A higher refresh rate can use more phone battery, but there is no universal “120 Hz costs X%” rule. Google says its Pixel Smooth Display feature increases battery usage, while the actual effect depends on the phone’s refresh-rate range, whether the rate adapts to content, the screen and brightness, and what you do on the device.
What a higher refresh rate changes
Refresh rate is the number of times a display can update each second, measured in hertz (Hz). A 60 Hz screen can update up to 60 times per second; a 120 Hz screen can update up to 120 times per second. Higher rates can make scrolling, animations and supported games look smoother.

Those additional updates require the display system and related hardware to work more often. That is why a high-refresh setting can increase power use. The increase is a trade-off for smoother motion, not a guarantee that the phone will consume twice as much power. A 120 Hz label describes a maximum capability, not necessarily the rate used for every task.

What Google’s Pixel documentation actually confirms
Google’s Pixel display-settings guidance says Smooth Display can automatically raise the refresh rate for some content and explicitly states: “This increases battery usage.” The same guidance says Smooth Display is disabled when Battery Saver is on.

The supported range differs by model. Google’s examples show why a result from one Pixel—or any other phone—should not be treated as a universal 60 Hz-versus-120 Hz result.

Google’s hardware specifications also describe displays whose refresh rate can move across a range to balance viewing quality and battery performance. For example, a panel listed as 1–120 Hz can operate below 120 Hz when the content does not need maximum smoothness. That is materially different from running at a fixed 120 Hz all day.
Why the battery effect varies from phone to phone
Adaptive refresh changes the amount of time spent at the maximum rate
An adaptive display chooses among refresh rates instead of using one fixed value for every screen. Scrolling may trigger a higher rate, while a static page, photo or other low-motion content may allow the phone to reduce it. The maximum printed on a specification sheet therefore does not tell you how long the panel actually remains at that maximum.

One Pixel may top out at 90 Hz, another at 120 Hz, and another may be able to fall as low as 1 Hz. The display hardware, software controls and power-management behavior are part of the result. Comparing “120 Hz” phones without identifying the exact model can hide those differences.
Your workload matters
Battery use depends on what the phone is doing. A day dominated by scrolling and animated interfaces can exercise a high-refresh mode more often than a day spent reading static text. Video playback, gaming, browsing, calls, audio and standby also place different demands on the phone.

Google’s battery information describes estimated battery life using mixed activities that include talk, mobile data, standby, browsing, audio playback and video streaming. Those estimates are intended to represent a usage profile; they do not isolate refresh rate as the only changing variable.
Screen and system conditions matter too
Brightness, wireless signal, background applications, temperature, battery health and processor activity can all affect a day’s runtime. If one day is brighter, has weaker reception or includes more demanding apps, its battery result cannot be attributed to refresh rate alone.

The official documentation reviewed here does not provide a controlled, general percentage, number of hours or runtime reduction for changing from 60 Hz to 120 Hz. It supports the direction of the effect—higher-refresh Smooth Display increases battery usage—but not a universal magnitude.
That means claims such as “120 Hz drains 20% more,” “you lose two hours,” or “it uses twice the battery” need a named phone, a named test and clearly stated conditions. Without those details, the number is not transferable to your device.
A meaningful comparison would keep the following variables constant:

- The same phone and software version.
- The same battery starting level and battery condition.
- The same screen brightness and display settings.
- The same apps or test content, in the same order.
- The same Wi-Fi or mobile-network conditions.
- The same test duration and screen-on time.
Only the refresh-rate setting should change. Google’s mixed-use battery methodology does not report that kind of isolated 60 Hz-versus-120 Hz experiment, so its general battery-life estimates cannot be used to calculate one.
How to tell whether your own phone is affected
You can make a useful personal comparison without assuming that your result applies to every phone.
- Choose a normal repeatable activity. For example, use the same browsing session, game, reading period or video playlist on two separate tests.
- Keep the conditions consistent. Match brightness, volume, network connection, app versions and approximate room temperature. Start with similar battery percentages.
- Test the high-refresh setting first or second, then repeat if practical. A single day can be distorted by background updates or a different signal.
- Record screen-on time and battery change. Compare the same activity window rather than comparing two entire days with unrelated usage.
- Interpret the result as device-specific. Your finding describes your phone and workload, not every 120 Hz phone.
This approach can show whether the difference matters to your routine, but it still will not produce a universal number for other models.
How to reduce refresh-related battery use
Turn off the high-refresh feature when battery life is the priority
On a supported Pixel, open Settings and search for Smooth Display, or open the phone’s display settings and switch the feature off. The exact menu presentation can vary by model and software version. Disabling it keeps the phone from using the adaptive high-refresh behavior provided by that setting.
Use Battery Saver when you need broader savings
Google says Battery Saver disables Smooth Display on supported Pixel devices. Enable Battery Saver from the phone’s battery controls when you need to extend remaining runtime and are willing to accept the other restrictions that Battery Saver may apply.

Keep high refresh enabled when smooth motion is worth it
If scrolling comfort, animation smoothness or gaming responsiveness matters more than extracting every possible hour, leave the adaptive feature enabled and observe your own normal-day battery result. The official guidance establishes extra usage, but it does not say that the difference will be large enough to matter for every person.

“120 Hz always means the screen is refreshing at 120 Hz”
Not necessarily. Adaptive displays can move through a range, and Google lists Pixel models with ranges such as 1–120 Hz and 60–120 Hz. The maximum rate is not the same as a constant operating rate.
“A higher refresh rate doubles battery drain”
The refresh number doubles from 60 to 120, but battery consumption does not automatically double. The display may spend much of its time below the maximum, and the display is only one part of total phone power use.
“A battery-life estimate proves the refresh-rate penalty”
It does not. Google’s estimates combine activities such as calls, data use, standby, browsing, audio and video. They are not a controlled experiment in which refresh rate is the only variable.

“A result from one phone applies to another”
It does not. Refresh ranges, adaptive algorithms, display hardware and software differ by model. Even two phones with a 120 Hz maximum can spend different amounts of time at that rate.

What to check when comparing phones
If battery life is important, do not compare phones using the refresh-rate maximum alone. Check these details in the exact model’s specifications and settings:
- Refresh-rate range: a range that reaches below the maximum can reduce updates during static content.
- Adaptive behavior: determine whether the phone changes rate automatically or offers only fixed choices.
- Control availability: check whether you can disable the high-refresh mode or whether Battery Saver changes it automatically.
- Test conditions: require any claimed battery difference to identify brightness, workload, network, software and test duration.
- Whole-device results: look at measured screen-on time and mixed-use endurance, not a refresh-rate label by itself.
Google’s Pixel specifications illustrate the need for this model-by-model approach: some listed devices reach 90 Hz, others 120 Hz, and some 120 Hz panels can scale down to 1 Hz.
The practical answer
A higher refresh rate can drain a phone battery faster, and Google explicitly warns that Pixel Smooth Display increases battery usage. The size of the effect is not established as one universal percentage or number of minutes. It depends on the phone’s adaptive range, how often your content triggers the higher rate, the display and brightness, and the rest of your workload.
