Yes—if you use YouTube’s encoder workflow, an encoder or hosted playout service must keep sending the video and audio feed for the live broadcast to continue. A person does not have to sit at the controls, and YouTube does not require a particular encoder or physical machine. But a scheduled stream or watch page alone cannot supply the media: something must transmit the feed to YouTube.
What “encoder running” means for a 24/7 stream
YouTube’s encoder setup works by adding the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room to an encoder, then starting the encoder. That outgoing feed is what puts the channel live. If the encoder or its hosted equivalent stops sending, the encoder-supplied live feed stops; YouTube’s setup guidance does not describe a scheduled page as a substitute for the source.
The encoder does not have to be a desktop program. The continuing source can be software running on a computer, a hardware encoder, or a hosted playout service. Those are implementation choices, not YouTube-certified 24/7 products. YouTube’s general setup guidance does not establish a separate exception or special requirement for 24/7 music broadcasts. Ways to keep the feed going
| Approach | What has to stay active | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo — cloud playout for YouTube | StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist and sends it to YouTube; your computer need not stay on. | One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; first day free with no card. Check the service’s terms and your rights to the media. |
| Software encoder on a computer | The computer, encoder software, media playback and network connection. | Local power loss, operating-system updates, software crashes or internet outages can interrupt the feed. You control the setup but must plan monitoring and recovery. |
| Hardware encoder | The encoder appliance and network connection, plus the device or source supplying its media. | Check the device’s supported protocol, codec and automation behavior. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not mandate or certify a specific model. |
| Another hosted or cloud playout service | The provider’s service generates and sends the feed; you configure the service and provide the media. | Verify current YouTube support, media handling, recovery behavior, rights responsibilities and pricing with that provider. “Cloud” alone does not establish reliability. |
For a local setup, the computer is only one part of the chain: playback, encoding, power and internet all need to remain available. A hosted service shifts those functions away from your home machine, but its specific recovery and availability depend on the provider and configuration.

Set up and operate an encoder stream
- Check eligibility. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Create the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder, webcam, or mobile device
- Configure the encoder. Copy the current stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Use supported transmission settings. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS, and video codecs including H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1. Use constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends that the interval not exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS where supported because it encrypts the encoder-to-YouTube connection. Consult YouTube’s current settings page for the bitrate and resolution appropriate to your chosen output rather than assuming one setting fits every quality. - Test before relying on it. Check the intended audio and video, monitor stream health, and confirm that the selected media plays continuously. Test the complete chain rather than only checking that the encoder reports a connection.
- Leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends keeping total upload use below available capacity, with 20% room. If you have a backup encoder, account for its traffic as well and test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network, then confirming playback switches to the backup. YouTube: Tips for live streaming
- Plan recording separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a continuous 24-hour stream will produce a complete replay, so arrange any recording or archive requirement independently. What happens if the encoder stops?
If the source stops transmitting, the encoder-supplied feed cannot continue. A person does not have to operate the encoder continuously, but unattended operation still needs a plan for failures such as a computer restart, software crash, lost power or network interruption. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing backup-encoder failover; automation in a particular encoder or hosted service is not a guarantee that every fault will recover.
