No. You can start with Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater without playing any earlier Metal Gear game. PlayStation’s official FAQ describes the remake as taking place at the very start of the saga chronologically, making it a deliberate entry point for newcomers. Earlier games are optional context, not prerequisites.

Can you start with Metal Gear Solid Delta?

Yes. Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater is designed to work as a first Metal Gear game. It remakes 2004’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, but that story is set in the 1960s Cold War, before the events depicted in the later-released games. The central character is Naked Snake, the soldier who will eventually be known as Big Boss.

PlayStation’s official FAQ answers the question directly: “No. Although METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER is a remake of 2004’s METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SNAKE EATER, chronologically the story takes place at the very start of the Metal Gear Saga, making it a perfect starting point.” That is the clearest guidance for a first-time player: begin with Delta if Delta is the game you want to play.

You do not need to memorize the chronology, understand later political factions, or complete another title first. The game introduces its own mission, characters and stakes. Playing older entries can add background and make some later consequences more meaningful, but it is enrichment rather than homework.

Why Delta works as a first game

Its story comes first in the saga’s timeline

Release order and story order are different in this series. Snake Eater was released in 2004, yet its plot is set decades before many other Metal Gear stories. Delta preserves that early chronological position. You are meeting Naked Snake near the beginning of the character’s journey, not joining an unfinished plot that assumes you already know the ending.

The opening situation is self-contained

The core assignment gives a new player a clear objective. Snake must infiltrate Soviet territory, rescue weapons engineer Sokolov and deal with the crisis created when Colonel Volgin captures Sokolov. The mission also forces Snake to confront his former mentor, The Boss. Those relationships and conflicts are presented as part of this game’s narrative; they are not dependent on completing a previous release.

It is a full remake, not a short recap

PlayStation calls Delta “a full, enhanced remake” of the 2004 game. The official description says the story, characters, voice acting and music remain the same, while the remake uses Unreal Engine 5 and adds quality-of-life features. An optional modern control style is one example. That combination gives newcomers the original story’s starting point with a current presentation and control option, rather than requiring them to experience an older game first for the plot to make sense.

What knowledge from older games is optional?

Recurring characters and names

A long-running series naturally gains extra resonance when you recognize a returning name or understand how a person’s reputation develops. Someone who has played other entries may notice connections earlier or attach more significance to a relationship. A first-time player can still follow Delta’s immediate cast because the game’s mission and character dynamics are established within its own story.

Later consequences

Knowing where the wider saga eventually leads can change how you interpret decisions and relationships in a prequel. That is a reason to revisit older games after Delta, not a reason to delay Delta. Going in without that information also preserves the intended uncertainty around Snake’s mission and the people he meets.

  • SETTING: BATTLE OF REPADS JOUNGLES: Measure yourself with the environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats law in the shadow, and noises alert predators

Series terminology and political context

The broader franchise uses recurring military, intelligence and ideological concepts. Prior games can make those references feel familiar, but Delta’s 1960s setting gives it a defined context of its own: a Cold War operation involving Soviet territory, a captured engineer, a mentor and a direct field mission. You can learn the terms that matter as the story introduces them.

What should a first-time player expect from the story?

Delta follows Naked Snake at the beginning of the saga’s chronology. His operation is not an abstract history lesson; it is a focused infiltration mission with personal stakes. Snake is sent into Soviet territory to recover Sokolov, a weapons engineer whose capture by Colonel Volgin turns the operation into a larger confrontation. The mission also places Snake opposite The Boss, his former mentor.

That setup is enough to understand the immediate questions the game asks: Can Snake complete the rescue, whom can he trust, and what does his confrontation with The Boss mean for his identity as a soldier? You do not need a diagram of every later game to care about those questions.

Delta versus going back to the older collection

PlayStation identifies Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 as an available related title for players who want earlier entries and broader series context. It is an optional route, not an officially required pre-course. The practical choice depends on whether you want Delta’s specific story or a wider tour of the franchise.

Choice Chronological role Presentation Best fit
Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater At the beginning of the saga, in the 1960s Cold War Full enhanced remake of the 2004 game, built with Unreal Engine 5 and offering an optional modern control style Someone who wants to understand Snake’s early story with a contemporary remake
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 Related earlier entries for wider context A collection route rather than Delta’s remake presentation Someone who wants to explore more of the series after, or alongside, Delta

The sources do not publish a definitive complete play order for the entire franchise. Therefore, any recommendation to follow release order, chronology or a particular sequence is editorial guidance rather than an official rule. If your immediate question is whether you will understand Delta, the answer remains yes without the collection.

Recommended play paths

Path 1: You are completely new to Metal Gear

  1. Start with Delta. Its story occupies the saga’s earliest chronological position and introduces Naked Snake’s mission directly.
  2. Play at your own pace. Do not stop to look up every name or historical connection; that can expose information from later games.
  3. Decide afterward whether you want more context. If the characters and themes interest you, use Master Collection Vol. 1 as a way to explore related earlier entries.

Path 2: You have played some Metal Gear games but not MGS3

Delta can still be your next game. Your existing knowledge may make certain references easier to recognize, but you do not need to reconstruct a missing order before starting. Treat Delta as a prequel chapter and let its own presentation establish the relevant details.

Path 3: You already played the 2004 MGS3

You can go straight to Delta without replaying the original first. The remake retains the story, characters, voice acting and music identified in the official FAQ, while updating the technology and adding quality-of-life options. Replaying the original is useful only if you want to compare presentations or revisit that version for its own sake.

Path 4: You care most about the whole saga

Start with Delta if you prefer chronological storytelling, then use the related collection to broaden your understanding. Alternatively, you can choose a release-order route as a personal preference, but label it as such: the official material confirms Delta’s chronological starting point and the availability of the collection, not one mandatory sequence for every game.

Does playing older games prevent spoilers?

Playing older entries first is not a spoiler-protection requirement. In fact, because Delta is set earlier in the timeline, consulting summaries or later games before playing it may reveal information about characters’ eventual histories. If you want to experience Delta on its own terms, start it without researching the franchise’s later outcomes.

Players who already know the wider series will naturally bring that knowledge with them. That can add dramatic irony, but it is a different experience from a blind first playthrough. Neither approach is incorrect; choose whether you want discovery or additional context.

Platforms, release timing and editions

Konami announced Delta for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. PlayStation lists the PS5 release date as August 28, 2025. Those platform details matter when deciding whether to buy Delta or seek an older version: the remake is the current release associated with those systems, while the 2004 game is the source material it recreates.

Physical and digital editions can vary by platform and region. Check the current listing for your country, system and edition before purchasing, especially if you are choosing between a physical PS5 copy and a digital version. The decision to buy an older collection should likewise account for which entries and edition are actually offered in your region; availability can change independently of the story’s recommended starting point.

Common mistakes first-time players can avoid

  • Assuming release order is mandatory. The fact that other games launched earlier does not make them prerequisites for a story set later in the timeline.
  • Looking up every character before playing. Search results can reveal later-series developments that Delta expects you to discover through play.
  • Expecting a completely new plot. Delta is an enhanced remake of the 2004 Snake Eater; its value is the preserved story and cast combined with updated technology and quality-of-life features.
  • Confusing optional context with required explanation. Earlier games may deepen your appreciation of recurring characters and consequences, but Delta’s central mission is understandable without them.
  • Treating a personal play order as official law. No definitive complete order is published in the cited official material, so choose chronology or release order according to the experience you want.

Bottom line for different readers

If you want the simplest answer

Play Delta first. You need no older game to begin.

If you want the broadest context

Play Delta, then explore Master Collection Vol. 1 and other related entries. The earlier games can add meaning to recurring characters and later consequences after you have experienced Snake’s starting point.

If you are deciding whether to replay MGS3

You can skip a preliminary replay. Delta preserves the 2004 story, characters, voice acting and music while presenting the adventure as a full enhanced remake.
