bundles provide a price reference, but not a matched ARM-versus-x86 comparison. AWS’s current pricing documentation, retrieved October 3, 2026, lists these Linux public-IPv4 examples:

AWS notes that transfer allowance can vary by region. These examples do not identify an ARM/x86 pair and do not establish that either plan can sustain a particular encoding workload. Check the current Lightsail pricing details for your region before comparing plans.

AWS says comparable Graviton-based Amazon EC2 instances cost up to 20% less than comparable x86-based EC2 instances. That is an AWS claim about comparable EC2 instances—not a general price rule for all VPS providers or proof that an ARM VPS will be cheaper for your loop. See AWS’s Graviton information for the claim and its scope.

Does ARM encode video more cheaply?

It can in some tested combinations, but the result depends on the codec, bitrate and encoder preset. The 2021 IEEE study “Where to Encode: A Performance Analysis of x86 and Arm-based Amazon EC2 Instances” examined selected Graviton2 ARM and x86 EC2 families using FFmpeg with x264 and x265. The authors reported time and cost savings of up to 33.63% in selected experiments, particularly for x264; their recommendations varied by codec, bitrate and preset, and favored x86 in some cases.

That maximum is a result from specific experiments, not a forecast for a current VPS or an individual YouTube loop. Use the paper as evidence that architecture and encoding settings can matter, not as a universal ARM discount or a current benchmark for every provider.

First establish whether your loop re-encodes

A process that relays a compatible, already-encoded file without changing its video may place a different demand on the CPU than one that decodes and re-encodes video in real time. The cited benchmark does not quantify that difference for your setup. Check what your streaming software actually does, then test it on the target plan with the video and settings you intend to use.

Do not choose a VPS size based on a supposed universal CPU or RAM minimum: YouTube’s encoder guidance does not provide one for prerecorded loops. Performance depends on your software, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and whether you encode again.

Choose the YouTube stream profile before sizing the VPS

YouTube’s live encoder settings specify what the encoder sends to YouTube, not which CPU architecture or VPS size to buy. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary streaming; its guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a 2-second keyframe frequency (not over 4 seconds).

For examples from YouTube’s recommended bitrate table, 1080p at 30 fps is 10 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265; 720p at 30 fps is 4 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265. These are profile-specific figures, not universal settings. Use the table row for your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec, and verify that your VPS provider’s transfer policy supports the continuous outbound stream.

  1. Choose the resolution, frame rate and codec for your video and stream.
  2. Set the encoder to constant bitrate and use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for that profile.
  3. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and do not exceed 4 seconds.
  4. Use RTMPS where supported, then test the stream with representative audio and video movement and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on it.

How to compare and test two VPS plans

  1. Match the offers: Compare plans from the same provider and region where possible, with the same billing period and comparable included resources. Record vCPUs, storage, transfer allowance and applicable overage terms.
  2. Fix the stream profile: Decide on codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate first. Keep these constant when testing both plans.
  3. Check the process: Determine whether your software relays the encoded file or re-encodes it. Use the actual files, playlist and encoder configuration—not a different synthetic workload.
  4. Run a representative test: Test audio and video movement at the intended settings and monitor the stream for stability. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
  5. Calculate the total: Add the VPS charge, any required storage and likely transfer charges; account for setup and ongoing administration. The cheapest plan that sustains your stream cannot be determined without your provider, region and workload.

Remember YouTube’s monetization rules

Being able to loop a stream technically does not establish that its content is eligible for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies say monetized content should be original and authentic, and describe mass-produced or repetitive material as inauthentic. The policy applies to live streams. YouTube’s notice says it renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” on July 15, 2025, to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under the existing policy. Whether a particular channel qualifies depends on its content and compliance; a looping format alone does not settle that question.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not configure and maintain a VPS, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists as a continuous YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
  • Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality-based tiers.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo is for uploaded video streamed to YouTube, not camera-based live broadcasting. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
