For a U.S. mortgage, a lender’s name change alone does not show that your loan agreement, interest rate, or payment schedule has changed. First find out whether the notice describes a corporate rebrand, a sale of your mortgage, or a transfer of servicing: those are different events with different effects. Compare the notice and your latest statement with your signed promissory note, and ask the lender or servicer for written clarification if the notice appears to alter a contractual term.
What kind of change happened?
The word “rebrand” describes a change in a company’s name or public identity; it does not, by itself, tell you whether your loan’s owner or the company handling payments has changed. A mortgage can also be sold without changing its servicer, or its servicing can move to another company without changing who owns the loan.

| Event | What changes | What it means for your loan | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corporate rebrand | A company changes its name or branding. | The label alone does not establish whether the creditor, servicer, or legal rights changed. CFPB guidance on mortgage sales and servicing transfers does not cover every possible corporate restructuring. | Confirm the legal entity, account details, and whether the notice says the owner or servicer changed. |
| Mortgage sale or ownership transfer | A new entity owns the mortgage. | The sale itself does not change the loan’s contract terms. It does not necessarily change who collects payments. | Look for the new owner’s identity and contact information, and determine whether the notice separately describes a servicing transfer. |
| Servicing transfer | A different company collects payments and handles servicing tasks. | Payment handling changes. The transfer does not affect loan terms other than those directly related to servicing. | Check the effective date, payment instructions, contact information, and transition protections. |
For an ownership transfer, the new owner generally must notify you within 30 days of the effective transfer date and provide identifying and contact information, according to the CFPB’s mortgage-sale guidance. A servicing transfer has its own notice requirements under Regulation X, 12 CFR § 1024.33.

Does the change alter your agreement, rate, or payment schedule?
If the mortgage was sold
The CFPB says selling a mortgage does not change the terms in your agreement. A sale does not necessarily change the servicer, either. If your notice says the owner changed, check whether it also announces a separate servicing transfer before changing where you pay.

If servicing was transferred
Under Regulation X, the transfer does not affect any loan term or condition except terms directly related to servicing. The CFPB’s model servicing-transfer notice puts this plainly: “Nothing else about your mortgage loan will change.” That is model language about a servicing transfer—not a blanket assurance about every transaction called a rebrand.
If the company simply changed its name
A company name change alone is not enough to determine the legal effect of a transaction. The cited CFPB guidance addresses mortgage ownership and servicing transfers, not every form of corporate reorganization. If a notice appears to change your rate, amount due, or payment schedule, compare it with your signed note and ask the company to explain the change in writing.

How to check the notice against your account
Use your signed promissory note and latest mortgage statement as references. The CFPB’s mortgage-servicing guidance explains the rules servicers must follow; the CFPB’s model disclosure describing mortgage servicing also sets out the role of a servicer.

- Legal names: Identify the owner and the servicer named in the notice. They may be different entities.
- Dates: Note the transfer’s effective date, the last date the old servicer accepts payments, and the first date the new servicer accepts them.
- Payment instructions: Check the new mailing address or electronic-payment details, and follow any instructions about optional insurance.
- Statement details: Compare the amount due, interest rate, and allocation to principal, interest, and escrow with your latest statement and loan documents.
- Notice contacts: Keep the contact information for the old and new servicers so you can resolve a payment or account question.
Where should you send your next payment?
If servicing moved, use the new servicer’s payment instructions from the date stated in the notice. Update automatic payments through your bank or credit union if needed, and allow time for mailed payments to arrive. Review subsequent statements to confirm that your payments were credited correctly.
During the 60-day period beginning on the effective date of a servicing transfer, a payment the old servicer receives on or before the applicable due date—including an allowed grace period—cannot be treated as late for any purpose under Regulation X. The CFPB also says the new servicer may not charge a late fee or treat such a qualifying payment as late. This protection does not replace the need to follow the new payment instructions once they take effect.

- Contact the servicers: If a transfer-related problem occurs, contact both the old and new servicers. Explain the issue and ask for the account history or correction in writing.
- Send a written information request or notice of error: The CFPB recommends using these options to address servicing problems. Follow the servicer’s stated contact instructions and keep a copy of what you send.
- Check the response against your records: Confirm the payment date, amount, and posting on your statement. If a notice appears to change an actual contract term, ask for the basis in writing and compare it with your signed loan documents.
