No. You can start Resident Evil Requiem without completing any earlier game. Producer Masato Kumazawa said newcomers do not need the past games to understand the story; the one piece of background he identifies as necessary is that Leon was involved in the Raccoon City incident. Earlier titles add context and callbacks, but they are optional preparation rather than prerequisites.
The direct answer for new players
Resident Evil Requiem is designed to work as a first Resident Evil for players who have never touched the series. You do not need to play Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil Village or a complete chronological run before starting.

That conclusion comes from the game’s producer, not from a guess based on the title’s marketing. In a developer interview, Masato Kumazawa was asked about newcomers and gave a direct answer: You don’t need to know the past games to understand the story this time around. The only thing you need to know is that he was involved in the Raccoon City incident.
In context, “he” refers to Leon.

So there are two different questions to separate:
- Can you follow the plot? Yes, according to the producer.
- Will older games add meaning, references and emotional context? Also yes, especially the games connected to Raccoon City and Leon.
Play earlier entries only if you want that extra context, not because you are worried that Requiem will be incomprehensible without it.

Why Requiem still feels connected to the older games
Capcom announced Requiem as the ninth main installment, but “ninth” describes its place in the numbered mainline rather than a requirement to finish eight previous campaigns. The game returns to the series’ overarching narrative rooted in Raccoon City and the secret operations of the Umbrella Corporation.
Raccoon City is important because it is the setting that established much of the series’ central history. Umbrella’s experiments, the outbreak and the people who survived that disaster provide the connective tissue between otherwise different installments. Requiem revisits that thread while introducing Grace Ashcroft as a new protagonist, so it has a familiar historical foundation without making a returning character the only way into the story.
Leon is the other bridge to the past. He is a returning lead with a personal connection to the Raccoon City incident, while Grace is intended to be a relatable newcomer unlike earlier protagonists such as Leon or Chris. That combination lets the game acknowledge long-running events and still give first-time players a character through whom they can learn what matters.

If you want to play one older game before Requiem, Resident Evil 2 is the most targeted choice. This is an editorial recommendation based on the developers’ comments, not a stated requirement from Capcom. Kumazawa describes Requiem as Leon’s first return to Raccoon City since Resident Evil 2 and calls the city “the place where it all began.”
That makes Resident Evil 2 useful for understanding the location, the atmosphere and why Leon’s history there matters. It is more directly relevant to Requiem’s setting than a broad tour through every previous title. You can still understand Requiem without it, but the return to Raccoon City is likely to carry more weight if you have seen Leon’s earlier connection to the city.
What each commonly mentioned game adds
| Game or route | What it can add before Requiem | Is it required? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 2 | Direct Raccoon City context and background for Leon’s first major connection to the setting. | No. It is the most focused optional choice. | Players who want the setting and Leon’s history to feel familiar. |
| Resident Evil 4 | Useful reference point for Leon’s later, more action-oriented style and history. | No. | Players interested in the gameplay side of Leon’s return. |
| Resident Evil 7 | Part of the recent mainline era and a different family-centered storyline. | No. Requiem is not presented as a continuation that requires it. | Players who want another modern horror-focused campaign. |
| Resident Evil Village | Continues the Winters family story introduced in Resident Evil 7. | No. Requiem deliberately returns to the Raccoon City thread instead. | Players following the Winters arc for its own sake. |
| A complete chronological marathon | More information about recurring characters, Umbrella and the series’ connective throughline. | No. It is far more preparation than the producer says you need. | Longtime-lore readers who enjoy seeing every historical link. |
The table is about relevance to Requiem, not a ranking of quality. Every listed game can be enjoyable independently, but enjoyment and prerequisite status are different things.
Choose your preparation based on your goal
Start Requiem immediately
This is the correct route if you mainly want to play the new release. The developers explicitly designed the story to be understandable without previous-game knowledge. You can treat explanations in Requiem as your introduction to Leon, Grace, Raccoon City and the Umbrella-related history that the campaign considers important.

Get the Raccoon City context first
Choose Resident Evil 2 if you want one deliberate piece of preparation. It is the closest match to the setting emphasized by the developers, and it gives you a concrete understanding of why returning to Raccoon City matters to Leon. Stop there if your goal is context rather than a full lore project.
Explore the wider series mythology
Play additional mainline games when your interest is the broader history, not basic comprehension. Earlier entries can explain the Raccoon City incident, Umbrella’s role, recurring characters and the way the series carries a connective throughline from one title to the next. A complete order is optional because each installment also evolves its own cast, location and style.
Prioritize recent horror games
Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village are recent mainline releases, but both focus on the Winters family. They may be a good choice if you want modern controls and presentation or want to follow that family story. They are not setup chapters for Requiem’s return to Raccoon City, so playing them first does not solve a requirement that Requiem imposes.
How Grace and Leon divide the experience
Requiem has one unified story shared by Grace Ashcroft and Leon. The developers describe Grace as a new, relatable protagonist and say the game is built around contrasting approaches to horror.

Grace’s sections
Grace’s gameplay is based on Resident Evil 2. That comparison signals a stronger emphasis on horror and the Raccoon City tradition of vulnerable exploration, even though Grace herself is new. You do not need to know the earlier game’s plot to understand her role; the connection mainly explains the intended tone and design lineage.
Leon’s sections
Leon’s gameplay is based on Resident Evil 4, which provides the reference point for a more action-oriented style. Playing Resident Evil 4 can help you recognize that contrast, but it is not a lore exam. Requiem’s story is unified, so Leon’s past is introduced as part of the campaign rather than assumed as homework.

You do not need a character encyclopedia. The producer’s guidance reduces the essential background to Leon’s involvement in the Raccoon City incident. Requiem also establishes its own starting point through Grace and the present-day situation.

- Leon is a returning protagonist whose connection to Raccoon City predates this game.
- Grace Ashcroft is a new lead, giving first-time players an entry point that is not dependent on recognizing previous protagonists.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is Requiem a sequel to one specific game?
The available developer description points to a continuation of the broader Raccoon City and Umbrella narrative rather than a direct sequel that demands one particular preceding campaign. That distinction explains why Resident Evil 2 is the most relevant optional primer while still not being mandatory.
The recent Resident Evil 7 and Village games show how the series can focus on a distinct family and setting for multiple releases. Requiem changes direction deliberately, returning to an older narrative foundation while introducing Grace. Its continuity is therefore broad and thematic as well as character-specific.
Release date and platforms
Capcom announced Resident Evil Requiem as the ninth main installment with a release date of February 27, 2026. The original release notice listed PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Capcom’s later sales announcement also listed Nintendo Switch 2, so the released platform set is PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
Platform availability does not change the prerequisite answer. Whichever version you play, the producer’s newcomer guidance applies to the story itself. Check the store page for the exact edition and platform before buying, because listings can differ by system and region.
What the sales figure does—and does not—tell you
Capcom reported 5 million units sold as of March 4, 2026. That is a company announcement, not an independent sales audit. The figure shows substantial audience reach, but it does not prove that every buyer had played earlier entries or that the game requires them. The developer’s direct statement remains the relevant evidence for the newcomer question.
A practical decision rule
- Want to play now? Start Requiem alone.
- Want the most relevant context in one older game? Play Resident Evil 2 first.
- Want to understand Leon’s action-oriented lineage? Add Resident Evil 4, knowing it is optional.
- Want the Winters family story? Play Resident Evil 7 followed by Resident Evil Village as a separate arc.
- Want every connection? Work through earlier mainline games at your own pace, but do not delay Requiem on the assumption that the marathon is necessary.
The shortest honest recommendation is therefore simple: play Requiem by itself unless you specifically want extra Raccoon City context, in which case choose Resident Evil 2.
