The mast or support structure and the antenna lead-in are separate parts of the system, and requirements for each depend on locally adopted electrical rules and the building’s grounding system. Grounding can help drain static charges and provide some protection against voltage surges, but it does not make an antenna lightning-proof or guarantee better FM reception.
What needs grounding on an outdoor FM antenna?
For an outdoor receiving antenna, safety guidance addresses both the antenna’s supporting structure and the lead-in cable entering the building. Treating the job as simply driving a separate ground rod beside the mast can miss the required bonding and discharge path.

- Mast or support structure: OSHA’s construction-safety regulation addresses effective grounding of antenna-support structures. Its scope is construction safety; it is not a complete homeowner installation manual. OSHA 29 CFR § 1926.408.
- Lead-in: OSHA’s regulation says each conductor of an outdoor antenna lead-in must have an antenna discharge unit or another means to drain static charges. This is a requirement stated within that construction regulation, not a substitute for checking the rules applicable to your property. OSHA 29 CFR § 1926.408(c)(2)(ii).
The discharge unit is part of the lead-in’s protection path. A Cisco installation guide for its specific antenna product family places the unit near the point where the lead-in enters the building; that is manufacturer guidance for that product family, not a universal installation specification. Grounding and bonding can help drain static charges and offer some protection from voltage surges. A manufacturer safety manual describes this as “some protection” rather than complete protection. It does not establish that a grounded antenna will survive a direct lightning strike or prevent all damage to connected equipment. Manufacturer safety manual.

Do not treat a grounding component as a stand-alone guarantee. The installation must use a suitable discharge path and connect to the building’s grounding system in the manner required by the applicable rules.
Keep the antenna clear of overhead power lines
Choose a location where neither the antenna nor its supporting structure can fall into or accidentally contact overhead power conductors. OSHA addresses this placement hazard, and manufacturer safety guidance warns that contact with power lines can be fatal. OSHA 29 CFR § 1926.408; Manufacturer safety manual.

If safe clearance cannot be maintained, do not install the antenna near the lines. Do not attempt work that would put you, the antenna, or its supports at risk of contacting them.
How to plan a code-compliant installation
- Identify the installation type. This guidance concerns an outdoor FM receiving antenna. Requirements for transmitting systems or other antenna types may differ.
- Check the locally adopted electrical rules. NFPA lists the 2026 edition of the National Electrical Code as current, but that does not establish which edition or amendments apply at a particular address. Confirm the adopted requirements with your local authority having jurisdiction. NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) code-development page.
- Plan the complete grounding and bonding path. Account for the mast or support, lead-in discharge unit, and connection to the building’s grounding system. Do not assume a separate ground rod or a cable-grounding block alone makes the installation compliant.
- Confirm component compatibility and placement. Use a discharge unit appropriate for the cable and system, and follow the antenna manufacturer’s instructions. The cited Cisco guide’s near-entry placement is an example for its product family, not a universal rule. Cisco antenna installation guide.
- Get qualified help when details are uncertain. Conductor sizing, bonding point, and permitted installation depend on the adopted code, local amendments, building grounding system, and equipment instructions. Ask the local authority or a qualified electrician rather than improvising those details.

Does grounding improve FM reception?
The cited safety and installation guidance does not establish that grounding an FM antenna improves broadcast reception. Grounding discussed in radio-frequency contexts has a different purpose and should not be used to promise better reception from an FM receiving antenna. ARRL: Grounding.
