Do You Really Need a Gaming Monitor? What Actually Matters

No—a dedicated gaming monitor is optional. It can make fast-moving games look smoother and feel more responsive, but whether that improvement matters depends on what you play, what your PC or console can output, and what your current display can do. A 60Hz display can still be perfectly usable for gaming.

What a gaming monitor can—and cannot—do

A gaming monitor is not a requirement for playing games. Its potential advantage is in the display experience: a higher refresh rate can show motion more smoothly, while compatible variable refresh rate (VRR) can help reduce tearing and stutter when frame rates fluctuate. These benefits depend on the monitor, source device, game, and connection working together.

A faster display cannot make a PC or console render more frames. It can only display the frames the system sends, subject to the monitor’s capabilities and the connection between them.

Refresh rate is not frame rate

Refresh rate is how many times per second a monitor can update its image, expressed in hertz (Hz). Frame rate is how many frames per second (fps) the PC or console renders and sends. They are related but not interchangeable: a 144Hz monitor does not guarantee 144 fps, and a game running at 60 fps does not supply 144 distinct frames per second for the display to show. RTINGS explains the distinction and its practical implications in its refresh-rate guide.

  • 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.

Higher refresh rates shorten the interval between possible display updates. RTINGS gives these frame-time examples in its September 15, 2026 update: 16.67 milliseconds at 60Hz, 8.33ms at 120Hz, 6.94ms at 144Hz, and 4.17ms at 240Hz. These are calculations based on refresh rate, not measurements of total system latency or guarantees that every player will notice a difference. The gains become smaller as refresh rate rises.

Who is most likely to benefit?

Fast-paced and competitive games

Players of shooters, racing games, and other fast-action titles are the clearest candidates for a higher-refresh display. Smoother motion can make movement easier to follow, and the display can feel more responsive. The practical benefit still depends on the game and whether the computer or console can deliver a higher frame rate.

Slower-paced games and everyday play

For turn-based games or titles with little rapid motion, a high refresh rate may matter less. If your current screen looks clear enough to you and its refresh rate suits the games you play, there is no universal reason to replace it.

Players who value visual detail

Some players may prefer a higher resolution and detailed image over the highest possible refresh rate. Resolution and refresh rate can involve trade-offs, and the right balance depends on the display, source device, game, and connection.

Refresh rate alone does not determine motion clarity

Pixel response time—the speed at which pixels change from one color to another—also affects how moving objects look. Slow transitions can leave blur; poorly handled transitions can create inverse ghosting. As a result, two monitors with the same advertised refresh rate can produce different motion quality. RTINGS describes these issues in its response-time test overview. Compare actual motion performance rather than treating the Hz rating as a complete measure of clarity.

When VRR helps

Variable refresh rate synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh behavior with the changing frame rate of a compatible source. This can reduce screen tearing and stutter when a game’s frame rate varies. VRR is not a standalone fix: check that both the monitor and PC or console support a compatible format, and that the connection and settings allow it. RTINGS explains refresh-rate and VRR testing in its monitor motion tests.

Check the whole setup before upgrading

The usable resolution and refresh rate depend on the full signal path, not just the monitor. Before buying, check the display, the PC or console, the game’s output options, and the cable or connection bandwidth together.

  • Source capability: Can your PC or console render the frame rates and resolutions you want in the games you play?
  • Game support: Does the game offer the output mode or frame-rate option you intend to use?
  • Monitor capability: Does the display support the target resolution and refresh rate, with motion performance you find acceptable?
  • Connection: Can the port and cable carry the selected resolution and refresh rate?
  • VRR: Do the source and display support a compatible VRR format and range?

For console buyers, platform and game support matter as much as the monitor. RTINGS’ article updated September 15, 2026 reports support for refresh rates up to 120Hz on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. That is a platform-level ceiling, not a promise that every game runs at 120 fps; verify the current console, game, and output mode before choosing a display.

How to decide whether to buy one

  1. Identify the shortfall. Is your current screen’s refresh rate or motion handling actually bothering you, or are you considering an upgrade only because “gaming monitor” sounds essential?
  2. Match the upgrade to your games. Fast action and competitive play make a higher refresh rate more relevant; slower games may not justify prioritizing it.
  3. Check attainable output. Confirm what your source and games can deliver at the resolution you want. Do not choose a monitor based only on its maximum Hz rating.
  4. Compare the complete display. Weigh refresh rate, response time, VRR compatibility, resolution, and connection bandwidth together. RTINGS’ gaming monitor guide outlines these selection criteria.
  5. Buy only if the trade-off suits you. If the likely improvement addresses a real limitation in your setup, a gaming monitor may be worthwhile. If not, keeping your current display is a reasonable choice.
