Yes. The new DMZ is included in the paid Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 base game, so you must purchase Modern Warfare 4 to enter DMZ. The Standard Edition is sufficient; the Vault Edition adds premium content and a deployment bonus but does not unlock a separate version of DMZ.
Digital preorders of either edition receive DMZ Early Access on October 20, 2026. The worldwide launch is October 23, 2026.

What you have to buy
Activision describes Modern Warfare 4 as a standalone release. It is sold separately at launch rather than being permanently available as a free-to-play DMZ client. DMZ is part of that full base game, alongside the other launch content, so access follows the edition of Modern Warfare 4 attached to your platform account.
The Standard Edition meets the entry requirement. You do not need the more expensive Vault Edition, a special operator bundle or a separate DMZ purchase. The Vault Edition is an upgrade for players who want its cosmetic items, BlackCell season content and extra in-game resources.

Standard Edition
The Standard Edition includes the complete base game and therefore DMZ access. Activision also lists preorder bonuses where applicable. Those bonuses can depend on the purchase offer and timing, but they are not prerequisites for launching DMZ.
Vault Edition
The Vault Edition includes the same DMZ access as Standard, plus the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack, Special Forces Operator Pack, Signature Weapon Collection and one season of BlackCell. It also includes the DMZ Deployment Bonus described below.
| Edition | DMZ access | Included extras |
|---|---|---|

| Vault Edition | Yes; identical entry access | Hostile Alliance Operator Pack, Special Forces Operator Pack, Signature Weapon Collection, one season of BlackCell and the DMZ Deployment Bonus |
Early Access and launch dates
There are two relevant dates for the 2026 release:
- October 20, 2026: DMZ Early Access begins for digital preorders or prepurchases of any Modern Warfare 4 edition.
- October 23, 2026: worldwide launch.
Early Access applies to digital purchases identified by Activision as preorders or prepurchases. Store activation can vary by platform, region and time zone. Server outages or staged availability can also delay the moment a mode appears, so an eligible purchase does not guarantee that every account will see the mode at exactly the same minute.

Is DMZ free, or does Game Pass include it?
DMZ is not a free standalone mode in the launch arrangement described by Activision. The game must be purchased separately at launch, and Activision says Modern Warfare 4 will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027. That planned timing is later than the October 2026 launch; it is not a launch-day entitlement.

- MULTIPLAYER BUILT ON CONTROL — Engage in grounded, precise combat where fluid movement, player choice, and refined mechanics give you greater control in every firefight.
If you subscribe to Game Pass before that planned inclusion, the subscription alone does not satisfy the launch purchase requirement. You would need to own an eligible edition through a supported store. When the future Game Pass release arrives, its exact edition, platform coverage and subscription tier should be checked against the then-current listing rather than assumed from the 2026 launch terms.
Internet, account and security requirements
Continuous internet connection
Modern Warfare 4 uses texture streaming. Activision Support says this means a continuous internet connection is required to play Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and DMZ. DMZ therefore cannot be treated as an offline campaign-style mode: losing connectivity can prevent entry, interrupt a session or return you to a menu.
A stable broadband connection is especially important when the game is downloading streamed textures or updating mode data. If DMZ fails to load after purchase, first verify that the platform is online and that the game has completed its update. A connection that works for browsing but drops packets during play can still cause disconnections.
Console online subscriptions
Console online play requires the applicable platform subscription:

- PlayStation 5: PlayStation Plus.
- Xbox Series X|S: Game Pass Essential, the current Xbox online-console tier identified in the access requirements.
- Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo Switch Online.
These subscriptions are separate from the Modern Warfare 4 purchase. Buying the game does not replace the platform’s online-service requirement.
Phone linking and PC security
Activision says a linked mobile phone number may be required. Treat phone verification as a possible account step when setting up or signing into the game, particularly if the store or security system prompts for it.
On PC, the stated security requirements include TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. If either feature is disabled in firmware, the game may refuse to meet its security check even when Windows and the graphics hardware otherwise run it. Enable those features in your motherboard firmware only after confirming that your system supports them and that changing boot settings will not make an existing installation unbootable.

Activision lists these purchase platforms for the release: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Availability still depends on the hardware and store region attached to your account.

What the Vault DMZ Deployment Bonus contains
The Vault-only deployment package changes your starting resources, not your eligibility. Activision lists:
- One additional Active Duty slot.
- Two Weapon Insurance Contracts.
- Two Operator Rescue Beacons.
- Two Fulton Drop Markers.
- Two Medium Backpacks.
- Two 2-Plate Carriers.
These items are bonuses delivered with the Vault Edition. They are not tickets, keys or passes required to enter a DMZ match. A Standard owner can play DMZ without them; the practical difference is the extra equipment and slots supplied to a Vault owner.

A US PlayStation listing checked on October 18, 2026 showed these prices:
Best Value
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
| Edition | US PlayStation price shown October 18, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Standard Edition | $69.99 |
| Vault Edition | $99.99 |
Those figures are a dated US store example, not a worldwide price guarantee. Currency conversion, taxes, platform pricing and regional editions can change the amount shown to you. Use the store for your country to confirm the final checkout total and edition contents.
How to get into DMZ after purchasing
- Choose an edition. Select Standard unless you specifically want the Vault operators, weapon collection, BlackCell season or deployment resources.
- Use a supported platform. Buy through Xbox/Microsoft, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam or Nintendo Switch 2, matching the device on which you plan to play.
- Install every update. DMZ depends on current game and streamed-texture data. Wait for the platform to finish downloading before troubleshooting mode access.
- Complete sign-in and prompts. Keep the relevant platform account available and be prepared for Activision’s possible mobile-number link requirement.
- Meet online requirements. Maintain a continuous connection and, on consoles, an active PlayStation Plus, Game Pass Essential or Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
- Launch during the correct window. Digital preorders can enter during Early Access from October 20; other players should use the worldwide launch date of October 23 unless the store shows a different regional release time.
Common access problems and what they mean
DMZ is locked after buying Standard
Confirm that the purchase completed on the same platform account used to launch the game. Then check for pending updates, restart the game and allow the store license to refresh. Standard includes the base game and DMZ; a Vault upgrade is not the fix for a missing license.
The game asks for a subscription
On a console, verify the platform’s online subscription. PlayStation 5 requires PlayStation Plus, Xbox Series X|S requires Game Pass Essential, and Nintendo Switch 2 requires Nintendo Switch Online for online modes. The Modern Warfare 4 purchase and the console subscription are separate transactions.
DMZ will not connect
Check the continuous internet connection first, because DMZ relies on online services and texture streaming. A temporary service outage, a platform network problem or an incomplete update can produce the same symptom. Once those are clear, retry from the fully updated game rather than an old suspended session.
PC security check fails
Review TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot in the system’s firmware settings. Both are listed PC security requirements. If you are unsure how your machine is configured, check the motherboard or PC manufacturer’s documentation before changing firmware options.
What is not an access requirement
The campaign’s sixteen missions are background content from the 2026 release and do not determine DMZ eligibility. You do not have to complete the campaign, buy Vault, own BlackCell or receive the Deployment Bonus before entering DMZ. Access is tied to owning an eligible Modern Warfare 4 edition, meeting the online and platform requirements, and launching after the applicable release window.
