How to estimate the extra electricity cost
Measure the PC and monitor together while they are doing the jobs they actually do during the day. Then convert the measured energy into units and use the tariff for your own domestic connection.

1. Measure the complete setup
Use a suitable plug-in electricity usage meter between the outlet and the equipment. Record consumption during YouTube playback, ordinary idle time, and sleep if those modes occur. An accumulated energy reading over a representative period is more useful than a single instantaneous watt reading, especially when the workload changes. Include the monitor if it remains powered on.

2. Convert watts or meter readings into units
One electricity billing unit commonly means one kilowatt-hour (kWh). If you have an average watt reading, calculate:
Energy (kWh) = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000

Monthly energy (kWh) = average watts × 0.72
This is a calculation, not an estimate of what a particular PC consumes. For example, insert the average watts measured for your complete setup; do not assume a wattage based on another person’s computer. If your meter reports kWh directly, use the accumulated reading for the period measured and scale it cautiously to the month.

Check your electricity bill for the utility or DISCOM, domestic consumer category, billing period, energy-charge slabs, and any subsidy or other adjustments. State and union-territory retail tariffs differ, and the final bill may include charges beyond energy use. State Electricity Regulatory Commissions set retail tariffs; State Governments may also provide subsidies. A rate from another state or city is not a reliable substitute for your own applicable schedule.

For a dated example of why the calculation is local, the Chhattisgarh State Electricity Regulatory Commission’s FY 2026-27 domestic schedule identifies telescopic energy charges and fixed charges, with fixed charges described as monthly minimum charges. This applies within that jurisdiction; it is not a national rate. See the CSERC tariff information and confirm the applicable order and billing rules with your utility.
For a simple estimate, multiply the additional kWh by the applicable marginal energy charge. The actual bill difference can vary with telescopic slabs, fixed charges, subsidy eligibility, electricity duty, and other adjustments. Where consumption crosses a slab, the relevant rate may not be the same for every additional unit.

What affects the result in a rented flat
- PC workload: Playback, idle use, and sleep are different operating modes; a streaming day may include a mix of them.

Ways to reduce power use without guessing
- Set the monitor to enter sleep when you do not need to watch it, if that will not interfere with your setup.
- Use the PC’s sleep or power-management settings during periods when streaming is not required.
