Existing compatible 4G SIMs from Jio, Airtel and Vi can work in a 5G phone. To actually connect, you still need a 5G-compatible handset, 5G coverage where you are, and a recharge or plan that qualifies for the operator’s particular 5G access or benefit.
A SIM upgrade cannot make a 4G-only phone connect to 5G. If your phone displays 4G, the usual causes are coverage, handset compatibility, a disabled 5G setting, outdated software or plan eligibility—not automatically the age of the SIM.

What you need for 5G service
Think of 5G access as four separate checks rather than one “5G SIM” requirement:

- A compatible phone: The exact handset model must support 5G and the network bands used by your operator. A 4G-only handset cannot be upgraded by changing its SIM.
- Local 5G coverage: 5G availability is location-specific. A phone can fall back to 4G when 5G is not available.
- An eligible plan or offer: SIM compatibility does not automatically include every 5G benefit. Operators set eligibility for offers such as unlimited 5G data or other features.
These conditions are independent. Passing one does not guarantee the others. For example, an eligible plan and a 5G phone will still show 4G in an area without the operator’s 5G service.

What each major operator says
The published guidance from India’s three major consumer operators is consistent on the SIM question, but their plan rules and network features differ.

These are operator statements about their own networks and offers, not a universal rule that every Indian carrier or every very old SIM will support every service. If your SIM is damaged, cannot register on the network or is tied to an incompatible legacy service, customer support may still recommend a replacement for that separate reason.
Do you need a 5G plan?
There are two different questions: whether the phone may attach to a 5G network, and whether your plan includes a particular 5G benefit. A compatible SIM and handset can be technically ready while the account remains ineligible for an operator’s promotional or unlimited-data offer.
Jio plan eligibility
Jio lists an eligible True 5G plan as one of the conditions for True 5G access. The exact qualifying recharges and terms can change, so verify the current offer in the MyJio app or the plan terms shown for your number. Do not rely on an old recharge screenshot or a plan description copied from another date.

Airtel plan and feature eligibility
Airtel’s general 5G setup guidance concerns a compatible device, software, settings and coverage. Its postpaid 5G slicing FAQ describes a specific feature: Airtel says slicing is auto-enabled on its postpaid plans without an additional charge when the device, software and 5G coverage conditions are met, and that the device must support 5G SA. Those statements describe slicing, not a blanket promise that every prepaid recharge includes unlimited 5G data.
Vi plan eligibility
Vi’s published 5G Unlimited terms connect access to eligible Vi 5G recharge plans. A 4G SIM can be used, but the current recharge must qualify under the terms in force for your account and location. Confirm validity, data rules and any activation requirement in Vi’s app or current offer page before recharging.
Because plan catalogs and promotions change, compare the exact offer name, validity, data benefit and eligibility conditions rather than searching for a generic “5G plan price.” No single nationwide price or plan list applies to all three operators.
How to activate 5G on your phone
Menu wording differs by manufacturer and software version, but the process follows the same sequence. Keep the SIM in the phone while completing these checks.

- Confirm the exact model. Open Settings > About phone (or the equivalent device-information page) and note the full model number, not just the marketing name. Check that model against your operator’s current supported-device information.
- Install available system updates. On Android, look under Settings > System > Software update; on iPhone, use Settings > General > Software Update. Install updates while connected to Wi-Fi or with sufficient mobile data and battery.
- Choose a 5G network mode. On many Android phones this is under Settings > Network & internet or Connections > Mobile network > Preferred network type. Select an option such as 5G/4G/3G/2G (Auto) or 5G preferred. On iPhone, use Settings > Mobile Service/Cellular > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data, then select 5G Auto or 5G On if offered. The labels can vary by region and carrier.
- Check the correct SIM for data. With two SIMs installed, open the phone’s SIM or mobile-data settings and assign the 5G-capable operator as the data line. Some handsets support 5G on only one slot at a time; follow the model’s own instructions.
- Restart or toggle airplane mode. A restart, or switching airplane mode on for about 10 seconds and then off, can force the phone to re-register. This does not create coverage where none exists, but it can apply a changed setting.
- Verify the account offer. Open the operator’s current app or account page and check that the active plan qualifies for the 5G service or named benefit. If the app asks you to claim or enable an offer, complete that step.
Do not buy a replacement SIM solely because the phone initially shows 4G. First complete the model, coverage, settings, software and plan checks above.
Why a 5G phone may still show 4G
A 5G icon is not guaranteed continuously. Phones commonly use 4G when 5G coverage is weak, unavailable at the current address or temporarily unsuitable for the network. Jio says its phone can move between its 5G and 4G networks without user intervention, so seeing 4G outside a supported 5G area is expected behavior rather than proof of a bad SIM.
Use this troubleshooting order
- Check local coverage first. Look up the exact location in the operator’s current app or coverage information. Coverage can differ between neighborhoods, buildings and indoor areas; a city-level label is not a guarantee at your room or workplace.
- Recheck the handset variant. Two phones with the same retail name can have different regional model numbers, software and supported bands. Confirm the complete model with the operator, especially if the phone was imported.
- Enable automatic 5G selection. Make sure the preferred-network setting has not been limited to 4G or LTE. If the phone has separate settings for each SIM, change the setting on the line used for mobile data.
- Update and restart. Install the latest available handset software, restart, and allow a few minutes for network registration.
- Confirm the plan. Check the current account page for eligibility, validity and any offer-claim step. A plan that provides ordinary mobile data may not include an operator’s unlimited-5G benefit.
- Test in an open, covered location. If 5G appears outdoors or in another supported area, the original location or building penetration is the likely limitation. If it never appears despite all checks, contact the operator with the exact model number and location.
These checks identify common prerequisites; they cannot diagnose every account, tower or hardware fault remotely. Avoid resetting the phone or replacing the SIM until the operator confirms that step is necessary, because a reset erases local settings and data without solving a coverage gap.

Does the age of your SIM matter?
For Jio, Airtel and Vi, the cited guidance specifically says an existing 4G SIM can work in a compatible 5G phone. That means “4G SIM” does not automatically mean “5G blocked.” A replacement may still be appropriate if the card is physically damaged, repeatedly loses registration, is not provisioned for your account, or cannot be read by the handset. Those are service or hardware issues, not a normal requirement to purchase a special 5G card.

Keep your existing number and SIM while testing whenever possible. A SIM swap can require identity verification, temporarily interrupt service and change which SIM receives calls or one-time passwords. It should be a targeted fix, not the first response to a missing 5G icon.

“5G phone” is not a complete compatibility description. The operator needs to support the exact model and network configuration. Check all of the following:
- The phone is a genuine 5G model, not a 4G variant with a similar name.
- The regional model supports the operator’s required 5G bands and network mode.
- The manufacturer has released software that enables the operator’s service on that model.
- The phone’s 5G radio is available on the SIM slot being used for mobile data.
- The device is not restricted by an importer, carrier lock or unsupported firmware.
Jio states that new 5G smartphones sold in Indian markets are compatible with its standalone network. Treat that as guidance for devices sold in India, not a guarantee for every imported handset. For any imported or unusual model, verify compatibility with the operator before assuming that a 5G logo on the box is enough.

When choosing between operators or recharges, compare the details that affect your actual use rather than an old rollout headline or a generic “5G ready” label.

Check these points immediately before purchase because coverage maps, supported-device lists and promotional terms are changeable. The operator’s current app and terms are the authoritative place to confirm your number and address.
When should you replace the SIM?
Request a replacement only after the operator identifies a SIM-specific problem or your card is damaged, lost or unreadable. If the same SIM works for calls and 4G data in the 5G phone, a 5G-only replacement is unlikely to address missing coverage, an incompatible handset or an ineligible plan. Keep the old SIM until the replacement is activated and tested, and follow the operator’s identity-verification process.
Bottom line for Indian users
For Jio, Airtel and Vi, an existing compatible 4G SIM generally works in a 5G phone; you do not normally need to buy a separate 5G SIM. The decisive checks are the exact handset model, local 5G coverage, enabled network settings, current phone software and the operator’s eligibility rules for the plan or benefit you want. Use the operator app to confirm coverage and the current offer before changing SIMs or recharging.
