Do You Need to Play the Original Before Its Sequel? A Practical Guide

Not always. A sequel can be designed as a welcoming starting point, or it can continue the original so directly that playing in order is the best way to understand the plot and characters. Check the sequel’s continuity, official newcomer guidance, recap options and your tolerance for spoilers before deciding.

The question has a conditional answer

The word “sequel” describes release order, not how much prior knowledge a game expects. Some follow-ups tell a complete story with a new protagonist or a separate journey. Others begin immediately after the original’s ending, assume you know the cast and carry unresolved mysteries into the next chapter.

Playing the original is therefore optional for a newcomer-friendly sequel, but strongly advisable for a direct continuation. Even when it is not required for comprehension, the first game can give callbacks, relationships and character decisions more emotional weight. Starting with the newer release can also spoil major developments from the earlier one.

There is no universal rule based on numbering alone. The useful question is: what does this particular sequel assume, and what do you want from the experience?

Six checks that reveal whether the original is necessary

1. Read the developer’s own guidance

Look first for an official FAQ, introductory guide or interview. Developers know whether the sequel was structured for newcomers and can distinguish “you can follow the plot” from “returning players will notice extra connections.” Treat a clear statement as stronger evidence than a retailer description or a forum comment.

For example, Supergiant Games’ Hades II FAQ, updated April 14, 2026, says: “You don’t need to know anything about the original game or Greek myth to enjoy Hades II.” The same FAQ says players familiar with Hades will find connections, making the first game enriching rather than mandatory.

Remedy creative director Mikael Kasurinen gave similar guidance for CONTROL Resonant in an Xbox Wire interview published May 8, 2026: “And it’s easier for new players to jump in: there’s no pressure to play the first Control before Resonant.” He described the games as their own experiences with distinct journeys in a shared world.

2. Identify the continuity type

A sequel is usually easier to start with when it has a new central character, a different location or a self-contained conflict. It is more dependent on the original when it opens directly after the previous ending, revolves around the same relationships or makes the earlier game’s unresolved mysteries its main hook.

Think of continuity as a spectrum:

  • Standalone entry: The central problem is introduced and resolved within the sequel. Earlier events may be referenced but are not needed.
  • Newcomer-friendly continuation: The sequel advances the same universe and may mention prior events, while supplying enough context to follow the new story.
  • Direct next chapter: The plot, cast and unanswered questions carry forward with little narrative reset. Release or story order is the safer choice.

3. Check who the protagonist is

A new lead can provide an in-world reason to explain the setting again. A returning protagonist usually brings established motivations, friendships and consequences that the sequel may not repeat in full. If a character’s emotional arc is the main attraction, beginning with the first game preserves its intended progression.

4. Look for an official recap

A title may include a story summary, an in-game timeline or a reference section. These tools are useful when you played the original years ago or cannot access it. They compress events, however, and may not recreate the original’s gradual character development, discoveries or surprises. Confirm that a recap exists for the specific edition before treating it as your substitute.

5. Measure spoiler exposure

Sequel openings often assume the audience already knows the outcome of the first game. Even a newcomer-friendly follow-up can reveal identities, endings or relationship changes simply by presenting the world after those events. If preserving the original’s surprises matters, play the earlier title first or at least avoid reading detailed sequel coverage.

6. Match the order to your priority

Choose the sequel first when your priority is the newest mechanics, you have limited time, and the developer explicitly supports newcomers. Choose the original first when you want the complete character arc, care about lore connections or dislike spoilers. If the games are a tightly linked story, order matters more than convenience.

A practical decision process

  1. Find an authoritative statement. Search the developer or publisher’s support pages and interviews for phrases such as “standalone,” “new players,” “direct sequel” or “prior knowledge.” Record the date because guidance can change as a game’s story mode or editions are updated.
  2. Read a spoiler-light description of the sequel. Determine whether it introduces a new conflict or immediately resumes an unresolved one. Avoid plot summaries that disclose the original’s ending while you are making the decision.
  3. Map the returning elements. Note whether the same protagonist, companions, locations and mysteries are central. The more of these carry over, the stronger the case for playing in order.
  4. Verify catch-up tools. Check the title’s main menu, accessibility or extras sections for a recap. A video, timeline and written summary serve different needs; do not assume one exists because another sequel included one.
  5. Decide how much context you need. For mechanics-first play, start with the sequel if it is welcoming. For narrative-first play, begin with the original whenever the plot is tightly connected.
  6. Protect the first game from spoilers. If you start with the sequel, avoid wikis, achievement lists and character searches until you decide whether you will return to the original.

What current examples show

These cases illustrate why a sequel label is not enough. They are not a universal ranking; each reflects the guidance available for that particular series.

Series Continuity and newcomer guidance What playing the original adds Evidence
Hades → Hades II Supergiant says no knowledge of the first game or Greek mythology is needed to enjoy the sequel. Players who know the original can notice additional connections. Supergiant Games FAQ, updated April 14, 2026
Control → CONTROL Resonant Remedy says there is no pressure to play the first game; each title is its own experience in a shared world. The earlier journey can provide broader shared-world context. Xbox Wire interview, May 8, 2026
Kingdom Come: Deliverance → Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 A Windows Central guide reports that the sequel welcomes newcomers and references earlier events. The first game supplies more context about Henry, his relationships and his journey. Windows Central, February 3, 2025
Alan Wake → Alan Wake 2 Remedy’s FAQ calls the sequel a standalone experience that newcomers can enjoy without previous knowledge. Returning players can discover extra lore and connections. Remedy FAQ, updated October 22, 2024
inFAMOUS 1 and 2 → inFAMOUS Second Son A March 11, 2014 PlayStation Blog Q&A search result quotes Sucker Punch co-founder Brian Fleming saying Second Son stands on its own. Earlier details add richness but are not required for the plot, according to the quoted answer. PlayStation Blog search-result page
Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter → 2nd Chapter A third-party G2A guide describes the second game as a direct continuation with unresolved mysteries and reports an official recommendation to finish the first story. The first chapter establishes the plot and relationships that the next chapter continues. G2A News guide; verify current advice with Falcom before relying on it as an official rule.

The strongest pattern is that “standalone” does not mean “nothing is gained from the original.” Both Hades II and Alan Wake 2 explicitly welcome newcomers while promising extra connections for returning players. By contrast, a continuation built around unresolved mysteries, such as the description of Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, gives story order much greater importance.

Choose an order based on the experience you want

If you want the newest gameplay immediately

Start with the sequel when official guidance says newcomers are supported and the central story is self-contained. Use any recap before beginning, then return to the original only if the sequel makes you curious about its references. This avoids spending time on an older release that you may not finish.

If you care most about character development

Play in release or story order when the same lead and supporting cast return. Earlier decisions can establish why characters trust, resent or depend on one another. A summary may tell you what happened without giving those relationships their original buildup.

If you are sensitive to spoilers

Play the original first unless the sequel is explicitly an anthology-style entry with no meaningful carryover. Marketing that says “standalone” addresses comprehension, not necessarily spoiler safety.

If the original is unavailable or very long

Use the most complete official recap you can find and read a spoiler-light overview of the sequel’s premise. Do not rely on a universal playtime estimate: the available guidance does not establish comparable hours across franchises, and optional side content can change the commitment substantially.

If you already played the original years ago

A recap is usually the efficient route. Revisit the original only when you want its atmosphere, mechanics or emotional scenes again, not because the sequel’s label automatically requires it.

How to handle recaps without losing the story

A recap works best as a memory aid, not as a replacement for every scene. Before using one, check three things:

  • Source: Is it supplied in the game or by the developer, rather than an unsourced fan summary?
  • Spoiler scope: Does it reveal only the original, or does it also disclose twists from the sequel?

If you are undecided, watch or read only the recap’s opening context first. You can then stop and play the original if the setup interests you, instead of exposing yourself to every major reveal.

Common mistakes when deciding

Assuming every numbered sequel is the next half of one story

Numbering can signal chronology without indicating how much exposition the new game provides. Confirm the continuity rather than inferring it from the title.

Treating “standalone” as a promise of identical understanding

Standalone usually means a newcomer can follow the main experience. It does not promise that a new player will recognize every reference or feel the same history between returning characters.

Using a fan recommendation as an official requirement

Community advice can describe a personal preference. Separate it from a developer statement, especially when a source is a search-result excerpt or a third-party guide.

Ignoring the cost of spoilers

Starting with the sequel may save time but permanently reveal parts of the original. Decide whether that trade-off is acceptable before opening a wiki or watching a story recap.

Buying the original before checking access

Confirm that the original is available on your platform and in a compatible edition. If it is not, an official recap may be the practical choice; do not let an ideal order prevent you from playing a sequel designed for newcomers.

A quick checklist

  • Has the developer explicitly welcomed newcomers?
  • Does the sequel introduce a new protagonist or a separate central conflict?
  • Are the original’s mysteries and relationships still unresolved?
  • Is there an official recap, timeline or story summary?
  • Would starting with the sequel spoil the original’s ending?
  • Do you value the full character arc more than reaching the newest release quickly?
  • Can you access the original on your platform without an unreasonable cost or time commitment?

If the first four answers point toward independence and the last three do not raise concerns, starting with the sequel is reasonable. If the sequel immediately continues unresolved plotlines and you care about narrative continuity, play the original first.
