When can a livestream’s watch hours count?
The key conditions are the stream’s visibility and what happens to its replay. YouTube’s YPP eligibility guidance includes public long-form video watch time in qualified public watch hours and explicitly excludes livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD. The guidance does not promise that every livestream will qualify in every circumstance.
- Public stream and replay: Keep the broadcast public and, after it ends, check that its replay is converted to VOD and remains publicly available.
- Unlisted or deleted livestream: YouTube lists these among livestreams whose hours do not count toward the threshold.
- No VOD replay: If the livestream is not converted to VOD, its hours are excluded under YouTube’s guidance.

How many qualified hours are needed for YPP?
YouTube’s eligibility page, accessed in 2026, describes the standard route to Watch Page ads and YouTube Premium revenue as 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months. The alternate Shorts route is 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days; that is not a watch-hour route.

These figures describe YouTube’s current page guidance as accessed in 2026, not a promise of future requirements. The page announces YPP updates beginning February 1, 2027, so check the official eligibility page for changes before planning around a threshold.
Meeting a numeric threshold is not automatic acceptance. YouTube says eligible channels undergo a standard review for policy compliance, and other channel requirements apply.

Where should you check your progress?
Use the Earn area in YouTube Studio to check the qualified public watch hours used for YPP progress. Do not assume that the total watch time shown elsewhere in Analytics is the same metric: general analytics watch time may differ from qualified public watch hours.
- Confirm the livestream and its replay are public.
- After the broadcast, check that a replay is available as VOD; avoid deleting it or changing it to unlisted if you are relying on its hours.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Earn area and check the qualified public watch-hour progress shown there.
- Continue meeting the other YPP and policy requirements; reaching the threshold leads to review, not automatic approval.
Does streaming continuously create a special eligibility advantage?
YouTube’s cited eligibility guidance does not give 24/7 streams special treatment, nor does it say that a particular broadcast length, bitrate, or number of concurrent viewers creates a shortcut. Continuous streaming may produce viewing time, but the qualifying-hours rules still depend on the content and its status. YouTube also excludes watch hours from ad campaigns and Shorts views from the public watch-hour threshold.

Do qualified hours mean you are already earning money?
No. Eligibility and revenue activation are separate. YouTube says eligible partners must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module to earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue; its Watch Page description includes live streaming videos. Acceptance of the module and the applicable monetization requirements still matter. See YouTube’s Choose how you want to monetize.
Common problems and what to check
- The hour total does not rise as expected: Check the Earn area rather than relying on general Analytics watch time, and allow for the fact that the two figures may differ.
- The replay is missing: Check whether the broadcast converted to VOD. YouTube excludes livestreams that are not converted.
- The replay is unlisted or was deleted: YouTube lists those livestream cases as excluded from qualified hours. Keep the replay public if you are counting on its viewing time.
- You crossed the threshold but are not approved: Thresholds do not guarantee acceptance; YouTube reviews channels for policy compliance and other requirements.
- You expect an overnight change to the threshold: YouTube’s eligibility page announces updates beginning February 1, 2027. Check its current wording rather than applying a future change before it takes effect.
