No. You can play Red Dead Redemption 2 without finishing—or even starting—Red Dead Redemption. The 2018 game is a prequel set mainly in 1899, and its story introduces its own setting, conflict, protagonist and supporting cast.
The better order depends on what you value. Play Red Dead Redemption first if you want the original release-order suspense and the way the first game’s revelations were designed to land. Play Red Dead Redemption 2 first if you prefer the fictional chronology, want Arthur Morgan’s story before John Marston’s, or are more comfortable beginning with the newer game’s presentation and systems.

The two valid ways to play the series
There are two complete, coherent routes through the single-player stories:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Release order: Red Dead Redemption (2010), then Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018).
- Chronological order: Red Dead Redemption 2, set mainly in 1899, then Red Dead Redemption, whose story takes place later.
Neither route makes the second game incomprehensible. The difference is the context in which you learn about the characters, the outlaw gang and the changing American West. Your choice changes the timing of reveals rather than whether the plot can be followed.

How the stories fit together
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the prequel
PlayStation’s official overview opens with “America, 1899. The end of the wild west era has begun as lawmen hunt down the last remaining outlaw gangs.” Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are at the center of that story. The game shows an earlier stage of the world and the gang’s history, not a retelling of the first game.
An academic discussion published in 2020 describes Red Dead Redemption 2 as a prequel to the 2010 Red Dead Redemption, placing it twelve years earlier. That interval gives the newer game room to establish relationships, choices and events that later affect how the original game is understood.
Red Dead Redemption follows John Marston
Rockstar describes the 2010 title as the critically acclaimed predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster. Its single-player story follows John Marston across the American West and Mexico as he attempts to put his outlaw past behind him. In the two-game arc, John’s journey is the later chapter.
You do not need a character encyclopedia before starting either game. Each title gives enough immediate information to identify its protagonist, location, central conflict and stakes. Prior knowledge mainly changes the emotional weight and interpretation of later scenes.
Release order versus chronological order
| Consideration | Release order: Red Dead Redemption → Red Dead Redemption 2 | Chronological order: Red Dead Redemption 2 → Red Dead Redemption |
|---|---|---|
| Timeline | Begins with the later period, then moves back to 1899. | Follows the fictional timeline from 1899 into the later events. |
| Reveal structure | Preserves the way the original audience encountered the first game, then lets the prequel add context. | Lets earlier events establish background before the first game’s later story. |
| Primary viewpoint | Starts with John Marston, then shifts to Arthur Morgan. | Starts with Arthur Morgan, then shifts to John Marston. |
| Presentation transition | Moves from the older game to the newer game’s expanded systems and presentation. | Moves from the newer game to the older title’s design and mechanics. |
| Best fit | Players who prioritize original-release suspense and a progressive technical transition. | Players who prioritize chronology or want Arthur’s origin story first. |
Why choose release order?
It preserves the original suspense
The first game was written and released without requiring players to know the prequel’s history. Starting there preserves its intended sequence of discoveries. When you then play Red Dead Redemption 2, earlier events can reframe people, places and decisions you already encountered without asking you to unlearn your first impressions.
It starts with John’s established arc
John Marston is the protagonist audiences met in 2010. Beginning with him gives you the later portion of the series’ broad arc first, followed by Arthur Morgan’s earlier story. This order can make the prequel feel like an expansion of a world you already recognize.
Rank #2
- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed adventure.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the ground-breaking horror story expansion that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
- Experience the epic western adventures that defined a generation
It avoids a mechanics downgrade
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the newer release. Starting with Red Dead Redemption means the second game generally feels like an expansion in presentation and systems rather than a step backward. That is a preference about adapting to game design, not a claim about performance or image quality on every platform.

Why choose chronological order?
It follows the fictional timeline
If you want events in story order, start with 1899 and continue into John Marston’s later journey. Arthur’s experiences establish the earlier history of the gang and the world before the first game’s central events.
It makes Arthur Morgan your entry point
Arthur is the lead character of Red Dead Redemption 2, and the official synopsis introduces him directly rather than treating him as someone returning from the first game. Players who connect more strongly with his perspective may prefer to begin there.
It uses the newer game as an introduction
Concerned that you will miss essential context? The official PlayStation description supplies the basic setup: the year, the decline of the outlaw era, the lawmen pursuing gangs, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang. That is sufficient to understand the opening situation without having played John’s story.
Which order fits your priorities?
Choose Red Dead Redemption first if you value reveals
This is the strongest recommendation for a first-time player who wants the release-order experience. You will encounter the original game’s information in its intended sequence, then approach the prequel with a clearer sense of what kinds of details may matter later.
Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 first if you value chronology
This route suits players who dislike jumping backward in a timeline. You begin with Arthur and the gang in 1899, complete that earlier chapter, and then continue to John’s later story in Red Dead Redemption.

Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 first if Arthur is the deciding factor
If the character you most want to follow is Arthur Morgan, there is no reason to delay the game for prerequisite knowledge. Its campaign is designed to stand on its own and introduces its own relationships and objectives.
Choose Red Dead Redemption first if older controls may bother you
Moving from the older title to the newer one lets you experience the series’ later mechanical and presentation changes as an upgrade. Starting with the newer game is still valid, but you should expect the subsequent switch to feel like a move to an earlier generation of design.
What happens if you start with Red Dead Redemption 2?
You can follow the campaign, understand why the gang is under pressure and identify Arthur’s role from the opening chapters. You are not required to know John Marston’s later life, the first game’s locations or its previous missions.

That is not a comprehension problem; it is the normal trade-off of chronological order. You learn the background first and encounter the later consequences afterward.
What happens if you start with Red Dead Redemption?
You receive John Marston’s story as the first entry point and can understand its objectives without the prequel. When you move to Red Dead Redemption 2, the earlier setting and Arthur’s perspective provide new context for the world you already know.
The main practical cost is that you begin with the older release. If modern presentation and systems are your highest priority, the chronological route may feel more immediately comfortable. If preserving the original reveal pattern matters more, that trade-off is usually worthwhile.

Availability is separate from story order. Official storefront listings for both games exist, but platform support, regional availability, prices and promotions can change. Check the store for your country and device before buying.

| Red Dead Redemption 2 on PlayStation 4 | PlayStation lists Standard and Ultimate editions with Story Mode included. The page records the PS4 release date as October 26, 2018. |

When searching a retailer, the label “Red Dead Redemption 2 PS4” identifies the newer game’s PS4 release, while a listing simply titled “Red Dead Redemption” identifies the first game. Confirm the platform and edition in the product details; similarly named listings are not interchangeable.
A practical two-game playthrough plan
Plan A: reveal-first
- Play the complete single-player campaign of Red Dead Redemption.
- Take a break if you want the change in setting and viewpoint to feel distinct.
- Start Red Dead Redemption 2 as a prequel, paying attention to how its earlier events add context to the world and people you already know.
- Use the newer game’s optional activities at your own pace; they are not required to understand the first game.
Plan B: timeline-first
- Begin with Red Dead Redemption 2 and follow Arthur Morgan’s campaign from its 1899 setting.
- Finish the story before moving on, so the earlier chapter has a clear endpoint in your memory.
- Play Red Dead Redemption as John Marston’s later story.
- Expect the transition to include older mechanics and presentation, and judge it as a continuation of the timeline rather than as a newer technical release.
Do you need to finish one game before sampling the other?
No. The games are connected, but there is no gameplay requirement to complete the first title before launching the second. If you own only Red Dead Redemption 2, start it; its opening establishes the necessary premise. If you own only Red Dead Redemption, it remains a complete story in its own right.
For the strongest narrative effect, avoid switching between campaigns in the middle of a first playthrough. Finish one main story, then begin the other. This keeps each protagonist’s perspective and the timeline easier to track.
Is the official guide necessary?
Rockstar’s launch announcement named the Red Dead Redemption 2 Complete Official Guide by Piggyback. A guide is optional: nothing in the ordering question requires it, and availability can depend on the retailer and edition. Use one only if you want help with optional activities, collectibles or mission details rather than basic story context.

Final recommendation
There is no prerequisite game. For most first-time players who care about the series’ original reveal structure, play Red Dead Redemption first and then Red Dead Redemption 2. For players who want a strict timeline or specifically want Arthur Morgan’s origin story, reverse the order. Both paths are narratively coherent; the right choice is the one that matches whether you prioritize release-order suspense, chronology, protagonist preference or a smoother move from older to newer mechanics.
