Usually, yes: a PC playing or encoding a 24/7 YouTube stream will generally draw more power than the same awake PC sitting idle—but the difference depends on the computer and what “idle” includes. There is no reliable universal wattage for that difference. Measure the same setup in both states to find its actual electricity use.
First, distinguish watching from broadcasting
Watching a YouTube livestream means the PC is playing video. Broadcasting means the PC is also running an encoder and sending video to YouTube. Those are different workloads, so a measurement for playback cannot stand in for a computer that is encoding a stream. YouTube supports encoder-based livestreaming and recommends stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube: YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
If you mean a creator’s 24/7 stream, specify whether the computer is encoding continuously. If you mean a viewer, measure video playback. In either case, compare against the same PC in a defined idle state—not against a sleeping or powered-off computer.
What published energy figures can—and cannot—tell you
The International Energy Agency estimated video streaming at about 0.08 kWh per hour in 2020. That broad estimate depends on the device, network connection and resolution; it is not a YouTube-live-only figure or the extra electricity used by one PC compared with its idle state. ENERGY STAR says a computer uses 11 times as much energy as a digital media player in its cited comparison, and that certified products that enable streaming use 25% less energy on average. These are comparisons across device categories and covered products, not measurements of one PC playing video versus that same PC sitting idle. ENERGY STAR also says certified computers use about 30–40% less energy than standard models through efficient components and better power management while idle; it estimates that enabling power management on a certified desktop can save an office or home office $15 per year. Measure the difference on your own PC
- Define idle. Use an awake, unused computer with its usual background services running. Do not label sleep or off as idle. Decide whether the monitor and peripherals are included, and keep that boundary the same for both measurements.
- Measure idle at the wall. A plug-in watt meter can measure the AC power draw of a desktop and anything connected through it. Use an approved meter and follow its instructions. - Measure the actual stream workload. Keep the same computer, display and peripherals connected. Play a representative YouTube stream at the resolution you normally use, or run the encoder if you are measuring a creator PC. Let the system settle, then record average watts over a representative period.
- Compare like with like. Subtract the idle average from the playback or encoding average to estimate the additional power in watts. For the whole-system draw, use the stream-state reading itself. Do not mix a PC-only reading with one that includes a monitor or other equipment.
- Convert watts to energy. Use
kWh = watts × hours ÷ 1,000. For example, if your measured stream-state average is 100 W, 24 hours at that draw is 2.4 kWh. This is an illustration of the calculation, not a typical PC measurement. - Estimate a longer always-on period. Multiply the measured average watts by 24 hours per day and the number of days, then divide by 1,000 for kWh. To estimate the extra energy over awake-idle, use the difference between the two measured wattages in the same calculation.
Repeat or extend the measurement if power fluctuates substantially. For a fair comparison, keep resolution, display configuration, peripherals, network conditions and measurement duration as consistent as practical. If the alternative is sleep or shutdown, measure those modes separately.
Why the answer varies
- Playback versus encoding: encoding adds work that a viewer’s playback measurement does not capture.
- Resolution and display setup: stream resolution and the number and configuration of displays can change the workload and what equipment the meter includes.
- Computer and background activity: hardware, software and ordinary background services affect measured draw.
- Measurement boundary: a wall reading for the PC alone is different from a reading that includes the monitor, network equipment or other peripherals.
- Idle mode: an awake idle PC, a sleeping PC and a powered-off PC are distinct comparison states. ENERGY STAR describes power management as a way to reduce computer energy use. ENERGY STAR: Computers
What YouTube analytics do not measure
