Docker Security Best Practices for Your Linux VPS

Secure Docker on a Linux VPS by treating the daemon as a root-level control plane, then layering isolation, least privilege, network segmentation, supply-chain checks, and disciplined patching. Rootless Docker can reduce the consequences of a daemon or container compromise, but it is not a universal drop-in replacement: verify storage, networking, and privileged-port requirements before switching.

The practical goal is to make every compromise smaller. A web container should not control the Docker API, read another service’s volumes, reach private databases unnecessarily, or write to the host filesystem. The controls below are designed to work together rather than serve as a single “secure Docker” setting.

Start with the threat model: what Docker does and does not isolate

Docker uses Linux namespaces to separate process IDs, mounts, networking, users, and other kernel views. Control groups (cgroups) constrain and account for resource use. These are foundational boundaries, not a guarantee that a container is equivalent to a virtual machine. A kernel vulnerability, an over-privileged container, an exposed management API, or a malicious image can cross the boundary or cause damage without “breaking out” in the classic sense.

On a VPS, the host usually carries the provider agent, SSH, monitoring, backups, and sometimes unrelated applications. A Docker incident can therefore affect more than one container. A sensible design starts by deciding which assets may share a host and which require a separate VPS or a stronger isolation boundary.

  • Assume the host and daemon are high-value assets. Anyone who can administer the Docker daemon can generally create containers with host mounts, alter networking, and run code with host-level impact.
  • Assume an application container can be compromised. The container should have no Docker socket, no unnecessary Linux capabilities, no broad host mounts, and no route to services it does not need.
  • Assume images and dependencies can change. A previously trusted tag can point to a different build, and an unpatched package can turn a normal application bug into remote code execution.
  • Define recovery before deployment. Keep restorable backups, know which data is authoritative, and document how to rebuild a host without copying a compromised filesystem.

Protect the Docker daemon and socket first

Why Docker socket access is root-equivalent

The Unix socket at /var/run/docker.sock is an API to the daemon. A client that can issue unrestricted API requests can ask Docker to start a container with powerful settings, including host filesystem mounts. Docker’s own security guidance treats daemon control as a distinct attack surface because it can permit access to or modification of the host.

Do not mount the socket into application containers, CI jobs, monitoring tools, or third-party images unless you have explicitly accepted that those workloads can control the host. A read-only socket mount is not a safe substitute: the API itself is the authority, and clients commonly need only the ability to send requests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limit local users and groups

Membership in the docker group is effectively administrative access to the daemon. Keep that group limited to trusted operators, review it regularly, and remove accounts that no longer need it. Do not grant the group to a web-server account, an automation user shared with unrelated jobs, or a developer account used to run untrusted code.

Audit both group membership and socket permissions as part of host onboarding. If an operator needs Docker occasionally, prefer controlled elevation and an auditable workflow over permanent broad access.

Keep remote administration private

Leave the API on its Unix socket by default. If remote administration is required, use SSH forwarding or mutually authenticated TLS over a trusted management network. Never bind an unauthenticated daemon endpoint to a public interface. Place administrative access behind a VPN or management subnet, restrict it with the host firewall and provider-level controls, and monitor authentication and API activity.

Reduce the host attack surface

Use a dedicated VPS for Docker workloads when practical. Keep host services to the minimum required for operation, restrict SSH to known source networks or a VPN, disable password authentication where your access plan permits, and monitor login attempts. Patch the Linux distribution, kernel, Docker Engine, container runtime, and security tooling on a defined schedule. Subscribe to Docker’s security-announcement stream so urgent fixes are not discovered only during an incident.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose rootless or rootful Docker deliberately

Rootful Docker runs the daemon with host-root privileges. It offers the broadest compatibility, including common networking modes, storage drivers, and workloads that need privileged ports or kernel features. That privilege also increases the blast radius of a daemon compromise or a dangerous configuration.

Rootless Docker runs the daemon and containers as an unprivileged user. It reduces dependence on host root and can limit what a compromised daemon or container can do to the rest of the VPS. It does not eliminate application vulnerabilities, kernel vulnerabilities, weak file permissions, or network mistakes. Some applications and operational tools assume rootful behavior.

Decision axis Rootful Docker Rootless Docker
Daemon privilege Daemon has host-root authority; daemon access must be guarded like root access. Daemon operates in a user context, reducing direct host-root exposure.
Privileged ports Conventional binding to low-numbered ports is supported. Low ports and other privileged operations may require a different design or host-level forwarding; validate the exact workload.
Storage and networking Broadest driver and networking compatibility. Compatibility varies by filesystem, driver, and network setup; test persistent volumes, overlay behavior, and service discovery.
Isolation impact Still benefits from namespaces, cgroups, capabilities, seccomp, and AppArmor or SELinux, but daemon compromise has a larger blast radius. Adds a user boundary, but does not replace container-level controls or host hardening.
Operational burden Straightforward for many existing deployments; requires strict daemon and group governance. Requires validating backups, networking, storage, monitoring, and any operation that expects host-root access.

Use rootless mode when the application works with its networking and storage constraints, and document any exceptions. If a workload needs host networking, device access, privileged ports, or kernel-level operations, isolate it, minimize its capabilities, and consider whether it belongs on a separate VPS rather than weakening the whole host.

Build a trustworthy image supply chain

Start from maintained, minimal images

Select base images from trusted publishers with a clear maintenance history. A smaller image normally contains fewer packages and fewer potential vulnerabilities, but “small” is not a substitute for maintenance. Remove compilers, package caches, shells, and debugging tools from the final image when the application does not need them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use multi-stage builds: compile or package in a builder stage, then copy only the runtime artifacts into a clean final stage. Review every Dockerfile instruction for unnecessary files, broad permissions, and secrets that could remain in an image layer.

Pin and update images deliberately

Tags such as latest are mutable. For production reproducibility and confident rollback, pin the image by immutable digest and record how updates are approved. A digest pin should not become an excuse to run an old vulnerable build: schedule update reviews, rebuild when the base image or application dependencies change, and keep the previous known-good digest available for rollback.

Scan before deployment

Scan images and application dependencies in continuous integration and again before deployment. Treat critical findings as release blockers unless a documented risk decision explains why an exception is safe. Scan the exact image digest that will run, not only the source branch or a moving tag.

Keep secrets out of layers and ordinary environment values

Never put passwords, private keys, API tokens, or certificates in a Dockerfile, source repository, build argument, or copied configuration file. Deleting a file in a later layer does not remove it from earlier layers. Environment variables are also visible to processes and may be exposed through diagnostic output or metadata. Use the secret mechanism provided by your deployment platform or orchestrator, mount secrets only where needed, rotate them after accidental exposure, and ensure backups are protected to the same standard.

Run each container with the least privilege it needs

Use a non-root application identity

Set an explicit non-root USER in the image or Compose service. Choose a fixed UID/GID where feasible so volume permissions are predictable, and make only the required directories writable. A non-root process cannot prevent every container escape, but it removes a large class of filesystem and application mistakes.

Drop capabilities, then add narrowly

Start with all Linux capabilities dropped and add only a capability that the application demonstrably requires. For example, an ordinary HTTP service rarely needs network administration, raw packet access, module loading, or system-time changes. Avoid --privileged; it grants a broad set of powers and defeats the purpose of fine-grained capability control.

docker run --cap-drop=ALL --security-opt=no-new-privileges:true --read-only my-service@sha256:approved-digest

The example also prevents gaining new privileges and requests a read-only root filesystem. Add writable locations only as explicit, narrowly scoped volumes or temporary filesystems after testing.

Keep seccomp enabled

Docker’s default seccomp profile is intended as a sane default for running containers and disables around 44 system calls out of more than 300. Keep it unless testing proves a requirement for a reviewed custom profile. If you must customize it, begin from the default, document each added system call, test the profile in staging, and review it whenever the application or runtime changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use AppArmor or SELinux

Where the Linux distribution supports them, apply AppArmor or SELinux policies to constrain file access and operations beyond namespaces and capabilities. Start with the distribution’s container policy, run in enforcing mode after validation, and record exceptions. A policy that is silently disabled after an application error provides no security benefit.

Make the root filesystem read-only when practical

A read-only root filesystem limits persistence and tampering. Give the application a writable volume only for data it must retain, and use a temporary filesystem for short-lived state where appropriate. Ensure logs, uploads, caches, and runtime sockets have separate paths with the smallest possible permissions.

Expose fewer network paths

Publish only required ports

A port published to the VPS can become reachable from the Internet unless the host firewall or provider controls block it. Publish only user-facing services and explicitly required internal endpoints. Keep databases, queues, dashboards, and administration interfaces on private Docker networks.

Binding to a specific host address is safer than listening on every interface when the service is intended for one network. Replace the example address with the VPS interface you have designated for public traffic; do not expose management services simply because a container listens on a port.

Separate application tiers

Create distinct networks for front-end, application, and data tiers. Attach a reverse proxy to the front-end and application networks, attach application services to the application and data networks only when required, and keep databases off the front-end network. Make every allowed service-to-service path explicit and remove unused network attachments.

Bind administration to trusted networks

Bind admin panels and metrics endpoints to loopback, a VPN address, or a management subnet. Combine Docker network choices with host firewall rules and provider-level network controls; a container network declaration alone is not an Internet firewall.

Account for Engine 28 networking changes

Docker Engine 28 introduced networking hardening intended to avoid exposure without explicit user intent for affected Linux iptables setups. Do not rely on the version change to correct an ambiguous design: review published ports, forwarding rules, and provider firewalls after an Engine upgrade, especially on hosts that use custom iptables or nftables policies.

Protect volumes, backups, and host data

Mount only the host paths a service needs, and prefer named volumes or dedicated directories over broad mounts such as the entire host root. Never mount sensitive host paths into an untrusted container. Mark mounts read-only when the application only needs to read them.

Set least-privilege ownership and permissions on persistent data. Back up databases using a consistent application-aware method rather than copying a live directory blindly. Encrypt backups and, where the VPS provider supports it, use host-disk encryption for local images and volumes. Test restoration on an isolated host; a backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Apply a repeatable deployment procedure

  1. Inventory the workload. List public endpoints, internal dependencies, volumes, required ports, Linux capabilities, device access, scheduled jobs, and secrets. Challenge every item that is not essential.
  2. Select the isolation model. Choose rootless mode if the application passes storage, networking, and port tests. Otherwise use rootful Docker on a dedicated, hardened VPS and keep the exception specific to that workload.
  3. Prepare the host. Patch the distribution, kernel, Docker Engine, runtime, and security tooling. Restrict SSH, review the docker group, enable the host firewall, and remove unused services.
  4. Build the image. Use a maintained minimal base, multi-stage builds, an explicit non-root user, no embedded secrets, and no unnecessary packages. Record the resulting immutable digest.
  5. Scan and approve. Scan the image and dependencies in CI and before release. Resolve or document vulnerabilities, then approve the exact digest for deployment.
  6. Write a restrictive runtime definition. Drop all capabilities, prevent privilege escalation, keep the default seccomp profile, apply AppArmor or SELinux, use a read-only root filesystem where feasible, and define only required writable mounts.
  7. Design networks. Publish only user-facing ports, bind administrative interfaces narrowly, place services on separate front-end, application, and data networks, and verify host and provider firewall rules.
  8. Inject secrets safely. Use a secret store or protected runtime mounts. Confirm that secrets do not appear in image history, source control, logs, crash dumps, or ordinary environment listings.
  9. Test failure and recovery. Confirm the service still works as a non-root user, with dropped capabilities, the read-only filesystem, and the selected security profile. Test backup restoration and rollback to the previous approved digest.
  10. Monitor after release. Alert on unexpected container creation, daemon configuration changes, new published ports, privilege exceptions, image changes, authentication failures, and unusual outbound traffic.

Keep the Docker socket out of this service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Logging, monitoring, and incident response

Centralize container and daemon logs so an attacker cannot erase the only copy by deleting a local file. Monitor container creation and deletion, image pulls, daemon configuration, socket access, privilege changes, new mounts, published ports, and outbound connections. Retain enough host and provider logs to reconstruct who accessed the VPS and when.

If you suspect daemon or host compromise, treat the host as untrusted. Isolate it from the network while preserving evidence required by your incident process, revoke and rotate credentials that may have been exposed, inspect for unauthorized users and scheduled tasks, and rebuild from a known-good operating-system image when the trust boundary is uncertain. Restore only verified application data; do not copy unknown binaries or configuration wholesale from the affected host.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Mistake Why it is dangerous Safer correction
Mounting /var/run/docker.sock into a container Grants a control path to the daemon and can become a host-compromise route. Remove the mount; use a narrowly scoped API proxy only when its permissions and trust model are understood, or move the automation to a trusted administrator context.
Adding every user to the docker group Each member can control the daemon with root-level impact. Restrict membership and use audited elevation for occasional administration.
Using --privileged to fix an application error Replaces a small exception with broad device, capability, and kernel access. Identify the failing operation and add the smallest required capability, device, or policy exception.
Publishing every container port Internal databases and admin endpoints become reachable from untrusted networks. Publish only required ports and use private, tiered networks.
Running as root with a writable root filesystem Application compromise has more room to alter files and persist. Use a non-root UID, read-only root filesystem, and narrowly scoped writable volumes.
Putting secrets in a Dockerfile or image layer Layer history can preserve a secret after the file is deleted. Inject secrets at runtime, rotate exposed credentials, and rebuild the image.
Assuming a mutable tag is a rollback plan The tag may point to a different build when you need to recover. Record and deploy immutable digests, with a documented update and rollback process.
Disabling seccomp, AppArmor, or SELinux globally after one failure One workload’s compatibility issue removes protection from every container. Test in staging and create a narrowly scoped, reviewed exception.

How to decide whether your VPS design is acceptable

A small single-purpose VPS can be appropriate when the host is patched, SSH and the daemon are restricted, only required ports are public, and containers run with least privilege. As the number of tenants, trust domains, or sensitive datasets grows, separate VPSs and separate credentials reduce blast radius more reliably than an increasingly complex shared Docker host.

Before production, require affirmative answers to these checks:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Can an untrusted container reach the Docker socket, host root, or another service’s volume? It should not.
  • Which exact ports are public, and which firewall and provider rules enforce that decision?
  • What UID, capabilities, seccomp profile, and AppArmor or SELinux policy does each service use?
  • Which image digest is approved, when was it scanned, and how is it updated?
  • Where are secrets stored, who can retrieve them, and how are they rotated?
  • Can the team rebuild the VPS and restore application data without trusting the old host?
  • What alert identifies a new daemon client, container, mount, capability exception, or unexpected outbound connection?

Bottom line

Docker security on a Linux VPS is a layered operating practice. Protect the daemon and socket as root-equivalent interfaces, prefer rootless mode when the workload supports it, run applications as non-root with dropped capabilities and default seccomp, enforce AppArmor or SELinux and read-only filesystems where practical, expose only necessary network paths, and maintain a verifiable image and dependency supply chain. Test every restriction with the real application, document exceptions, and keep a rebuild-and-restore path ready for the day a container or the host is no longer trustworthy.
