Does Alice Nation Run Well on Steam Deck? Setup and Control Recommendations (2026)

Short answer: Alice Nation is potentially playable on Steam Deck, but Valve currently lists its compatibility as Unknown. The Steam build is Windows-only (alicenation.exe), so SteamOS is expected to run it through Proton rather than a native Linux version. Install it normally, keep Valve’s default compatibility choice for the first launch, and use the touchscreen or right trackpad as a mouse for the game’s card-dragging interface. The game’s turn-based pace, save-anytime option and lack of timed input are promising for handheld sessions; smooth frame rates, battery life and long-term stability have not been established in a game-specific test.

What the Steam listing confirms

Alice Nation is a puzzle-adventure game from Hanamiriro and 2P Games, released on Steam on October 15, 2026. When checked, the store page showed 98% positive reviews from 105 reviews. Those figures describe the Steam audience at that time, not a guarantee of Steam Deck performance.

Item What is documented What it means on Deck
Release October 15, 2026 You should verify that your installed build is current before troubleshooting.
Official Deck status Unknown Valve has not given the game a Verified or Playable result, so there is no official guarantee for controls, text readability, launch behavior or suspend/resume.
Operating-system build Windows; executable listed as alicenation.exe SteamOS normally relies on Proton to translate the Windows game rather than launching a native Linux build.
Input style Drag action and item cards onto locations and characters A pointer-like control is more important than a conventional twin-stick layout.
Accessibility tags Mouse Only Option; Playable without Timed Input; Save Anytime; Playable At Your Own Pace Touch or trackpad control and short, interruptible sessions are sensible starting assumptions.
Other Steam metadata Steam Cloud, controller tags and accessibility metadata are listed by SteamDB Cloud saves may help between Deck and desktop, but actual synchronization depends on the game’s implementation.

Valve describes Steam Deck as a portable gaming PC and says its Proton translation layer lets most Windows games run on SteamOS without developers doing a full port. That makes a Windows-only listing encouraging, but Proton support is not the same as a title-specific compatibility test. Valve’s compatibility rating is intended to communicate the experience users can expect; an Unknown label means you should validate the current build yourself.

What the Unknown label means in practice

Unknown is not a failure notice and it is not an assurance. It means Valve has not assigned the game a Verified or Playable result that covers the current build. Valve’s review process considers whether Proton and required middleware work and whether the controls, text and other handheld-facing details meet its expectations. Until that review exists, a successful launch on one Deck is useful evidence for that configuration, not a promise for every SteamOS update or hardware revision.

The label also explains why a Steam purchase can be reasonable while still requiring a short checkout test. If the title reaches its menu, accepts a card drag, saves and resumes correctly, you may have a good personal result even though the store badge remains Unknown. Conversely, a launch that works on a desktop does not prove that the Deck’s pointer, built-in display or sleep behavior will be comfortable.

Why the Windows build matters

SteamDB records Windows support and the alicenation.exe executable, with no native Linux build listed. On a Deck, SteamOS therefore presents the game through Proton. Proton handles the Windows-to-Linux translation, including graphics, input and supporting middleware. Most of the time Steam chooses an appropriate Proton version automatically, which is why forcing a version before you have a problem can create a problem that did not exist.

This distinction also explains why a positive PC review score cannot answer the Deck question by itself. A Windows desktop may use different graphics drivers, display scaling, input devices and sleep behavior. A Deck adds a fixed handheld screen, integrated controls, Steam Input and suspend/resume. Treat the Steam rating as information about the game, not as a compatibility certificate for the handheld.

Recommended first-time setup

Use this sequence for a clean baseline. It keeps the number of variables low so that any failure can be reproduced.

  1. Install from the Steam library. Let Steam finish the download and any shader or compatibility preparation it offers. Do not add a third-party launcher or manually copy a Windows installation for the first test.
  2. Leave compatibility at the default. On the game page, open the gear menu, choose Properties, then Compatibility. Do not check the option to force a specific Proton version on your first attempt. General Steam Deck guidance recommends Valve’s automatic choice unless troubleshooting requires a change.
  3. Launch once without changing performance settings. Wait through the first start and note whether the main menu appears, whether text is readable at the default scale and whether the game responds to the touchscreen or trackpad.
  4. Exercise the core interaction. Drag an action or item card to a location or character, open and close a menu, and perform any available selection or cancellation action. A game can reach its title screen while still having unusable pointer behavior.
  5. Test saving. Create a save, quit to the title screen, relaunch and confirm that the save is visible. Because the game advertises Save Anytime, you should be able to make this check without waiting for a chapter or checkpoint.
  6. Test suspend and resume. Press the Steam button and put the Deck to sleep for a short period, then return to the game. Verify that the pointer, drag operation and audio recover before relying on suspend during longer sessions.
  7. Only then tune the layout. If the default controls are awkward, make one change at a time and retest card dragging, menu navigation and saving. Keep a note of any Proton version or layout that works so you can restore it after an update.

For a repeatable check, write down the game version shown by Steam, the Proton choice, whether the title screen appeared, whether one card drag succeeded, whether a save survived a relaunch and whether sleep returned to the same scene. This simple log separates a game update from a controller change or a one-off launch problem.

Control layout that fits Alice Nation

The store’s “Mouse Only Option” tag and its description of dragging cards point to a mouse-style layout. The following is an editorial starting point, not an official Alice Nation control map.

Deck input Suggested role Why it helps
Touchscreen Primary pointer and drag surface Touching a card and moving it directly to a character or location mirrors the game’s documented interaction.
Right trackpad Pointer movement Useful when you want the screen unobstructed or prefer a physical surface for precise movement.
A button Left click or confirm Provides a one-handed confirmation after positioning the pointer.
B button Right click, back or cancel where the game exposes that action Gives you a quick escape from menus; the exact in-game behavior may vary.
D-pad Optional menu navigation Use it only if the game exposes directional focus. Do not sacrifice a reliable pointer for a directional scheme the game does not support.
Steam button plus trackpad or touchscreen Pointer recovery and text entry Useful if a desktop-style prompt appears or the pointer seems to leave the game window.

For a first session, avoid assigning every face button to an unverified action. The important test is whether you can pick up a card, keep holding it, move to the intended target and release without losing the selection. If touch works but the trackpad does not, use touch as the primary method rather than treating the difference as a game failure. If both feel unreliable, restore the default Steam Input layout before trying another Proton version; control mapping and compatibility are separate variables.

Dragging is easier to judge with a deliberately simple test: place the pointer over a clearly visible card, press and hold, move in a straight line to an obvious character or location, and release. Repeat with a second card and then open a menu. If only one target fails, the issue may be the game’s interaction rule rather than the Deck. If every drag fails, check the pointer and layout first.

What “runs well” can honestly mean right now

The game’s design appears well matched to handheld pacing. Its interactions are turn-based and puzzle-focused rather than dependent on rapid aiming. Steam lists it as playable without timed input and playable at your own pace, and the save-anytime tag supports brief sessions interrupted by sleep or real-life tasks. Those are usability advantages, not measurements of rendering performance.

No Alice Nation-specific frame-rate test, battery test, recommended resolution, crash-rate statistic or required Proton release has been published in the sources available for this guide. Consequently, nobody should promise a fixed frame rate, a particular battery duration or flawless suspend/resume behavior for the current build. The official Unknown label is the correct status to report until Valve or a reproducible hands-on test establishes more.

Readability on the built-in screen

Card games often put small labels, item descriptions and puzzle clues near the pointer. Check the actual text at the Deck’s native display before committing to a long portable playthrough. If a clue is difficult to read, use the game’s own display or text options if present; do not assume that a desktop resolution setting will scale cleanly on the handheld. The important question is whether you can identify a card, its destination and the resulting feedback without repeatedly opening a magnifier or moving the device closer.

Power and heat

The slow pace may make Alice Nation comfortable for travel, but it does not establish a battery advantage. A 2D-looking game can still keep the display, processor or translation layer active. Observe the Deck’s battery estimate during your own first hour, with brightness and frame-rate settings unchanged, then compare after any adjustment. Record the game version and Proton choice if you report the result, because an update can change power behavior.

Sleep and resume

Save Anytime reduces the cost of quitting manually, but it does not prove that every suspend cycle is safe. Test sleep after a save and while a menu is open. If the game returns to a blank screen, loses the pointer or stops accepting input, quit and relaunch rather than repeatedly forcing the Deck to sleep. Until a title-specific test confirms resume reliability, treat manual saves as the safer habit.

Deck or Windows PC?

A Windows desktop is the lower-uncertainty choice if you require a native listed platform, a conventional mouse and keyboard, or a compatibility result before buying. The Deck is more attractive when portability and interruption-friendly play matter most. Compare the two devices on the factors that affect this particular game:

Factor Steam Deck Windows PC
Compatibility certainty Official status is Unknown and Proton is expected. The listed Windows build matches the operating system directly.
Pointer precision Touchscreen or right trackpad can emulate a mouse, but comfort is personal. A physical mouse is the established pointer option.
Readability Verify card and clue text on the built-in screen. Monitor size and scaling are easier to choose.
Interruption Save Anytime and portable suspend are useful, but resume must be tested. Save Anytime still helps, while sleep behavior depends on the computer.
Cross-device saves Steam Cloud is listed, but synchronization depends on implementation. The same cloud caveat applies when moving between PCs and Deck.
Performance claims No title-specific frame-rate or battery figures are established. Desktop results cannot be assumed to match Deck behavior.

This is not a claim that one platform is universally better. It is a reminder that Alice Nation’s central question is pointer accuracy and compatibility certainty, not high-speed controller performance.

Troubleshooting a failed or awkward launch

The game does not open

  1. Restart the Deck and try the default compatibility setting once more. Confirm that Steam finished installing the game rather than leaving a paused update.
  2. Open Library > Alice Nation > gear icon > Properties > Compatibility.
  3. Enable the option to force a compatibility tool and test one current Proton release at a time. Do not change several versions between attempts; you need to know which change affected the result.
  4. After each attempt, record whether you reached the title screen, whether audio appeared and whether the Deck returned to the library. If one version works, keep it selected and recheck after future game or SteamOS updates.

There is no documented Alice Nation-specific Proton requirement, so a failed launch is not proof that every Proton version is incompatible. It is a signal to isolate the compatibility tool, the game build and the Deck’s current system software. Revert to automatic selection if testing a forced version makes the result worse.

The game opens, but cards will not drag

  • Try the touchscreen first, then the right trackpad. This distinguishes a game problem from a particular Steam Input mapping.
  • Confirm that the pointer visibly moves before pressing the card. Start with a simple card-to-character or card-to-location action rather than a complex puzzle sequence.
  • Restore the default controller layout and test again before creating custom bindings.
  • If touch works consistently, keep the touch layout for play and use the trackpad only for menus or text entry.

Menus or text are difficult to use

Use the pointer to reach the control instead of forcing a gamepad navigation scheme that the title may not expose. The D-pad is optional; a mouse-like layout is the safer baseline because the game advertises a mouse-only option. If a text field appears, use the Deck’s on-screen keyboard through the Steam button and touchscreen or trackpad, then return to the game and verify that focus comes back.

Saves do not appear on another device

Steam lists Cloud support, but cloud behavior depends on the game’s implementation. Make a local save, exit normally and wait for Steam to finish synchronization before launching on a second device. If the save is missing, return to the original device, confirm the save exists and check that Steam reports synchronization complete. Avoid deleting local files while diagnosing a cloud conflict.

A practical first-session checklist

Before judging the game, complete one short session rather than relying on the store badge alone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Reach the title screen with Valve’s automatic Proton choice.
  2. Confirm that the touchscreen or right trackpad moves a visible pointer.
  3. Drag one action card and one item card to an intended target.
  4. Open a menu, cancel or return, and check that pointer focus remains usable.
  5. Create a save, quit normally and verify it after relaunch.
  6. Sleep the Deck after saving and check audio, pointer and input on resume.
  7. Read a card description or clue at the default display scale.

If all seven checks pass, the game is a sensible personal fit even though the official rating remains Unknown. If one fails, change only one variable—layout or Proton version—and repeat the affected check.

Should you choose the Deck for Alice Nation?

The Deck is a reasonable choice if you value portable, interruption-friendly play and are comfortable validating a Windows game through Proton. Touchscreen or trackpad precision matters more than fast analog-stick control, and the no-timed-input and save-anytime tags fit commutes, breaks and other short sessions.

A Windows desktop remains the lower-uncertainty option if you need a platform with a native listed build, a mouse and keyboard already connected, or a compatibility guarantee before buying. The Deck becomes the better fit when portability and relaxed pacing outweigh the fact that Valve has not assigned a compatibility rating.

Make your decision using five checks: whether the game reaches its menu with the default Proton choice, whether card dragging is accurate, whether text is readable, whether a save survives a relaunch and whether suspend/resume works for your routine. Passing those checks is more useful than assuming that the Steam review percentage predicts handheld behavior.

Bottom line on performance and controls

Alice Nation should be approached as “potentially playable, not officially verified.” Install the Steam version, let Valve choose Proton initially, and begin with touchscreen or right-trackpad pointer control. Its card-and-puzzle design, no-timed-input mode and save-anytime feature are strong reasons to try it on a Deck, while the Unknown rating and lack of published frame-rate, battery and crash data mean that “runs well” remains a personal, build-specific conclusion until hands-on testing confirms it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Alice Nation Steam Deck Verified?

No. Valve lists Steam Deck compatibility as Unknown. That means there is no official Verified or Playable guarantee for launch behavior, controls, text readability or suspend/resume.

Does Alice Nation have a native Linux version?

SteamDB lists a Windows build with the executable alicenation.exe and no native Linux build. SteamOS is therefore expected to run it through Proton.

Which Proton version should I use?

Start with Steam’s automatic compatibility choice. If the default launch fails, force one current Proton release at a time, record the result and keep the version that works. No Alice Nation-specific Proton requirement is documented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the best Steam Deck controls for Alice Nation?

Use the touchscreen as the primary pointer and drag surface, or the right trackpad for pointer movement. Map A to left click or confirm and B to back or cancel where appropriate. The exact actions are not an official control map.

Can I play Alice Nation in short sessions?

The Steam listing marks it as playable without timed input, save-anytime and playable at your own pace. Those features suit short sessions, although suspend/resume should still be tested on your Deck.

Will Alice Nation saves sync between Deck and PC?

Steam Cloud support is listed, but synchronization depends on the game’s implementation. Save and exit normally, wait for Steam to report synchronization complete, then check the save on the other device.

Are frame rate and battery life known on Steam Deck?

No title-specific frame-rate, battery, crash-rate or resolution measurements are established. Do not promise a fixed FPS or battery duration until a reproducible hands-on test covers the current build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Alice Nation is a promising but unverified Steam Deck game. Use the default Proton choice first, begin with touchscreen or right-trackpad controls, and validate dragging, saving, readability and resume behavior yourself. Its relaxed puzzle structure fits handheld play, but performance and battery claims remain unconfirmed.
