No—provided you already have an Eternal character. Diablo 4 Season 15, Season of Hell’s Legacy, introduces Rebirth, which lets you convert an existing Eternal hero into a Seasonal character instead of making a separate hero. Rebirth returns that character to level 1 while preserving its class, name, appearance and Normal or Hardcore status. If you are new to Diablo IV and have no existing character, you must create one and choose the Seasonal Realm.
The short answer for each type of player
Your starting point determines what you need to do:

- You have an Eternal character: Select that hero for Rebirth and enter Season 15 without creating another character.
- You have no Diablo IV character: Create a character and select the Seasonal Realm during character creation.
- You want your existing hero left exactly as it is: Keep it on the Eternal Realm and either rebirth a different hero or create a separate Seasonal character.
Rebirth is an alternative to making a new seasonal hero, not a way to continue an Eternal hero at its current level. The converted character starts the season at level 1.
What Rebirth does in Season 15
Blizzard describes the feature this way: “Instead of having to create a new character at the start of each season, you’ll be able to select an Eternal character to continue their adventures in the Seasonal realm.” In practical terms, Rebirth changes the selected hero’s realm from Eternal to Seasonal and starts that hero’s seasonal progression from level 1.

Details that stay with the reborn character
- The character’s class remains the same.
- The character’s name remains the same.
- The character’s appearance remains the same.
- The character’s Normal or Hardcore state remains the same.
If the character is saved in an ensemble, eligible cosmetic preferences can also transfer. The listed cosmetic settings include transmogs, pigments, mounts and accessories, pets, portals and headstones. These are identity and appearance settings; they do not prevent the level reset or replace seasonal progression.
Details that change
The important change is progression. Rebirth resets the character to level 1, so the hero must progress through Season 15 from the beginning. The feature gives you continuity of identity rather than a continuation of the old character’s level or current seasonal progress.
What to do before selecting Rebirth
Inventory preparation is the critical safety step. Blizzard’s Rebirth rules require you to move all gear and items out of the character’s equipment and personal inventory and into the Eternal stash before rebirthing.

- Remove equipped gear. The character cannot be rebirthed while equipment remains on it.
- Empty the personal inventory. Move every item from that character’s personal inventory into the Eternal stash.
- Confirm that the stash contains anything you intend to keep. Items left in the character’s equipment or personal inventory are not retained through Rebirth.
- Use the Rebirth option for that character. The selected hero is converted to the Seasonal Realm and reset to level 1.
Rebirth is unavailable while the character still has equipment or items in personal inventory. That restriction is also a warning: retained items are lost when the character is reborn. Stashing items first protects them in the Eternal stash and clears the condition that blocks the feature.

Should you rebirth your main Eternal character?
That depends on whether preserving the original hero in its current state matters to you. Rebirth uses the existing character slot and identity, but it does not create a duplicate. The selected Eternal character becomes the Seasonal character and returns to level 1.

Rebirth is appropriate when continuity matters
Choose Rebirth when you want to play Season 15 with the same class and recognizable hero name or appearance. It avoids rebuilding that identity from scratch. You still accept the level-1 restart and the seasonal reset of progression.
A separate character is better when the Eternal hero must remain untouched
Do not rebirth a hero you want to keep available exactly as an Eternal character. Rebirth converts that selected character; it is not a copy function. Leave the original on Eternal and use another character for Seasonal play.
What first-time players must do
A player with no existing Diablo IV character cannot use Rebirth because there is no Eternal hero to select. Start character creation, choose the desired class and appearance, and select the Seasonal Realm. That new character begins Season 15’s progression at the start.

The distinction is simple: Rebirth is for an existing Eternal character, while Seasonal Realm selection during creation is the route for a new player. Both routes produce a Seasonal character, but only Rebirth preserves the selected existing hero’s class, name and appearance.
How the level-1 reset affects your decision
Rebirth should be treated as a fresh seasonal start. The character’s former level is not carried into Season 15. If your reason for using an old hero is to avoid leveling, Rebirth does not provide that benefit; its value is retaining the hero’s identity and eligible cosmetic setup.
This also explains why the feature can replace the usual “make a new character” step without eliminating the seasonal restart. You keep the shell of the hero while beginning the season’s progression from level 1.

What happens to gear and items
Gear and items are the area where an irreversible mistake is most likely. Before Rebirth, move everything in the selected character’s equipment and personal inventory to the Eternal stash. Blizzard states that retained items are lost on Rebirth, and the feature cannot be used until those locations are empty.

Safe handling checklist
- Inspect every equipment slot, including items you are not actively using.
- Open the character’s personal inventory and move all items out.
- Put items you want to keep in the Eternal stash before selecting Rebirth.
- Only proceed after the character has no equipment and no personal-inventory items.
The rule concerns equipment and the personal inventory of the character being rebirthed. The documented preparation is to place those items in the Eternal stash before conversion; do not assume an item left on the hero will be carried into the Seasonal Realm.

Rebirth preserves the selected character’s Normal or Hardcore state. A Normal hero remains Normal, and a Hardcore hero remains Hardcore after conversion. Rebirth therefore does not change that fundamental risk setting; decide whether the character’s existing mode is the one you want for Season 15 before confirming.
Cosmetics and saved appearance
The character’s appearance remains intact. In addition, Blizzard documents transfer of eligible cosmetic preferences when the character is saved in an ensemble. The listed categories are transmogs, pigments, mounts and accessories, pets, portals and headstones.
These settings can make Rebirth feel more continuous than creating an unrelated hero, but they should not be confused with carried-over gameplay progression. The level reset still applies, and equipment must be moved to the Eternal stash before conversion.
What happens when Season 15 ends
At the seasonal transition, Seasonal characters and their progression move to the Eternal Realm. Seasonal-only activities and rules do not remain active as Seasonal content after that transition. This means a rebirthed hero does not stay permanently separated from your non-seasonal roster once Season 15 is over; it returns to the Eternal environment with the progression earned during the season.
The end-of-season move is separate from the initial Rebirth decision. At the start, you choose whether to convert an Eternal hero or create a new Seasonal one. At the end, Seasonal characters transition to Eternal.
A practical decision process
- Do you already have an Eternal character? If no, create a character and select Seasonal Realm. If yes, continue.
- Must that exact hero remain unchanged on Eternal? If yes, do not rebirth it; use another hero for Seasonal play. If no, continue.
- Are you prepared to restart at level 1? Rebirth always resets the selected hero to level 1. If you do not want that restart, leave the hero on Eternal.
- Have you emptied equipment and personal inventory? If no, move those items to the Eternal stash. If yes, continue.
- Do you want that hero’s class, name, appearance and Normal/Hardcore state? If yes, Rebirth preserves them while moving the hero to Seasonal.
Common mistakes and fixes
“The Rebirth option is unavailable”
First check the selected hero’s equipment and personal inventory. Blizzard’s rule blocks Rebirth while either contains items. Remove the gear and items and place them in the Eternal stash, then try again.

That is not how Rebirth works. The converted character always returns to level 1. The feature preserves identity and selected cosmetics, not the previous level.
“I wanted a copy but converted my original”
Rebirth converts the selected Eternal character; it does not leave an unchanged duplicate behind. For a preserved Eternal hero, choose a different character for Seasonal play instead.
“I am a new player and cannot find an Eternal hero”
Rebirth requires an existing Eternal character. Create a character first and choose the Seasonal Realm during character creation.
Bottom line for Season 15
Existing players do not have to create a separate new character for Diablo 4 Season 15. Rebirth converts an Eternal hero to Seasonal, keeps its class, name, appearance and Normal/Hardcore state, and starts the hero at level 1. Empty equipment and personal inventory into the Eternal stash before using it, because those retained items are lost and prevent the conversion. New players still create a character and choose the Seasonal Realm, while anyone who wants an Eternal hero left untouched should use a different character for seasonal play.
