A simple bowl-and-cup model can demonstrate the process and separate salt from water. It is slow and weather-dependent, however, and a successful demonstration does not show that the collected water is safe to drink or that a homemade still can meet household needs.
How a solar still works
Sunlight warms the source water, causing some of it to evaporate. The vapor cools when it reaches the transparent cover and condenses into droplets. If the cover slopes toward a low point, the droplets run down and fall into a separate collection cup. Salt and other nonvolatile material largely remain in the source vessel. The U.S. Department of Energy-hosted Florida Solar Energy Center describes this phase-change process in its solar water still activity.
This is a useful demonstration of evaporation and condensation, not a performance guarantee. It also does not make every kind of contaminated water safe.
Build a tabletop solar still
What you need
- A clean bowl
- A clean cup that fits inside the bowl and sits below its rim
- Salty water
- Clear plastic food wrap
- Tape or a rubber band
- A small, clean weight
- A sunny location

Assembly
- Set the clean cup upright in the center of the bowl. Keep its rim above the source water level.
- Pour salty water into the bowl around the cup. Avoid splashing any into the cup.
- Stretch clear plastic wrap over the bowl and seal it around the rim with tape or a rubber band.
- Place the small weight on the wrap directly above the cup, making a shallow low point. The wrap should slope toward the cup without touching it or the water.
- Put the still in direct sunlight and leave it undisturbed while droplets form and run toward the low point.
Keep the cup clean and handle it carefully when collecting condensate so the output does not touch the source water or dirty hands and surfaces. This activity demonstrates salt separation; it does not certify the water as safe under every contamination scenario.
Can you use one in an emergency?
A sunlit pit still is a different educational design: a container sits below the low point of transparent flexible plastic stretched over a dug area, where condensed moisture can collect. The DOE-hosted Florida Solar Energy Center’s solar still activity identifies leaks around the plastic, a slope that fails to direct droplets into the collector, and poor weight placement as practical causes of failure. It describes a classroom exercise, not a validated emergency water supply.

Neither a tabletop still nor a pit still should be treated as a dependable source of drinking water. The cited educational guides do not establish a reliable output for household needs. Sunlight, weather, surface area, and construction affect operation, so a small amount collected—or none at all—is possible.
What a solar still does and does not remove
The CDC says distillation systems boil water and collect it after it cools. Distillation removes parasites, bacteria, viruses, and many chemicals, including several metals, salts, nitrate, and minerals. It does not remove some volatile organic compounds, volatile solvents, and certain pesticides. See the CDC’s home water treatment systems overview.

A homemade solar still is not the same as a tested household distillation appliance. Do not assume that all the contaminant-removal claims for designed systems apply to an improvised device. Nor does clear appearance, a neutral taste, or successful collection prove that water is potable.

Do not use a homemade still on water suspected of fuel, toxic chemical, or radioactive contamination. The CDC warns that household treatment methods do not make water containing those hazards safe. Follow the instructions of local public-health authorities or your water utility. If authorities issue a “do not drink” advisory for chemicals or toxins, the CDC says to use commercially bottled water for drinking and cooking. Do not treat an unknown spill or floodwater as safe because a still collected droplets. For an emergency, use the water source and treatment method specified by local authorities rather than relying on this demonstration.

If no droplets reach the cup
- Check that the plastic wrap is sealed around the bowl’s rim.
- Make sure the wrap slopes toward the cup and the weight is positioned directly over it.
- Confirm that droplets can fall into the cup without the wrap touching the cup or source water.
- Allow for the fact that the setup depends on sunlight and conditions; the educational instructions do not promise a collection time or volume.
How to choose between the designs
