However, it is a direct continuation of Caroline Walker’s story, so playing the first game gives you more context, clearer emotional stakes and fewer lore gaps. If you want the fastest bridge, use the official story recap published on the game’s Steam community page.
The practical answer
Tormented Souls 2 is not an unrelated follow-up that simply reuses the name. Steam presents it as the sequel in which Caroline Walker returns, and the official Steam community hub published a recap of the first game for players who needed to remember earlier events. That makes the play order flexible rather than mandatory: the first game is recommended for continuity, but it is not a prerequisite for understanding the sequel’s basic premise.

A Steam review reaches the same distinction in slightly different words: you do not necessarily need to have played the first game to follow what is happening, although you will have more context if you have. Meristation’s review describes the sequel as taking place months after the first game and says it can be enjoyed independently. Those two points answer the question most new players have: you may begin with the sequel, but you are choosing a lighter introduction to its established story.

Caroline Walker is the returning central character
The continuity is primarily character- and story-based. Caroline Walker returns, so the sequel assumes that her journey began before the opening of Tormented Souls 2. You are not starting with an entirely new protagonist whose history is explained from zero. Earlier events therefore have narrative value even when the sequel remains playable on its own.

- Caroline Walker Returns! After the events of Wildberger Hospital, Caroline yearns for a normal life with her younger sister, Anna. However, fate has other plans. As Anna falls victim to a mysterious affliction, coughing blood and experiencing blackened eyes and moments of unconsciousness, conventional remedies prove futile. In a desperate bid to save her sister, Caroline must turn to the supernatural.
- An All New Setting Filled With Unspeakable Horrors… Welcome to Puerto Miller, a remote Southern American town with a chilling past. Founded ages ago by the reclusive Ismuit tribe—a small religious group that shunned the outside world—the town conceals unspeakable horrors beneath its ancient exterior.
- Combat Terrifying Creatures With Makeshift Weapons Face pulse-pounding combat as you confront monstrous creatures using a range of ingenious makeshift weapons. Every corner may hide an enemy, so resource management is key to survival.
- Solve Mind-Bending Environmental-Based Puzzles Utilise logic and reasoning to forge connections between items found in the environment and the intricately designed puzzles. Creatively combine resources to unlock twisted enigmas and delve deeper into the dark mysteries that shroud your path.
The story begins after the first game
Meristation places the sequel months after the events of the original. That time gap helps explain why a newcomer can enter the second game without seeing every preceding scene: the new adventure is not presented as a scene-by-scene replay of the first. At the same time, a continuation set after a previous crisis naturally carries consequences, relationships and unresolved information forward.
The official recap confirms that earlier events matter
The Steam community page released a recap specifically for players who had completed the first game and wanted to refresh their memory. For a new player, that recap is useful evidence of what the sequel expects you to know: enough of the original story is relevant to justify a refresher, but the publisher also provides a way to catch up without replaying the entire first title.
What you may miss by skipping the first game
Story context
The largest cost is not basic comprehension; it is context. You can understand that Caroline is facing a new chapter, but references to her earlier experiences may carry less weight if you have not seen them. A PlayStation Store review recommends playing the first game to avoid missing story material, and other review coverage warns that newcomers may have difficulty getting fully up to speed with the sequel’s lore. These are reasons to prefer the original when narrative completeness matters to you.

Direct sequels often rely on the audience remembering what a protagonist endured and why returning characters or places matter. The available coverage does not establish that every plot point in Tormented Souls 2 is inaccessible without the original; it does establish that prior play adds context. In practical terms, skipping the first game can leave you recognizing the immediate objective while having a thinner understanding of why Caroline’s situation is significant.

- Something evil lurks at winterlake - while investigating the disappearance of Twin girls at winterlake - something terrible happens to caroline Walker.
- A return to classic survival horror - tormented Souls is a modern take on the fixed-perspective adventure
- Fiendish puzzles - scavenge essential resources and tools, decipher clues from long-forgotten Journal, and combine it all to solve fiendish puzzles and unravel the secrets of the mansion-turned-hospital.
- Deadly combat - dark forces and unspeakable horrors will do everything in their power to stop caroline getting to the truth. Use anything and everything that you can find to fight back against the evils that wait in the darkness.
- Can caroline Walker Escape with the truth? Will she Escape with her life?
Discoveries from the first game
Playing the recap rather than the original necessarily changes how information is delivered. A recap tells you outcomes and major facts, while the first game lets you encounter those developments in their original order. If you are sensitive to spoilers, a recap may reveal the important beats of the first game before you decide whether to play it. If you intend to play both eventually, starting with the original protects that first-game experience.
When starting with Tormented Souls 2 makes sense
You care more about the new gameplay experience than complete backstory
Players whose main priority is reaching the sequel can begin there. Independent playability is explicitly supported by Meristation’s review, and a Steam review says the sequel can be followed without having played the original. You should still expect the game to contain established lore, but you do not have to treat the first title as a formal entry requirement.
You have access to the official recap
The recap is the best compromise for someone who wants to start immediately while avoiding the most obvious continuity gap. Read or watch it before beginning the sequel, then keep the first game as an optional earlier chapter rather than stopping your play session to investigate every reference. The recap cannot reproduce the full experience, but it gives you a faster orientation than entering completely cold.

You are testing whether the series suits you
If you are unsure whether the series is for you, starting with the newer game limits your initial commitment to one title. Should its atmosphere and story appeal to you, you can return to the original for additional context. This order sacrifices the original’s intended buildup, so it is better for exploratory players than for readers who want the most coherent chronology.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Play the first game, then the sequel | Fullest available continuity for Caroline Walker’s story | Two complete games; exact playtime is not stated in the available coverage | Lowest risk of spoiling the first game for yourself | Story-first players and anyone who wants every earlier event in its original presentation |
| Read the official recap, then play the sequel | 主要 story facts and orientation without a full replay | One game plus the shorter recap; recap length is not stated | High: a recap necessarily discloses major first-game developments | Players who want context but need to start the sequel quickly |
| Start the sequel without preparation | Enough for basic follow-through, with more lore gaps possible | One game | Preserves the first game’s discoveries if you later play it, although sequel references may reveal some connections | Gameplay-first players and newcomers testing the series |
| Play the sequel first, then the original | Immediate access to the new story, followed by retrospective context | Two complete games | Most likely to expose some first-game context through the sequel | Players who already own the sequel or do not mind a non-chronological order |
The table’s time entries describe the number of games, not measured hours. No reliable completion-time figure is established in the supplied coverage, so treat any online hour estimate as a separate claim rather than a guarantee.
Which order should you choose?
Choose the original first if narrative continuity is your priority
Start with Tormented Souls if you want Caroline’s arc in chronological order, prefer to discover the first game’s major developments yourself, or dislike entering a sequel after its world and characters are already established. This is the safest choice for avoiding the lore confusion noted in review coverage and for preserving the emotional context that prior play provides.
Choose recap-then-sequel if you want a balanced route
The official Steam recap is the middle path. It acknowledges that the first game matters while respecting players who do not want to complete it immediately. Use this route when you want more than a cold start but less commitment than two full campaigns. Remember that a recap is a summary, not a replacement for the original’s pacing and discoveries.
Choose sequel-first if you mainly want to play the newest release
Begin with Tormented Souls 2 when your priority is the sequel itself and you accept that some references may have less meaning. The evidence supports independent enjoyment, so this is a valid order rather than a mistake. If the story feels under-explained, pause and consult the official recap before assuming that you need to restart from the beginning.

- A HOSTILE WORLD: In addition to the civil war dividing the country, the region is suffering from a mysterious calamity, which has given rise to supernatural creatures that no modern weapon can defeat. Your drone and sword from a different age are your faithful allies as you cut a path through lands infested with terrifying chimeras and try to unravel the mystery of their appearance.
- A UNIQUE EXPLORATION SYSTEM: No map, no compass, no quest markers. Following your instincts is part of the adventure. Enjoy a unique experience that uses innovative writing and level design to let you make your own decisions and follow your instincts as you explore. Your discoveries are yours alone.
- COMBAT AGAINST ORIGINAL CREATURES: Swords, spears and axes. A wide range of weapons forged specially for fighting these supernatural creatures is available. You must learn how to fight these monsters and use your drone wisely to stay alive.
- 'The central theme of Hell is Us is that human violence is a perpetual cycle fueled by human emotions and passions.'' – Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, Creative Director
Choose sequel-first when you are comfortable with established lore
Some players routinely enter long-running series through later installments. If you are comfortable inferring relationships and accepting that not every historical detail will be explained immediately, the sequel’s independent playability makes that approach reasonable. The trade-off is reduced context, not an inability to complete or broadly understand the game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use the official recap
- Open the official Tormented Souls Steam community page before starting the sequel.
- Find the story-recap post that was published for players who had finished the first game.
- Read it before launching Tormented Souls 2 if you want the sequel’s references to have more context from the outset.
- If you want to preserve the first game’s surprises, skip the recap and play the original instead; the recap is designed to disclose earlier story information.
- Keep the recap available as a reference if a character, event or relationship in the sequel seems to assume prior knowledge.
The recap is particularly useful because it comes from the game’s official Steam community presence rather than an unrelated plot summary. It is still a condensed account, so it should be viewed as an orientation tool, not proof that the two games offer identical narrative experiences.
How much will a newcomer understand?
The immediate adventure
Based on the Steam review and Meristation’s assessment, a newcomer can follow the sequel’s immediate situation well enough to play it. The game is not described as requiring a completed save file, a specific ending or a separate lore guide before it can be understood.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe larger mythology
The weaker area is the larger body of lore surrounding Caroline and the events that preceded the sequel. Review coverage warns that newcomers may struggle to get fully up to speed, while the PlayStation Store review advises playing the first game to avoid missing story material. That does not contradict independent playability: it distinguishes functional understanding from complete understanding.
Best Value
- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
The significance of callbacks
Without the first game, you may recognize a callback as information but not appreciate its history. Playing the original supplies the missing cause-and-effect chain. A recap can communicate that chain in outline, but it cannot recreate the feeling of encountering each revelation in sequence.
Will skipping the first game spoil it?
Starting the sequel does not guarantee that every first-game twist will be revealed, and the available sources do not provide a complete spoiler list. It is nevertheless reasonable to assume that a direct continuation may refer to earlier outcomes or identify connections that the original would have introduced more gradually. If preserving the first game’s surprises is important, play it first. If you are willing to learn its broad setup through a recap or sequel references, the non-chronological order remains viable.
A simple decision rule
- Play the first game first if you want maximum story context, chronological character development and the fewest chances of learning earlier plot points out of order.
- Use the official recap if you want to start the sequel soon but do not want to enter without any background.
- Start with Tormented Souls 2 if you mainly care about the sequel’s gameplay and accept that some lore will have less impact.
There is no evidence that the first game is a technical requirement for Tormented Souls 2. The decision is about how much narrative context and discovery you want before Caroline Walker’s next chapter, not whether the sequel can be launched or broadly followed.
