Nintendo’s published box contents list the console and accessories but no Zelda game or other software. If you want a Zelda title for the system, you must buy it separately.

What the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition includes
Nintendo’s U.S. product listing identifies the edition by its hardware design and then specifies the physical items in the package. The list does not contain a game card, download code, digital entitlement, or bundled Zelda software.

You can verify the list on Nintendo’s U.S. product page. Nintendo UK’s announcement likewise describes the anniversary product as a themed console, dock and Joy-Con 2 controllers featuring Triforce motifs, without naming a game in the package.

Why the Zelda name does not mean a game is bundled
Special-edition consoles commonly use a game series for the industrial design while selling software separately. In this case, the Zelda branding refers to visual treatment on the console, dock and controllers. It does not identify a “console plus game” bundle.
The safest way to interpret any Switch 2 listing is to read the included items or what’s in the box section rather than infer contents from the product name, promotional artwork or the presence of a character logo. A game bundle normally names the specific title and the format supplied—for example, a physical game card or a digital download code. The anniversary listing names hardware accessories but no such software item.
Release date and availability
Nintendo announced October 29, 2026 as the availability date for the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition in its holiday-bundle announcement, dated September 16, 2026. That date is a scheduled release date, not evidence that every region or retailer will have stock immediately.
When the U.S. listing was checked on October 13, 2026, it displayed “Currently unavailable.” That status can change as launch inventory is assigned, so use the live listing for the current ordering decision. The U.S. and UK pages establish the bundle contents, but they do not guarantee identical retail timing, inventory or purchase rules in every country.

Which Zelda games can you buy separately?
Nintendo lists Switch 2 versions of major Zelda titles separately from the anniversary console. Buying one of these games gives you Zelda software for the system, but it does not alter what was included in the hardware box.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Nintendo has an official physical listing for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. It is presented as a separate Switch 2 game and includes performance improvements plus Switch 2-exclusive features, including ZELDA NOTES.
Because this is a separately listed product, a buyer who chooses the anniversary console and wants Tears of the Kingdom should add the game as a separate purchase. Check whether the retailer is selling the physical edition or another format before paying; the anniversary hardware listing itself does not provide the title.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Nintendo also lists The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Existing owners of the Nintendo Switch version can purchase an upgrade pack. Nintendo says eligible active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access some Switch 2 Edition content at no additional cost.

Eligibility depends on the buyer’s existing game ownership and membership status. How to check a listing before you buy
- Confirm the exact product name. Look for the full “Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition” wording, not a retailer-created title that combines several products.
- Open the included-items section. Confirm that the list contains the console, Joy-Con 2 controllers, dock, AC adapter, USB-C cable, grip, straps and HDMI cable. Look for a separately named game if software is important to you.
- Check the software format. If a listing includes a game, it should identify whether you receive a physical card, a download code or another digital entitlement. Do not treat screenshots of game artwork as proof of inclusion.

Assuming every Zelda title works the same way
Tears of the Kingdom has a separately listed Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with performance improvements and ZELDA NOTES. Breath of the Wild has an upgrade-pack path for existing Switch owners, with some content available to eligible active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. Those are different purchase situations, so identify the title and your ownership status first.

You already own Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch
Check Nintendo’s upgrade information before buying another full copy. The upgrade-pack option is designed for existing Switch owners, while some Switch 2 Edition content may be available without an additional charge to eligible active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members.
You are buying a gift
Tell the recipient that the anniversary package is hardware-focused and budget separately for a game. Confirm the recipient’s region, because availability and retailer listings can differ even when the console design is the same.
