Yes. An Xbox Wireless Controller with a compatible rechargeable battery pack can keep working while connected by USB. The cable supplies power to the controller and charges the installed pack, so you can continue playing instead of waiting for a full charge. Microsoft’s current Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C Cable is specifically designed to charge while you play or while the console is in standby.

What “rechargeable Xbox controller” means
Xbox controllers normally use either two AA batteries or a separately installed rechargeable battery pack. The controller itself is not a single rechargeable unit in the way a phone is. When a compatible pack is fitted, the controller’s USB connection can provide power for gameplay and recharge that pack at the same time.

This behavior is different from simply connecting a controller that contains disposable or standard rechargeable AA cells. Whether AA cells can be charged in place depends on the battery design and the charger circuitry. Unless the AA manufacturer explicitly documents in-controller USB charging, remove the cells and use their external charger.
How charging while you play works
The USB connection powers the controller
With a compatible pack installed, a USB cable connected to the controller provides operating power. The console, PC or another suitable USB power source can therefore keep the controller running during a session.
The pack receives charge at the same time
The pack’s charging electronics use the USB input to replenish its cells while the controller is connected. You can keep playing during this process. When the cable is unplugged, the controller returns to battery operation.

Standby charging is a separate use case
Microsoft says its current pack can charge after play and while an Xbox is in standby. Standby behavior can depend on the console’s power settings and whether the USB port continues to provide power, so a pack that does not charge in standby may still charge normally while the console is running or from another powered USB source.
Which pack fits which Xbox controller?
Identify the controller’s connector before buying a battery. USB-C and micro-USB are not interchangeable, and the shape of the battery compartment and contacts also matters.

“Up to 30 hours” is a maximum manufacturer estimate, not a universal runtime. A headset, vibration, accessories, wireless conditions and play habits can reduce the time. Microsoft specifically qualifies the number as varying significantly and identifies its testing as having used preproduction units.

PowerA’s licensed alternative
PowerA’s XBPW0119-01 Play & Charge Kit takes a different approach: the package contains two 1100mAh rechargeable batteries and a 10-foot (3-meter) USB cable. PowerA says there are two charging methods: charge while playing through the controller, or connect the battery pack directly to the cable. The company states up to 20 hours of gameplay per fully charged battery.
PowerA lists compatibility with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows, while explicitly excluding Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. Because Xbox One controllers exist with different connector revisions, confirm the port and the exact model before ordering. A long cable is useful when the console or PC is several feet away, but it does not change connector compatibility or charging speed.

Do rechargeable AA batteries charge through the Xbox cable?
Usually, you should assume no unless the AA battery maker expressly supports charging through the controller. A normal USB cable can power the controller, but it does not turn every pair of rechargeable AAs into a USB-chargeable pack. The battery chemistry, protective circuitry, contacts and charging control all have to be designed for that method.
For ordinary NiMH rechargeable AAs, the dependable procedure is to remove both cells and place them in the manufacturer’s external charger. Never mix rechargeable and disposable cells, mix cells with different charge levels, or leave damaged, leaking or swollen cells in the controller. If a battery manufacturer supplies a USB-chargeable AA product, follow that product’s instructions rather than assuming the Xbox controller will regulate it correctly.
How to play while charging: step-by-step
- Identify the controller. Look at the port on the top of the controller. USB-C has a small, rounded, symmetrical opening; micro-USB has a more tapered, asymmetrical shape. Check the model or console generation if the port is difficult to identify.
- Match the pack. Buy a pack explicitly listed for that controller generation and connector. For a current USB-C Xbox Wireless Controller, the Microsoft USB-C pack is the directly specified fit. For an Xbox 360 controller, use Xbox 360 Play & Charge hardware.
- Install the pack correctly. Remove the battery-door cover, take out disposable cells, seat the rechargeable pack against the contacts and replace the cover. Do not force a pack that does not align.
- Connect the cable. Plug the correct end into the controller and the other end into the Xbox, PC or a powered USB source. A cable can carry power even when the controller is being used wirelessly, but a data-capable cable is preferable when you want a wired connection to a PC or console.
- Continue playing. The controller should remain usable while the pack charges. Keep the cable routed so that it is not pulled sharply from the port during play.
- Finish or disconnect safely. When you are done, you can leave the pack connected to finish charging if the power source and manufacturer instructions allow it, or unplug it and store the controller normally.

What to check when charging does not work
The controller works by cable but the battery level does not rise
- Confirm that a rechargeable pack, rather than AA cells, is installed.
- Check that the pack is seated flat and its contacts are aligned.
- Try another known-good USB cable and another powered USB port.
- Inspect the controller port and cable for lint, bent parts or looseness; do not insert metal tools into the port.
- Test the pack with the charging method specified by its manufacturer. A PowerA XBPW0119-01 pack, for example, can be charged directly at the battery as well as through the controller.
The cable will not fit
Stop rather than forcing it. A USB-C controller needs a USB-C plug, while an older micro-USB controller needs the matching cable. Xbox 360 Play & Charge accessories are a separate legacy system. A cable that fits the console or PC may still be the wrong cable for the controller.

The controller disconnects when the cable moves
Try a shorter or better-fitting cable, remove tension from the connector and test the controller’s port with another cable. If the connection remains intermittent, the port, cable or pack may be worn. Wireless play can continue on battery power, but it will not repair a failing charging connection.
The pack becomes unusually hot, swells or smells strange
Stop using it, disconnect the cable and move it away from flammable materials. Do not puncture, open or continue charging a damaged pack. Follow the battery maker’s disposal and replacement instructions.
Practical expectations for charge time and battery life
Microsoft’s under-four-hour figure describes the time to a full charge for its current pack; it is not a promise that every third-party battery will reach full capacity in that time. PowerA states the capacity of each XBPW0119-01 battery as 1100mAh and claims up to 20 hours of gameplay per fully charged battery, but does not state a full-charge time in the supplied product information.

- Verify that the product explicitly says it charges through the controller while playing.
- Check the stated full-charge time, claimed runtime and whether those figures include caveats.
- Measure the distance to the console or PC if cable length matters; PowerA’s cited kit includes a 10-foot (3-meter) cable.
- For AA cells, confirm whether the manufacturer permits in-controller USB charging. If not, use an external charger.
- Keep the purchase receipt and follow the pack maker’s storage, charging and disposal guidance.
