A YouTube livestream and its replay can both generate eligible Watch Page ad revenue, but actual earnings depend on the audience, ad delivery and replay viewing. To find out which earned more for a particular stream, compare its ad-only revenue during the live broadcast with its ad-only revenue over a defined period after it ends.
How ad earnings can accrue in each period
While the stream is live
When monetization is enabled, YouTube documents pre-roll and display ads for live streams. Mid-roll ads can be automatic or inserted manually; automatic mid-roll frequency can be set to low, medium or high. YouTube recommends automatic mode, while scheduled or manual choices may have lower earnings potential. These settings create opportunities for ads, not a promise that an ad will appear for every viewer.

YouTube may also limit interruptions for channel members, pause mid-rolls for viewers sending certain paid messages, or snooze them during highly engaging moments. As YouTube puts it, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Its ad systems decide which slots may receive ads based on factors including viewer experience, creator earnings and advertiser values. After the stream becomes a replay
An archived live stream can appear as a video on the channel, and eligible long-form or live-stream videos viewed on the Watch Page can earn ads and YouTube Premium revenue if the creator has accepted the Watch Page Monetization Module. Replay earnings depend on how many people watch afterward and whether ads actually serve; an archived view is not automatically a monetized playback. YouTube says creators can see revenue breakdowns for live streams and live replays in Analytics.

Archiving is not guaranteed for every broadcast: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Check YouTube’s archive guidance if the replay is missing.
What YouTube’s published mid-roll figure means
YouTube reports that creators who chose automatic live mid-roll ads saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour. The comparison described on YouTube’s page is between channels with automatic live mid-rolls on and channels without them, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. It is not a comparison of live earnings against replay earnings, and it does not predict an individual channel’s result. How to compare one stream fairly
- Use the same stream’s Analytics breakdown. Locate the live-stream and live-replay ad-revenue figures in YouTube Analytics, as described in YouTube’s guidance.
- Set comparable windows. Compare the broadcast period with a stated replay period, such as the first seven days after the stream ends. Seven days is an analysis choice, not a YouTube rule; use the same window when comparing other streams.
- Keep it ad-only. Use estimated ad revenue rather than total estimated revenue. Total revenue can include memberships, Premium and paid chat features, which answer a different question.
- Look beyond views. Alongside revenue, inspect views, estimated monetized playbacks and ad impressions. A view may have no ad because of settings, ad availability, geography, recent ad exposure, Premium status or other factors.
- Label any efficiency calculation. You can report ad revenue per hour or per 1,000 views, but name the denominator and keep total revenue visible too. YouTube’s RPM is revenue after revenue share per 1,000 views and includes revenue sources beyond ads; CPM is advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share. Neither is a substitute for comparing ad-only revenue directly. Definitions are in YouTube’s ad revenue analytics guide.
- Repeat the comparison. Compare multiple streams from the same channel where possible. Topic, stream duration, audience geography, season, ad settings and replay reach can all affect the result; let the channel’s own repeated data show how much they matter.
Monetization rules that affect the answer
To earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from long-form or live-stream videos, a creator must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. Turning ads on does not guarantee that they will run: YouTube applies its standard review process and advertiser-friendly requirements. Its monetization options explain the module.
YouTube documents a 55% share of net revenue from ads displayed or streamed on public videos on the content Watch Page for partners who accept Watch Page Ads under that module. That is a share of qualifying Watch Page ad revenue, not a rule that makes live and replay earnings equal. Keep Super Chat, Super Stickers, memberships and Premium distinct when the question is specifically about ads. They may contribute to reported revenue or RPM, but they are not ad revenue for this comparison.
