Their caffeine and other stimulants can affect sleep, anxiety, heart rate and blood pressure. Families can reduce risk by checking serving sizes, counting caffeine from all sources and choosing water for ordinary hydration. A child drinking one does not mean serious harm is inevitable, but symptoms or individual health concerns warrant medical advice.
Are energy drinks safe for kids?
Pediatric guidance advises children and teens not to consume energy drinks. The CDC says the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that adolescents avoid energy drinks and consume no more than 100 mg of caffeine per day. That figure is a daily upper limit cited for adolescents—not a recommended amount, a guarantee of safety for every teen, or permission to get caffeine from energy drinks. The CDC says younger children are discouraged from consuming caffeine. CDC guidance on energy drinks
Energy drinks can contain substantial caffeine, sometimes alongside other stimulants. The Associated Press reported a range of 80 to 300 mg of caffeine per serving; that is a reported range, not a standard for every brand or can. Serving size and formulation differ, so the actual label matters. For comparison, the AP reported that an 8-ounce coffee typically has about 80 to 100 mg of caffeine. What effects can caffeine and stimulants have?
The CDC lists dehydration, anxiety and insomnia among possible dangers of energy drinks, as well as heart complications including irregular heartbeat and heart failure. Stimulants can raise blood pressure, heart rate and breathing rate. The AP report also describes agitation and seizures as possible harms. These are potential outcomes, not a prediction that a child will experience them after any particular exposure; the sources do not establish an individual child’s safe dose.

Children with existing conditions may need particular care. A pediatrician quoted by the AP said children with conditions such as high blood pressure may be more vulnerable. Ask your child’s clinician about their specific health history rather than applying a general caffeine number as a personal safety threshold.
Severe outcomes, including deaths, are rare, the AP reports, but serious reactions can occur. The story describes the 2017 death of Davis Cripe, who had consumed a Mountain Dew and a McDonald’s latte earlier that day before an arrhythmia following an energy drink; the coroner said he had no prior heart condition. This reported case illustrates why clinicians caution against stacking caffeine sources, but it does not show that ordinary consumption commonly causes death or predict what will happen to another child.

How much caffeine is too much for a teen?
The CDC’s summary of AAP advice says adolescents should stay below 100 mg of caffeine per day and avoid energy drinks. Treat the number as a limit in that guidance, not a target or a product-specific safety guarantee. Caffeine effects vary, and the sources do not offer a universal safe threshold for an individual child.
Count caffeine from the whole day, not just the energy drink. Coffee, tea, soda and other caffeinated products add to the total. Check both the package’s serving size and how many servings are in the container: a can may contain more than one labeled serving, so the amount in the full container can exceed the per-serving figure. The AAP parent guide notes that caffeine-related emergency-department visits nearly doubled among middle and high school students between 2017 and 2023, and that poison-control calls about young people reacting to energy drinks rose 24% in 2023. These are different measures and populations, not estimates of an individual child’s risk. HealthyChildren.org guide to energy drinks

Are sports drinks the same as energy drinks?
No. Energy drinks contain caffeine and may include other stimulants. Sports drinks are intended to help replace water and electrolytes lost through sweating and activity; they are not stimulants for energy or school performance. For most children during ordinary activity, water is the appropriate hydration choice. Sports drinks have a limited role during prolonged, vigorous exercise, not as an everyday replacement for water. The CDC and AAP distinguish the categories. CDC guidance on healthy drinks
That distinction is useful for parents, coaches and teachers: an energy drink is not a hydration product, even when its branding suggests athletic performance. Make water available and encourage young athletes to choose it for routine hydration.

What should I do if my child drinks an energy drink?
- Check what and how much they drank. Read the label for caffeine per serving, serving size and servings per container. Note any other caffeine they had that day, such as coffee, tea or soda.
- Ask how they feel. The guidance identifies effects such as anxiety, insomnia and heart-related complications, but it does not provide a complete symptom-triage protocol or a dose that predicts an outcome. If your child has symptoms or an existing health condition, contact their pediatrician for individualized advice. For an emergency, contact emergency services.
- Discuss the pattern with their pediatrician. Bring the product label and explain how often your child has energy drinks and other caffeinated beverages. A clinician can consider the child’s health and circumstances.
- Make the alternative practical. Keep water available at home, school and sports, and explain that energy drinks and sports drinks serve different purposes.
For schools and teams, clear messaging and access to water can reinforce the same distinction. The AP reports that the American Beverage Association says its members voluntarily disclose caffeine totals on labels, include advisories against use by children and do not sell or market energy drinks in K–12 schools. Those are industry statements reported by the AP, not independent verification of every product or school’s practice.
