Moisturizing and certain topical ingredients are other options. Improvement is gradual, and ongoing care may be needed.
What keratosis pilaris is—and why scrubbing has limits
KP causes small, rough bumps associated with plugs of dead skin cells. It commonly appears on the upper arms and thighs, and dryness can make the bumps more noticeable. People often describe the texture as “sandpaper,” “goosebumps” or “chicken skin”; these descriptions are not a diagnosis. The American Academy of Dermatology’s overview describes the condition and its appearance.

A scrub can only address surface texture. Gentle exfoliation with a soft washcloth or loofah may help remove dead skin from the surface, but more friction is not better. Harsh scrubs, vigorous rubbing and picking can irritate the area and worsen the bumps. The AAD advises gentle self-care and warns against scrubbing.
Ways to manage rough, bumpy skin
There is no single best approach for everyone. The options work differently: physical exfoliation addresses surface buildup, keratolytic products help loosen dead skin cells, and moisturizers address dryness. Products vary in strength, and each may irritate some skin.

| Option | Purpose | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Soft washcloth or loofah | Gently remove surface dead skin | Stop if rubbing irritates the skin; avoid forceful scrubbing. |
| Products with urea, lactic acid, salicylic acid or other alpha hydroxy acids | Help loosen dead skin cells; some also help with dryness | Can dry or irritate skin. Follow product directions and ease off if irritation develops. |
| Moisturizer | Reduce dryness, which can make KP more noticeable | Use consistently; a thick cream or ointment may suit dry skin. |
The AAD and Mayo Clinic describe topical treatment options, including exfoliating ingredients such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid and urea, as well as some retinoids. These ingredients are not interchangeable, and products come in different strengths. Use them as directed; pause and seek advice if you develop significant dryness or irritation.
Make moisturizing part of the routine
Apply moisturizer after bathing while skin is still damp to help address dryness. The AAD recommends a thick, oil-free cream or ointment. Mayo Clinic’s treatment guidance also describes thicker moisturizers as part of care.

What results to expect
Changes take time, and you may need to try more than one approach. KP treatment does not cure the condition; maintenance may be needed to keep bumps controlled. Mayo Clinic notes that KP may last for years, though it commonly clears over time, even without treatment.
The AAD advises contacting a dermatologist if there is no improvement after following a treatment plan for 4 to 6 weeks. That is a treatment follow-up recommendation, not a promise that a particular scrub will work within that period.

When to get professional advice
Seek advice if home care is not helping, the bumps are persistent or bothersome, the skin is itchy or inflamed, or you are not sure the bumps are KP. A clinician can assess the skin; Mayo Clinic says KP can often be diagnosed by visual examination. Local care pathways differ: NHS guidance suggests speaking to a pharmacist if self-care is not helping or the condition is bothering you, while a dermatologist can advise on treatment options. A dermatologist may recommend prescription medicine or, if moisturizer and medicine do not help, laser or light treatment; procedures are not necessary or guaranteed for everyone.
