Do You Need to Preheat an Air Fryer? When and How to Do It

Sometimes—but not always. There is no universal preheat rule for every air fryer. The correct answer depends on your exact appliance, the cooking mode you selected, and the recipe or package directions. Check the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s support page first. Some models are designed to start with food in a cold chamber, while others use a short preheat to reach a target temperature before the timer begins.

For example, KitchenAid says preheating generally helps consistency but is not required for every mode; several Philips Airfryer models can be loaded immediately; Tefal gives a specific preheat sequence for its Fry Delight XL; and Haier’s No Preheat Air Fry oven mode explicitly starts with food in a cold oven. Those are model-specific instructions, not a cross-brand standard.

Why air fryers do not share one preheat rule

“Air fryer” describes several appliance designs rather than one standardized machine. A compact basket fryer, a countertop oven with an air-fry setting, and a full-size range with a dedicated air-fry mode can use different heating elements, fans, sensors, airflow paths, and control software. Their recipes may also assume different starting conditions.

That is why a temperature and time printed for one appliance cannot automatically be transferred to another. A basket model may heat its small cavity rapidly; an oven-style unit may use a larger chamber and a separate preheat cycle; a range mode may be engineered specifically to begin cold. The label on the front is not enough to determine the procedure.

KitchenAid’s general guidance puts the hierarchy clearly: “Not every air fryer requires preheating, so your air fryer’s manual will be your go-to source for finding out when and how to preheat.” Use that instruction hierarchy rather than relying on a generic tip.

The fastest way to decide

Use this sequence whenever you start a recipe:

  1. Identify the appliance family and model. Confirm whether you are using a basket air fryer, an air-fryer toaster oven, or a range/oven air-fry mode. Do not assume instructions for one family apply to another.
  2. Check the selected mode. Preheat behavior can change between Air Fry, Bake, Roast, Dehydrate, Reheat, Toast, Bagel, Keep Warm, and other settings.
  3. Read the recipe’s starting instruction. If it says “place in a cold oven” or “preheat to” a particular temperature, follow that direction unless your manual gives a safety-related override.
  4. Follow the manual’s control sequence and ready signal. Some products use a tone, a heating-indicator light, or a displayed temperature. A running fan is not necessarily proof that the chamber has reached the target temperature.
  5. Only then decide whether to load the food. If the manual says no preheat, put the food in at the beginning. If it calls for preheat, wait for the specified signal before starting the cook.

If the manual and recipe appear to conflict, prioritize the appliance manual for operation and safety, then adjust the recipe’s time or temperature only within the ranges the manufacturer allows. Keep a note of the model and mode; that prevents accidentally applying a setting from a different appliance later.

What preheating changes

Preheating brings the cooking chamber and its heating surfaces toward the selected temperature before the food is introduced. Starting in a hot chamber can make the first part of cooking more predictable when a recipe was written for that condition. KitchenAid describes preheating as generally helpful for consistent results, while also stating that it is unnecessary for some modes.

Without preheating, the food begins cooking while the appliance is still warming. The appliance’s displayed time may include that warm-up period, or the recipe may have been written to account for it. A cold-start design is not an error: it is a deliberate operating method in some products.

No broadly applicable independent statistic establishes a universal percentage improvement in crispness, speed, or energy use from preheating. The documented figures below are product instructions, not cross-model performance measurements. Treat preheating as a way to match the conditions assumed by a specific manual or recipe, not as a guaranteed upgrade for every food.

When preheating is usually called for

A recipe explicitly says to preheat

Use the recipe’s stated temperature and the appliance’s documented preheat process. This is especially important for foods where the initial heat affects browning or setting, such as a breaded coating or a baked item. Do not extend the preheat time simply because another appliance uses a longer cycle.

The manual makes preheat part of the mode

Some oven-style products automatically add a preheat stage after you choose a mode and temperature. Wait for the ready tone or other indicator before opening the door and loading food, unless the manual says loading during the warm-up stage is acceptable.

You are using an oven-style appliance with a large chamber

A larger cavity can have a longer warm-up than a small basket. If the manufacturer provides a preheat stage, using it helps you start from the conditions used to establish the appliance’s cooking tables. The exact duration remains model-specific.

When skipping preheat is correct

The manual says the model can be loaded immediately

Philips support guidance for listed Airfryer models says food can be loaded immediately without preheating. That direction applies to the covered models; it is not a blanket statement about every Philips appliance or every air fryer.

The selected mode has no automatic preheat

On the KitchenAid countertop oven covered by its product-help page, Dehydrate, Keep Warm, Reheat, Toast, and Bagel are listed as modes without automatic preheat. The same product can behave differently in another mode, so select the mode before deciding.

The appliance is designed for a cold start

Haier’s No Preheat Air Fry oven mode instructs users to put food directly into a cold oven and start cooking. That is an intentional feature of that range/oven mode, not a direction for Haier products generally or for countertop basket fryers.

KitchenAid countertop oven, Air Fry mode Preheat is generally useful when the mode calls for it; not every mode preheats Select mode and settings, press Start, wait for the tone at target temperature; press Start again to skip Product-help instructions are mode- and model-specific
Tefal Fry Delight XL FX1050SA Use the documented short preheat Set the timer to slightly more than three minutes; wait for the heating indicator to switch off, then add food Procedure comes from this model’s manual/support material
Haier range with No Preheat Air Fry technology No preheat; begin with food in a cold oven Place food in the cold oven and start the Air Fry mode Applies to the named No Preheat Air Fry oven mode
Philips Air Cooker support guidance Some roast/bake instructions use a fixed preheat timer Five-minute preheat timer; a recently heated appliance may allow you to skip it This is a separate Air Cooker family, not a general Airfryer rule

KitchenAid countertop oven example

  1. Choose the Air Fry mode on the covered countertop oven.
  2. Set the temperature and cooking time required by your recipe.
  3. Press Start to begin the programmed preheat.
  4. Wait for the tone indicating that the target temperature has been reached.
  5. Load the food and continue the cooking cycle according to the appliance’s instructions.
  6. To bypass the preheat on this product, press Start a second time. Do this only when a cold start is appropriate for your recipe and mode.

KitchenAid’s help page identifies several exceptions—Dehydrate, Keep Warm, Reheat, Toast, and Bagel—that do not use automatic preheat on the covered product. The absence of automatic preheat does not mean every food should be cooked identically; use the mode’s recipe guidance.

Tefal Fry Delight XL example

  1. Set the Fry Delight XL FX1050SA timer to slightly more than three minutes.
  2. Let the appliance run until the heating indicator switches off.
  3. Add the food after that indicator change.
  4. Continue with the recipe’s stated cooking time and temperature.

“Slightly more than three minutes” is the documented instruction for this model. It is not a universal timer setting for other Tefal products or other air fryers.

Philips Air Cooker example

Philips support material for the separate Air Cooker family describes a fixed five-minute preheat timer for certain roast and bake guidance. If the appliance has been heated recently, the instructions may allow the preheat to be skipped. Confirm that your appliance is an Air Cooker covered by that support page; do not transfer this five-minute figure to a Philips Airfryer or another brand.

Haier No Preheat Air Fry oven example

  1. Leave the oven cold; do not run a separate preheat cycle.
  2. Place the food in the oven as directed for the Air Fry mode.
  3. Start the mode using the temperature and time specified by the product instructions.
  4. When adapting package directions, use the conventional-oven temperature and cooking time without adding a preheat period.

Haier cautions that a countertop air-fryer recipe may require longer cooking or a slightly higher temperature in this oven mode. It also notes that subsequent batches may cook faster, so check food rather than assuming every batch needs the first batch’s full time.

Should you preheat between batches?

Do not assume that every batch needs a new preheat. One Philips user manual says a second batch prepared within 30 minutes does not need another preheat. That 30-minute interval belongs to the cited manual and should not be generalized to other models.

For any appliance, use the manufacturer’s recently-heated guidance if available. If the chamber has been open for a long time, the appliance has cooled substantially, or the manual calls for a fresh cycle, follow that instruction. Avoid inserting food while a product’s heating element or indicator is in an undocumented state.

How to adapt package directions safely

Package instructions often distinguish between a conventional oven and a countertop air fryer. First determine which appliance mode you are using. Haier’s No Preheat Air Fry guidance says to use the conventional-oven package temperature and cooking time, but to omit the preheat time because the food starts in a cold oven and the mode is designed for that process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That same guidance warns that a recipe written for a countertop air fryer may need longer cooking or a slightly higher temperature in the Haier oven mode. Subsequent batches may cook faster. These differences are reasons to monitor the food and verify that it has reached a safe, fully cooked condition rather than relying on a copied time.

  • Do not add an unlisted preheat period to a no-preheat oven mode.
  • Do not subtract a preheat period from a recipe that explicitly requires a hot chamber.
  • Do not transfer a basket-fryer temperature directly to an oven-style air-fry mode without checking the manual.
  • For meat, poultry, fish, or other foods where doneness matters, use the appliance’s guidance and an appropriate food-safety check rather than appearance alone.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using another model’s timer

A three-minute Tefal procedure, a five-minute Philips Air Cooker timer, and a KitchenAid tone-based cycle are different instructions. Correction: search the exact model number in the manual or official support page and follow its signal.

Assuming every mode preheats

Some KitchenAid modes listed above do not use automatic preheat, and Haier’s named mode starts cold. Correction: verify the mode before pressing Start and read the mode-specific notes.

Loading food before the ready signal

If a recipe assumes a hot chamber, opening the appliance early can change the starting condition. Correction: wait for the tone or indicator specified by the manufacturer, unless the manual explicitly says to load during preheat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adding preheat time to a no-preheat recipe

This can overcook the exterior or make the timing inconsistent. Correction: follow the cold-start instruction and begin the stated cook cycle with the food already inside.

Repeating a first-batch assumption

A recently heated chamber can cook a later batch differently. Correction: follow the model’s between-batch rule, allow for faster cooking when the manufacturer warns about it, and inspect the food earlier when appropriate.

Treating a support article as universal

Manufacturer help pages usually identify the products they cover. Correction: confirm the exact appliance family, model, region, and mode before applying a statement.

A practical decision table

Your situation What to do Why
Manual says “preheat” Run the documented cycle and wait for its ready signal The recipe and appliance were designed for a hot start
Manual says “no preheat” or “cold oven” Load food first, then start the mode The product is designed to include warm-up in the cooking process
Mode has no automatic preheat Follow the mode-specific recipe and start procedure Preheat behavior can vary within one appliance
Recipe and manual are silent Use the manufacturer’s model support guidance; avoid borrowing another model’s timing No cross-brand rule establishes the correct procedure
Second batch soon after the first Use the manual’s stated interval or recently-heated rule Some products do not need another preheat, but the interval is model-specific
Package gives conventional-oven directions for a no-preheat oven mode Use the package temperature and time without adding preheat time, if the oven manufacturer says so The mode is designed to start cold

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Official instructions establish procedures for particular products, not a universal performance law. The documented numbers are five minutes for certain Philips Air Cooker guidance, slightly more than three minutes for the Tefal Fry Delight XL procedure, and a 30-minute window in one Philips manual for a subsequent batch. None is a general statistic for all air fryers.

Because no broadly applicable independent comparative test quantifies the effect across models, be cautious with claims that preheating always saves time, always makes food crispier, or always uses more electricity. Your appliance’s heating cycle, cavity size, load, food thickness, and selected mode all affect the result. Match the documented starting condition first, then adjust only when your own recipe and appliance instructions allow it.

Bottom line for everyday cooking

Check the exact manual and recipe before deciding. Preheat when the appliance or mode calls for it, using the documented timer, tone, or indicator. Skip preheat when the instructions specify an immediate load or a cold start. Do not transfer a setting from another brand or appliance family, and treat between-batch intervals as model-specific. This approach answers the question without buying an accessory or changing appliances: the documentation for the air fryer you already own is the controlling source.
