Recommended Free Tools
Yes. The free upgrade is for people who already own Metro Exodus on the relevant platform or store. On PC, the Enhanced Edition is a separate library item—not a patch—and requires a ray-tracing-capable graphics card. The publisher describes the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions as free upgrades for current owners.
What “free upgrade” means on PC
The PC Enhanced Edition is a separate installable edition because the technical changes were too extensive to deliver as a patch. If you already own the base game, check your library in the store where you bought it for a separate Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition item. The publisher’s announcement named Epic Games Store, Steam, GOG, and Windows Store; its launch instructions specifically said existing owners should see a separate library item. Store listings and account interfaces can change, so use the library for the account that owns the game.

If you do not own the game, buying Metro Exodus grants access to the standard and Enhanced PC editions, according to the publisher’s announcement. The publisher described the offer as “FREE to all existing Metro Exodus owners on the Epic Games Store, Steam and GoG.” Read the PC Enhanced Edition announcement.
PC hardware requirement
The PC Enhanced Edition is designed to run with ray tracing enabled and requires a ray-tracing-capable GPU. Steam identifies compatible NVIDIA RTX or AMD RX graphics cards in its system requirements. This requirement applies to the Enhanced Edition; it should not be confused with the requirements for the standard PC edition. Check the current Steam listing.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S upgrades
The publisher announced the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions as free upgrades for current owners, saying, “And to make things even better, it’s a free upgrade for current owners.” See the publisher’s console-release announcement.
The announcement does not spell out every case involving a disc, account, region, or cross-generation purchase. If your ownership situation is unusual, check the upgrade option shown by the same platform account or store where you own the game, or consult the publisher’s current support information.

Base game and expansions are separate entitlements
Owning the base game does not automatically grant the PC Enhanced versions of The Two Colonels or Sam’s Story. Their Enhanced versions follow ownership of the corresponding expansion: the publisher says entitlement is based on what you own, and Steam states that buying the Expansion Pass or either individual expansion entitles you to the Enhanced version of that DLC. Steam’s listing has the current product and DLC details.
The publisher also announced a physical Complete Edition for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5 that includes the base game and both story expansions. It is a purchase option for someone who does not own the game or wants that bundled edition—not something an eligible current owner needs to buy to claim an upgrade. The console announcement describes the Complete Edition.
