Does a 4K OLED Gaming Monitor Need HDMI 2.1?

Not always. HDMI 2.1 is the practical target if you want to connect a console or PC over HDMI and run 4K at 120Hz or higher. If you are happy with a lower refresh rate, or another input supports the mode you want, a 4K OLED monitor does not need HDMI 2.1 just because it is 4K or OLED. Check the exact monitor input, source device and feature combination—not just the words on the box.

Choose by the signal you want to use

The useful question is not whether HDMI 2.1 is a universal requirement for a 4K OLED display. It is whether a particular input can carry the resolution, refresh rate and features you want from your console or graphics card. OLED describes the panel technology; it does not specify which video signals the monitor accepts. Panel type and port capabilities are separate specifications, so the word “OLED” cannot tell you whether the monitor will accept 4K/120Hz over HDMI.

How you plan to use the monitor What to look for
PS5 or Xbox Series X at 4K/120Hz over HDMI HDMI 2.1 is the safe target. Confirm that the exact monitor supports 4K/120Hz over HDMI with your console, and check VRR and HDR support at that mode.
PC gaming at a high refresh rate Compare the graphics card’s outputs with the monitor’s HDMI and DisplayPort modes. The fastest supported mode may depend on which input you use.
Lower refresh rate, or a supported alternate connection HDMI 2.1 may not add a practical benefit. Verify that the chosen input supports your target resolution, refresh rate and desired features.

This is a configuration decision, not a blanket rule about all 4K OLED monitors. The cited product specifications show that manufacturers describe each model’s inputs and capabilities separately; they do not establish one compatibility result for every console, PC, monitor and connection.

Think of HDMI 2.1 as a useful clue about the kind of connection you may need, rather than a complete compatibility guarantee. Your setup has two ends: the source device must be able to output the desired signal, and the monitor must accept it on the input you use. A mismatch at either end can prevent you from using the target mode. Even if both devices list HDMI 2.1, confirm the exact resolution, refresh rate and features in their documentation.

For console gaming at 4K/120Hz, check the HDMI mode itself

If 4K/120Hz over HDMI is your goal, HDMI 2.1 is the sensible feature to seek. But the port label alone is not enough: confirm the exact monitor’s documented console mode, and whether VRR and HDR work in the same configuration. A specification for one HDMI input or one feature does not prove that every input supports the same combination.

Manufacturer examples illustrate why those details matter. ASUS lists the ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM as a 27-inch 4K, 240Hz QD-OLED monitor and advertises HDMI 2.1 VRR at 4K/120Hz for PS5 and Xbox Series X. MSI lists the MPG 321URXW QD-OLED with a 3840×2160 QD-OLED panel, 240Hz refresh rate, HDMI 2.1 at 48Gbps, 120Hz console support, VRR and ALLM. ASUS also lists two HDMI 2.1 ports on the ROG Strix OLED XG32UQDMS and advertises HDMI 2.1 VRR at 4K/120Hz for PS5 and Xbox Series X. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results; consult the current product documentation for the exact model and region.

Those examples also show why a headline refresh-rate number needs context. Both cited 240Hz monitors have high maximum refresh-rate specifications, but the console examples describe 120Hz support. Do not read a monitor’s maximum PC refresh rate as a promise that a console will use that rate, or that the same rate is available over every input. Use the console-specific compatibility notes and the mode table for the input you intend to connect.

For console buyers, the practical sequence is straightforward: first decide whether you want to play at 4K/120Hz; then check the monitor’s HDMI specifications for the console you own; finally verify VRR and HDR in that mode if those features matter to you. If a product page only says “HDMI 2.1” without explaining the supported mode, look for the manual or compatibility information rather than assuming the combination.

For PC gaming, compare every relevant input

A PC gamer should check both the graphics card’s output and the monitor’s supported modes on that input. A monitor may offer a high-refresh mode through DisplayPort, HDMI, or both; the maximum advertised refresh rate should not be assumed to work over every port.

For example, ASUS specifies DisplayPort 2.1a UHBR20 at 80Gbps for uncompressed 4K/240Hz on the PG27UCDM, while its HDMI console claim is 4K/120Hz. That is a model-specific example, not a rule for other monitors. Before choosing a port, look up the supported resolution and refresh rate, color-depth or HDR conditions, VRR compatibility, and any stated Display Stream Compression (DSC) requirement for the mode you want. Confirm that your graphics card supports the corresponding output.

Do not infer that every 4K/240Hz monitor needs HDMI 2.1, or that an HDMI 2.1 port guarantees the monitor’s top refresh rate over HDMI. The relevant evidence is the exact input-mode specification for the monitor and source device.

When checking a PC setup, separate the question “Can this port reach the refresh rate?” from “Can it reach that refresh rate with my preferred picture settings?” The monitor documentation may distinguish resolution and refresh-rate support from color depth, HDR, VRR or compression details. Those details matter if you want to use several features together. The available specifications do not provide a universal compatibility matrix for every graphics card and monitor, so consult the source and display manuals for your particular combination.

It is also worth checking the DisplayPort connection rather than treating HDMI as the only route to high refresh. The PG27UCDM is one example: ASUS specifies its DisplayPort 2.1a connection for uncompressed 4K/240Hz, while separately advertising HDMI console support at 4K/120Hz. That distinction is useful when comparing ports on a particular model, but it cannot be generalized to other monitors. Compare the actual stated capabilities, not the port names in isolation.

VRR is not the same thing as HDMI 2.1 bandwidth

HDMI bandwidth and variable refresh rate (VRR) support are related considerations, but the version label is not a reliable substitute for checking VRR compatibility. RTINGS’ monitor-input guidance says some monitors with HDMI 2.0 bandwidth support HDMI Forum VRR on PS5. It also notes that Xbox supports FreeSync. So the claim that every monitor needs HDMI 2.1 for VRR is too broad.

Check which VRR format the monitor supports and whether it works with your console or graphics card over the input you plan to use. HDMI Forum VRR and FreeSync are distinct compatibility details; a generic “VRR” label does not answer every source-and-monitor compatibility question. The monitor’s manual or compatibility documentation is the place to resolve model-specific cases.

In other words, do not use “has HDMI 2.1” and “supports VRR with my device” as interchangeable statements. A monitor may have a relevant VRR feature without the HDMI 2.1 bandwidth label, and a port-version label by itself does not document every VRR pairing. Look for the supported format and the listed source-device compatibility. If you are comparing monitors for a PS5, check for HDMI Forum VRR compatibility; if you are comparing for Xbox, check the documented VRR support, including FreeSync where applicable.

Also distinguish the existence of VRR support from the rest of the signal mode. Your question may be whether VRR works at a particular resolution and refresh rate, or whether it works alongside HDR. The specification should answer those conditions for the exact input. Do not assume that a statement about VRR at one mode settles what happens at every other mode.

How to compare monitor specifications without being misled

When you compare two 4K OLED gaming monitors, use the same checklist for both. Start with the input that matters to you, not the monitor’s most impressive headline number. A useful comparison should answer these questions:

  • What resolution and refresh rate does each input support? Look for the maximum mode over HDMI and DisplayPort separately, rather than relying on a single overall refresh-rate figure.
  • Does the advertised mode work with your source? Check console-specific support or the graphics card’s output capabilities, not just the monitor’s claims.
  • Which VRR format is supported? Look for HDMI Forum VRR, FreeSync or other stated support, and verify compatibility with your device.
  • Does HDR work at the target mode? Check whether the manufacturer documents HDR at the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use.
  • Are all HDMI ports equivalent? Count the inputs you need and check whether they have the same capabilities. For example, the ASUS XG32UQDMS specification lists two HDMI 2.1 ports, but that fact should not be assumed for other models.
  • What does the PC connection require? Check the DisplayPort version, documented bandwidth, and any stated DSC support or condition for the mode you want.

This approach helps prevent two common purchasing mistakes: paying extra for a port feature you will not use, and buying a display whose input does not support the mode you expected. The available product information does not establish current street prices or a universal price premium for HDMI 2.1, so price comparisons should be made against current listings. Nor does it establish one universally best monitor. The right choice depends on the source device, chosen input and target signal.

Use this checklist before you buy or connect

  1. Set your target mode. Write down the resolution and refresh rate you want, such as 4K/120Hz for a console or a particular high-refresh PC mode. Avoid shopping based only on a vague goal like “fast gaming.”
  2. Identify the connection. Decide whether you will use HDMI or DisplayPort, and check which outputs your console or graphics card provides. If you could use either port, compare both paths.
  3. Verify the exact monitor input. Read the model’s specifications or manual for the supported resolution and refresh rate on that specific port. Check whether all HDMI ports have the same capabilities.
  4. Check features at that mode. Confirm VRR format and source compatibility, and whether HDR is supported at the chosen resolution and refresh rate. If color depth or DSC is relevant to the stated mode, check those conditions too.
  5. Match both ends. Make sure the source device supports the mode and features as well as the monitor. If documentation does not establish a combination, do not assume it will work.
  6. Recheck model-specific notes. Product pages and manuals may describe different capabilities for different inputs. Use the documentation for the precise model and region you are buying rather than relying on a general statement about a product family.

When comparing two monitors, use the same checks for both: maximum resolution and refresh rate per input; console or graphics-card compatibility; VRR format; HDR behavior at the target mode; number of HDMI ports and whether they match; and, for PC use, DisplayPort version and documented bandwidth or DSC support. There is no universal winner based on the HDMI label alone.

When HDMI 2.1 is worth prioritizing

Prioritize HDMI 2.1 if your plan specifically depends on 4K/120Hz over HDMI, especially for a current console, and the monitor’s own specifications confirm the relevant console mode. It is also a sensible buying filter if you want to avoid narrowing your options around a lower HDMI mode. Still, treat it as a starting point for checking compatibility, not as a guarantee that VRR, HDR and your desired refresh rate all work together.

You may not need to prioritize it if your target refresh rate is lower, or if you plan to use another input that is documented to support the mode you want. In that situation, the more useful question is whether the whole setup supports your intended resolution, refresh rate and features. A 4K OLED monitor can be a valid choice without HDMI 2.1 for a use case that does not require what that input provides.

No universal cable recommendation follows from the monitor specifications discussed here. The right connection depends on the particular source, monitor and selected mode, and the evidence does not establish one cable specification for every setup. Check the device documentation for your exact combination rather than buying based on a generic claim.

Does a 4K OLED monitor need HDMI 2.1 for PS5 or Xbox Series X?

Not automatically. HDMI 2.1 is a sensible target for console gaming at 4K/120Hz over HDMI, but check the monitor’s documented console support, plus VRR and HDR behavior at that mode. The panel being 4K OLED does not determine its input capabilities.

Do I need HDMI 2.1 for VRR?

Not in every setup. RTINGS notes that some monitors with HDMI 2.0 bandwidth support HDMI Forum VRR on PS5, and Xbox supports FreeSync. Check the monitor’s VRR format and compatibility notes for your specific source and input.

Can a 4K/240Hz monitor run at 240Hz over HDMI?

Do not assume so from the maximum refresh-rate headline. Check the exact input-mode specifications for the monitor and your graphics card, including any stated color-depth, HDR or DSC conditions. ASUS, for example, specifies DisplayPort 2.1a at 80Gbps for uncompressed 4K/240Hz on the PG27UCDM, while its console HDMI claim is 4K/120Hz; this is a model-specific example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are all HDMI 2.1 ports on a monitor the same?

Check the exact model’s port list and specifications. Do not assume every input supports the same resolution, refresh rate or feature combination. ASUS lists two HDMI 2.1 ports on the ROG Strix OLED XG32UQDMS, but that specification should not be generalized to other monitors.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: A 4K OLED gaming monitor does not automatically need HDMI 2.1. Prioritize it when you want 4K/120Hz over HDMI, particularly from a current console, but confirm the exact input mode and VRR/HDR support. For PC gaming or lower-refresh use, compare HDMI and DisplayPort capabilities with your source device and target settings. The monitor’s documented compatibility—not “4K OLED” or the HDMI label alone—should decide.
