Short answer: An 8,000Hz (8K) polling rate can reduce the mouse-report waiting interval from a maximum of 1 millisecond at 1,000Hz to 0.125 milliseconds. That 0.875ms difference applies only to one part of the input path, so it does not guarantee lower end-to-end game latency or better aim.
Whether 8K helps your setup depends on the game, operating system, USB connection, CPU headroom, display refresh rate and your own consistency. The 8K specification supports a technical latency benefit under suitable conditions, but it does not establish a universal, independently measured improvement in aiming performance.

What an 8K polling rate actually changes
Polling rate, also called report rate, is how often a mouse sends position and button data to the computer. A 1,000Hz setting sends up to 1,000 reports per second; an 8,000Hz setting sends up to 8,000.
| Setting | Nominal time between reports | Maximum wait for the next report | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000Hz (1K) | 1ms | Up to 1ms | The mouse-to-host report interval |
| 8,000Hz (8K) | 0.125ms | Up to 0.125ms | The mouse-to-host report interval |
Moving from 1K to 8K therefore reduces the worst-case wait for the next report by 0.875ms in this simple interval comparison. It does not mean that a click reaches the game, is processed, rendered and displayed 0.875ms faster in every situation. USB scheduling, operating-system processing, the game engine, frame time, display scan-out and network conditions remain in the path.

Polling rate is not DPI
DPI (dots per inch) controls how much cursor or camera movement results from a given physical movement. Polling rate controls how frequently those movement updates are transmitted. Increasing DPI does not increase report frequency, and increasing polling rate does not change your mouse sensitivity. Choose each setting for its own purpose.
Can 8K reduce input lag?
It can reduce the report-wait portion of latency. If a movement occurs just after a 1K report, the computer may wait nearly 1ms for the next update. At 8K, the equivalent worst-case wait is 0.125ms. The average wait under an idealized uniform timing model also becomes shorter, but the nominal interval figures alone do not establish a universal end-to-end latency result.
Total input latency is a chain rather than a single mouse specification:
- Your hand moves or presses a button.
- The mouse sensor and switch detect the event.
- The mouse firmware schedules a report.
- The USB connection and operating system deliver it to the host.
- The game samples and processes the input.
- The CPU and GPU produce a frame.
- The monitor scans that frame to your eyes.
An 8K setting changes step three’s reporting cadence. It cannot remove delay introduced by a long frame time, a CPU-bound game, a busy USB path, buffering or a low-refresh display. If another stage dominates, the small report-interval reduction may be difficult to notice.

A vendor measurement with a strict boundary
Razer reports an average latency of 0.090ms for its HyperPolling setup versus 0.549ms for what it describes as the best non-Razer 1,000Hz setup. Razer says this controlled test measured the time from electrical mouse-click actuation until the signal was reflected at the host computer.
Those numbers are not a measurement of total gameplay latency, frame presentation or aiming accuracy. They are a company-reported comparison under Razer’s stated test conditions, and the measurement ends at the host-computer signal. A different mouse, game, USB path or computer can produce a different result.
Does 8K improve aim?
No independent controlled aim-performance result is established for 8K. The defensible conclusion is conditional: a faster report cadence may make input updates more temporally granular, but that fact alone does not prove that players hit more shots or aim more accurately.

“During our testing and development process with a large pool of competitive players and mouse enthusiasts, many reported significantly smoother and more responsive input when using the HyperPolling Technology featured in the new Viper 8KHz esports gaming mouse.”
This is the manufacturer’s account of user impressions, not an independently published, controlled study. Perceived smoothness can also depend on frame pacing, monitor refresh rate, sensor behavior, firmware, sensitivity and expectation. Treat the quote as evidence that some testers preferred the feel, not as proof of a measurable aim advantage for all players.
Why a higher rate can hurt performance
Eight thousand reports per second create more USB traffic and more input events for the operating system and game to process. Logitech warns that a higher report rate can affect system performance, including causing FPS drops in some games. Razer likewise notes that a CPU-limited computer may not have enough resources to process 8,000 reports each second.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSymptoms that 8K is too demanding
- Lower average FPS after enabling 8K on the same sensitivity and graphics settings.
- Irregular frame times or stutter while moving the mouse rapidly.
- Higher CPU utilization in the game or input-related process.
- A game that becomes less responsive despite the higher nominal polling rate.
- A browser polling test that shows an unstable or lower rate, especially on an older system.
If any of these occur, compare 8K with 4K, 2K or 1K on the same machine and in the same game. A stable lower rate is preferable to a nominal maximum that causes frame-time spikes. The comparison should use repeatable scenes and identical graphics, sensitivity and frame-rate limits.

Connection and setup details
Wired mice
For the wired Razer Viper 8KHz, the manual recommends connecting directly to a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port to optimize polling. This is a product-specific manufacturer recommendation, not a guarantee that every 8K mouse will behave identically on every port or hub.
- Install the mouse manufacturer’s current configuration software and firmware, if offered for your model.
- Set the desired report rate, beginning with 1K so you have a baseline.
- Connect the mouse directly to a motherboard USB port rather than routing it through an unpowered hub.
- Test 8K in the game you actually play, watching frame-time consistency as well as average FPS.
- Keep the setting only if the game remains stable and the input feel is preferable to the lower-rate baseline.
Wireless mice and receivers
Wireless 8K systems generally send data through a dedicated receiver. For Razer’s wireless HyperPolling setup, the manufacturer advises keeping the receiver away from active USB 3 hubs because of possible 2.4GHz interference. Follow the specific receiver placement and charging guidance for your model; no current official battery-runtime figures are stated for current products.
When comparing wired and wireless options, account for receiver placement, selectable report rates, operating-system and game support, measured system performance, and battery trade-offs. A wireless mouse that drops to a lower rate under battery-saving conditions should be evaluated at the setting you will actually use.

Why an online polling checker may show less than 8K
A browser-based polling checker observes reports in its own environment. It is not definitive proof of the mouse’s internal maximum or of the latency delivered to a particular game. Logitech notes that a high-capability mouse may report below its maximum depending on computer capability and directs device-specific questions to support.

Browser scheduling, background load, USB handling, the test duration and how the page calculates an average can all affect the displayed value. Use such a page as a rough diagnostic, not as a laboratory measurement. For a meaningful comparison, record the same test conditions at 1K and 8K, close unnecessary applications, and look for stability rather than one peak reading.
When 8K is worth trying
| Your situation | Practical choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Modern CPU, high-refresh monitor, stable frame times and a game known to handle high report rates | Try 8K, then compare directly with 1K or 2K | You may benefit from the shorter report interval if no performance penalty appears. |
| CPU-limited system or a game that already stutters | Use the highest rate that preserves frame-time stability | Additional input events can compete for CPU time and worsen playability. |
| Lower-refresh display or large GPU/CPU frame times | Do not expect a visible aim transformation from 8K | Other parts of the input-to-photon chain dominate the result. |
| Wireless setup with receiver interference | Reposition the receiver and verify stability before judging 8K | Connection quality can obscure any benefit from a faster report cadence. |
| Competitive player choosing hardware | Prioritize consistent tracking, comfortable shape, reliable firmware and stable FPS; treat 8K as an optional feature | No independent evidence here proves a universal aim improvement. |
How to test whether your own setup benefits
A controlled personal comparison is more useful than assuming that the largest number is best. Use a repeatable routine:
- Choose one game, one map or training scene and one sensitivity. Do not change graphics settings during the comparison.
- Record a baseline at 1,000Hz. Note average FPS, frame-time behavior, CPU utilization and any visible stutter.
- Switch to 8,000Hz and repeat the same movement drills for the same amount of time.
- Check whether rapid swipes produce smoother movement or instead coincide with frame-time spikes.
- Repeat on a lower setting if 8K causes instability. The useful result is the highest stable rate, not the highest selectable number.
- Judge consistency over several sessions rather than one short impression. If you track accuracy, keep the drill, target size and duration identical.
This method cannot prove a general competitive advantage, but it can reveal whether your computer and game tolerate the extra event rate and whether you personally prefer the feel.

What to check before buying an 8K mouse
- Selectable rates: A mouse should let you fall back to 1K, 2K or another stable setting when a title or system struggles.
- Game and operating-system support: Confirm that your software stack handles high-frequency input without stutter.
- Connection design: For wired models, direct USB connectivity may be recommended. For wireless models, check receiver placement requirements and charging behavior.
- System headroom: Look at frame-time consistency and CPU capacity, not only the advertised polling number.
- Ergonomics and sensor behavior: Shape, weight, control, tracking and reliable switches affect practical aim more directly than a specification viewed in isolation.
- Evidence quality: Separate vendor-controlled latency figures and user impressions from independent aim testing. The latter is not established by independent aim testing.
Bottom line
8K polling changes a real but narrow part of mouse latency: the nominal report interval falls from 1ms at 1K to 0.125ms at 8K. That can be technically useful in a well-matched, high-performance setup. It does not guarantee a 0.875ms reduction in total game latency, higher FPS or better aim. Test it against a stable lower rate on your own computer and keep 8K only if it improves consistency without introducing stutter.
