Usually, no. PlayStation 5 has a separate GTA Online edition, so you do not need to buy Story Mode just to play multiplayer. If you already own a PS4 version of Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar’s announced upgrade path lets you move to the PS5 version at no additional cost from June 18, 2026. If you own nothing, choose between the $19.99 US standalone Online edition and the full GTAV bundle, whose observed US promotional price was $24.99 through October 22, 2026.
What you should buy depends on what you already own
There are three practical routes to GTA Online on PS5. Your existing PS4 entitlement, whether you want Story Mode, and your access to PlayStation Plus determine which one makes sense.

Buying a second copy is therefore not an automatic requirement. It is only necessary when you have no qualifying PS4 entitlement, no applicable catalog access, and want to play on PS5.

GTA Online standalone
The PS5 standalone listing includes GTA Online. It explicitly says that “GTAV: Story Mode can be purchased separately.” This is the least expensive one-time purchase when multiplayer is your only goal.

The observed US PlayStation Store price was $19.99 on October 18, 2026. That is a storefront observation for that date, not a permanent worldwide price. Your country, taxes, currency conversion, and later discounts can produce a different total.
Full GTAV PS5 edition
The full edition includes both GTAV: Story Mode and GTA Online. It is the correct choice if you want the single-player campaign, intend to switch between campaign and multiplayer, or find the bundle’s price close to the standalone edition.
On October 18, 2026, the US PlayStation Store showed a limited offer of $24.99, reduced from an original price of $49.99, with the offer scheduled to end October 22, 2026. A promotion can expire or be replaced at any time, so compare the price shown at checkout rather than relying on an old screenshot or article.
If you own GTAV on PS4, check the free upgrade first
Rockstar Games announced in a June 17, 2026 Newswire post that, beginning June 18, 2026, owners of any PS4 version of Grand Theft Auto V would be able to upgrade to the PS5 version at no additional cost. The announcement also covers owners of the digital Xbox One version for the Xbox Series X|S, but that part does not affect a PS5 purchase.

For a PS5 owner, the important point is that an existing PS4 GTAV entitlement can provide a no-cost PS5 upgrade. Do not purchase the standalone edition before checking whether your account already owns the PS4 game.
How to claim the PS5 version
- Turn on the PS5 and sign in to the PlayStation Network account that purchased or redeemed the PS4 copy.
- Open the PlayStation Store and search for Grand Theft Auto V or GTA Online.
- Open the product page and use the edition selector to display the PS5 version rather than the PS4 download.
- Check whether the price is shown as free, $0.00, or an equivalent no-charge upgrade.
- Select the PS5 version, add it to your library, and download it.
- Launch the PS5 edition and sign in to the Rockstar account associated with your existing character, if prompted.
The exact button labels can vary by region and by whether your PS4 copy was digital or disc-based. If the store still displays a purchase price, verify the account, confirm that the PS4 entitlement is visible in your library, and make sure you are viewing the PS5 product rather than a PS4 listing. Do not assume that owning a physical disc means the console can install the digital upgrade without the disc; follow the entitlement instructions shown for your edition.
Can you play GTA Online without buying Story Mode?
Yes. The PS5 standalone product is designed for that use. It contains GTA Online and treats Story Mode as a separate optional purchase. You can therefore create or migrate an Online character, play multiplayer activities, and ignore the campaign entirely.

Story Mode becomes relevant in two cases: you want the single-player campaign, or the full GTAV bundle is only slightly more expensive than standalone Online during a sale. The standalone edition does not become the full game automatically; buying it does not grant campaign access unless you later purchase Story Mode separately.

PlayStation Plus is still required for multiplayer
Owning the game and having a PS5 do not, by themselves, provide access to online multiplayer. PlayStation’s launch guidance states: “PlayStation Plus required to play (recurring fees apply).” That requirement applies to playing GTA Online as an online multiplayer service.
A PlayStation Plus subscription is separate from the game purchase. If you buy the standalone edition but do not have the required subscription, the game can be installed but multiplayer access will not be available until the subscription requirement is met. Confirm the current PlayStation Plus terms for your region before subscribing, because subscription tiers and pricing can change.
What if GTAV is in PlayStation Plus Extra?
The live US PlayStation Store page labels GTAV as included with PlayStation Plus Extra. Catalog inclusion is subscription-based rather than permanent ownership: the game can leave the catalog, and availability may differ by country. Check the listing in your own account and region before deciding that a separate purchase is unnecessary.
What happens to your PS4 progress?
Rockstar supports a one-time migration to PS5 for current players. The migration can transfer your GTA Online character and progression. Rockstar’s process also supports transferring Story Mode progress, while the PlayStation standalone listing specifically describes one-time migration for Online characters and progression.

Online migration considerations
- Use the Rockstar account connected to the character you want to move.
- Expect the transfer to be a one-time migration, not an endlessly synchronized copy between PS4 and PS5.
- Start the migration from the PS5 edition and follow the on-screen Rockstar account prompts.
- Review the destination character and progression before confirming, because the process is intended to move existing data rather than maintain two continually linked versions.
Story Mode migration
If you have campaign progress, use Rockstar’s supported transfer process when starting the PS5 Story Mode. The ability to transfer Story Mode progress is separate from whether you buy the standalone Online product: the standalone edition does not include the campaign to transfer until Story Mode is purchased.

The small difference between $19.99 standalone and a $24.99 bundle promotion is significant only if the promotion is still active and you value Story Mode. Once the offer ends, the full edition may return to a different price, so make the comparison on the day you buy.

“I bought GTAV on PS4 years ago.”
Do not buy anything immediately. Sign into the purchasing account, locate the PS4 entitlement, and check the PS5 edition for the no-cost upgrade. Rockstar’s announcement covers owners of any PS4 version, with the upgrade path beginning June 18, 2026.

Choose standalone Online if multiplayer is all you want. Choose the full edition when you want Story Mode or when a current bundle promotion costs only a few dollars more.

“I only want to play with friends.”
Buy or claim the edition that contains GTA Online, then make sure your PlayStation Plus requirement is satisfied. Story Mode is optional for this use.
“The store says I need to pay even though I own PS4 GTAV.”
Check that you are using the original purchasing account, that the store page is for PS5, and that your PS4 copy is recognized in your library. Region differences, disc ownership, and separate product listings can affect how the entitlement is displayed. If the upgrade still does not appear, use PlayStation Support or Rockstar Support rather than purchasing a duplicate copy.
“My PS4 character is missing on PS5.”
Confirm that you launched the PS5 edition, signed into the matching Rockstar account, and completed the one-time migration flow. Starting the wrong edition or using a different account can make the expected character and progression unavailable.

A quick purchase checklist
- Check your PlayStation library for a PS4 GTAV entitlement.
- If it exists, attempt the PS5 no-cost upgrade before opening a checkout page.
- If no entitlement exists, decide whether you need Story Mode.
- Compare the live price of standalone Online with the full GTAV bundle in your region.
- Check whether your PlayStation Plus subscription meets the current multiplayer requirement.
- After installation, use the supported one-time migration process if you want to bring PS4 progress to PS5.
The bottom line for PS5 players
You do not generally need to buy GTA V again to play GTA Online on PS5. A PS4 GTAV owner should first claim the announced no-cost PS5 upgrade. Someone without an eligible copy can buy the PS5 standalone Online edition and skip Story Mode, while the full GTAV edition is the better fit for campaign access or a close-price promotion. In every case, online multiplayer still requires PlayStation Plus, and store prices, catalog inclusion, and promotions depend on the date and region.
