The official campaign preview places the invasion in Kalona, where Marcus, Dom, and two new squad members try to survive and understand the unfamiliar enemy (Xbox Wire campaign preview). Because the game starts with the invasion rather than continuing a later-series cliffhanger, its basic historical premise does not depend on knowing what happens in the earlier-released games. That is a reasonable reading of the setup, but Xbox has not explicitly guaranteed that no prior knowledge will ever be useful.
