Does a 240Hz TV or Monitor Make a Difference for Xbox Series X|S?

No—not beyond what the Xbox can output. Xbox Series X|S supports output up to 120Hz, so a 240Hz display cannot show the console at 240Hz. A compatible 120Hz display can still improve the experience in games with modes that render above 60 frames per second, but choosing 120Hz in Xbox settings does not make every game run at 120fps.

What 240Hz means for Xbox Series X|S

Xbox lists Series X|S output at up to 120Hz. That is the console’s stated ceiling, regardless of whether the connected TV or monitor is rated for 120Hz, 144Hz, or 240Hz. The extra refresh capacity of a 240Hz panel is therefore unused by an Xbox source. Xbox’s console comparison lists up to 120 FPS, and its display setup guide says Series X|S supports up to 120Hz.

Refresh rate and frame rate are related but not interchangeable. Refresh rate is how often a screen can update; frame rate is how many frames a game renders each second. A game must offer a mode above 60fps for the console and display to use a higher refresh rate, and selecting 120Hz as the Xbox output does not guarantee that a game will render at 120fps throughout play. Xbox explains the distinction between refresh rate and frame rate.

When a high-refresh display can help

A 120Hz-capable display can make a difference over 60Hz when a game supports a higher-frame-rate mode and the full connection supports the chosen resolution and refresh rate. Xbox describes 4K at 120Hz over HDMI 2.1 as a Series X|S display use case in its monitor announcement. That is the useful high-refresh target for Xbox; a 240Hz rating does not add another console benefit.

Dell 24 240Hz Gaming Monitor - SE2426HG - 23.8-inch FHD (1920x1080) 240Hz Display, in-Plane Switching (IPS) Technology, AMD FreeSync™ Premium, TÜV 3-Star, 2X HDMI, DisplayPort 1.4, Tilt
  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
  • Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
  • Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

For an Xbox-only setup, compare displays based on their actual Xbox-compatible modes and overall picture and gaming features—not the largest refresh-rate number on the box.

What to compare when choosing a screen

  • 120Hz at the resolution you want over HDMI: Check the exact resolution-and-refresh combination supported by the screen’s HDMI input. A listing that advertises 240Hz may refer to DisplayPort, which Xbox cannot use for video.
  • VRR and ALLM: Xbox lists variable refresh rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) among its display features. Check whether the particular screen supports them over the input you plan to use.
  • HDR and image quality: Consider real-world picture quality alongside resolution and refresh rate. Xbox’s monitor guidance highlights HDR, 4K/120Hz, and VRR.
  • Input latency and gaming mode: Compare the screen’s gaming modes and latency information rather than assuming a higher refresh-rate label alone determines responsiveness.
  • Size, viewing distance, and price: Choose a screen that suits the room and budget; a 240Hz specification by itself does not establish better value for Xbox.

A 240Hz monitor may be a sensible choice if the same screen will also serve a PC that can use refresh rates above 120Hz. That advantage would come from the PC, not the Xbox.

Check compatibility before buying or troubleshooting

Display capability depends on the exact model, input, settings, and connection—not just the advertised maximum refresh rate. Xbox notes that some TVs enable advanced features only on selected HDMI ports, and that its most advanced features require HDMI 2.1. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the HDMI input and the precise resolution/refresh combination you intend to use.

  1. Connect to the appropriate HDMI port. For 4K/120Hz, confirm the selected TV or monitor port supports that mode. If troubleshooting, connect the Xbox directly to the display rather than through an AV receiver or other device.
  2. Use a suitable cable. Xbox recommends the included Ultra High Speed HDMI cable with Series X for HDMI 2.1 features. Series X includes one; replace an existing cable only if it does not support the required connection.
  3. Check what Xbox detects. On the console, open Settings → General → TV & display options → 4K TV details. This screen shows the capabilities detected for the connected setup.
  4. Select the refresh rate. In Settings → General → TV & display options, choose 120Hz only when the display, HDMI input, and connection support the selected resolution at that rate.
  5. If 120Hz is unavailable, check the display settings. Verify the HDMI port, the display’s enhanced or game mode, and support for the particular resolution. Then check 4K TV details again.

Scope of the answer

This guidance concerns Xbox Series X|S and the capabilities stated by Xbox. It does not establish the output capabilities of every older Xbox console or the performance modes of every game. Xbox’s 2021 monitor announcement described partner displays capable of 4K at 120Hz; those historical examples are not current product recommendations.
