Usually, yes—but the exact answer depends on the app. The official RPCS3 setup requires two separate inputs: official PlayStation 3 system firmware, identified as PS3UPDAT.PUP, and game dumps that you legally obtained. RPCS3 itself officially lists Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD, not Android. Android projects that use a PS3-emulation label are separate apps or ports, so they can set different requirements. For example, the Google Play listing for aPS3e says its download includes no games and that firmware must be supplied separately. Check the named app’s current documentation before downloading or converting anything.
The short answer: identify the emulator first
“Android emulator” can mean two different things. You might mean an Android app that emulates PlayStation 3 games on an Android phone or tablet, or you might mean RPCS3, the well-known PS3 emulator, attempted through an Android port. Those are not interchangeable products.

The official RPCS3 project describes desktop support for Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD. Its setup guide is therefore authoritative for RPCS3 on those platforms, not a universal specification for every Android application. A separate repository called RPCS3-Android describes its port as experimental and discontinued, lists Alpha-7 as its last release, and directs users toward RPCSX Android UI. That history is a warning not to assume that an APK carrying “RPCS3” in its name is an official, supported Android build.

- Does it require a PS3 system-firmware file?
- Does it require your own game dump, or can it run a format documented by that app?
- Does its developer document Android support for your device and Android version?
For the official RPCS3 workflow, the answer to the first two questions is yes. For an Android app, the answer must come from that app’s own current instructions.
What the official RPCS3 setup requires
Official PS3 system firmware
The RPCS3 setup guide states that RPCS3 requires official PlayStation 3 system firmware. The file is identified in the guide as PS3UPDAT.PUP. Firmware is the console operating system component used by the emulator; it is not a game and it does not provide a library of playable titles.
In RPCS3, firmware installation is a separate step from adding games. Installing a game dump without installing the firmware can leave the emulator unable to initialize the required system software. Conversely, installing firmware alone does not give you a game to launch.
Legally obtained game dumps
RPCS3 also expects game dumps. A dump is a copy of a game’s data prepared for use by an emulator. The setup guide tells users to add legally owned game dumps after installing firmware. The guide does not grant permission to download someone else’s dump, and ownership, copying and archival rules vary by country.

Do not treat a website offering “PS3 ISOs,” “preconfigured firmware” or a single package containing dozens of games as an official source. Besides legal concerns, unofficial packages can be modified, incomplete or bundled with malware. Use firmware obtained through the official Sony or console-owner process described by the RPCS3 documentation, and make your own decisions under the law that applies where you live.
What RPCS3 does not officially promise on Android
The official project platform description lists Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD. Android is not listed there. That means you should not describe RPCS3 itself as having an official Android release based solely on the existence of an Android port or an APK with a similar name.
How Android PS3 apps differ
aPS3e: a listing-specific requirement
The Google Play listing reviewed for aPS3e says that the app download contains no games and that firmware is separate. In practical terms, a person installing that app should expect to provide game data and a firmware file rather than receiving either one from the app package.

That statement applies to the listing named aPS3e. It does not prove that every Android app uses the same firmware file, accepts the same dump layout, or even requires firmware in the same way. Read the app’s own help pages, release notes and in-app instructions before moving files to a phone.

RPCS3-Android and other ports
The separate RPCS3-Android repository labels its project experimental and discontinued, identifies Alpha-7 as its last release and points toward RPCSX Android UI. A discontinued port may still start on some devices, but its documentation and compatibility information are not evidence of current support. It is also not a reason to assume that a current Android application is maintained by the official RPCS3 project.
Other Android apps may be unrelated projects that borrow a familiar name, use a different emulation core or support only a subset of PS3 software. Their file pickers, firmware checks and game formats can differ. If an app does not publish a clear requirement, treat the requirement as not established rather than guessing that an RPCS3 procedure will work.

What “firmware” and “game files” mean
Firmware is the PS3 system software
Firmware supplies the operating-system layer that a PS3 emulator needs to reproduce console behavior. It is normally a single update package such as PS3UPDAT.PUP for the RPCS3 installation process. It is not interchangeable with Android’s operating-system image, a BIOS from another console or a game archive.

Game data contains the software for a particular PS3 title. The exact way an Android app expects that data—folder structure, archive, disc image or another documented layout—is app-specific. Do not rename files or convert them merely because an online guide for a different emulator uses another format. If the app’s documentation does not name a format, there is no reliable universal answer.

Firmware and games are separate inputs
Obtaining one does not replace the other. A firmware installer cannot create a playable copy of a game, and a game dump cannot substitute for the system firmware that RPCS3 requires. Some front ends may hide the distinction by asking for both during first-run setup, but the underlying roles remain separate.
Legal and safe ways to prepare the files
- Read the emulator’s own documentation. Confirm the exact app name, supported Android version, firmware requirement and accepted game format. Do this before downloading large files.
- Obtain official firmware through an authorized source. The RPCS3 guide directs users to legally obtain firmware from Sony or their own console. Follow the current instructions for your region and do not use a repackaged file from an unknown site.
- Create or use a dump of a game you legally own. Follow a lawful workflow appropriate to your console, media and jurisdiction. The emulator does not supply a legal entitlement to someone else’s game.
- Scan and verify files before transferring them. Keep the original filename where the app requires it, compare checksums when the developer publishes them, and scan downloads with your device’s security tools. A file that installs but fails verification may be incomplete or altered.
- Transfer files using a controlled method. Use a USB connection, a trusted local network or encrypted storage. Avoid granting an unknown APK broad access to contacts, messages or accessibility controls just to import a game.
- Install firmware first when the app instructs you to do so. In the official RPCS3 flow, firmware installation precedes adding game dumps. An Android app may present a different interface, so follow its labels rather than copying desktop steps blindly.
- Add one game and test the import. A single known-good title makes it easier to distinguish a bad dump from an emulator or device problem.
Common failure points on Android
The app says firmware is missing
Check that you selected the actual firmware package required by that app, not an Android system image or a game archive. For RPCS3, the documented filename is PS3UPDAT.PUP. If an Android app uses a different path or expects an extracted file, use its instructions; do not assume that changing the extension will help.
The game does not appear in the library
Verify that the dump is complete and stored in the location the app scans. Some apps require you to choose a directory rather than a single file. Re-read the app’s import instructions, then test with one legally obtained title. If the app never documents the accepted layout, its compatibility is unknown rather than a problem you can solve by trying random extensions.
An APK claims to be RPCS3 but behaves differently
Compare the developer name, release notes and platform statement with the official RPCS3 project. The official project lists desktop operating systems; an Android APK should be treated as a separate project unless the official maintainers explicitly identify it. A port marked experimental or discontinued may lack fixes, current documentation or security maintenance.
Installation succeeds but games do not run
A successful import is not proof of game compatibility. The available project descriptions do not establish a universal Android device matrix, performance level or list of working titles. Problems can result from the phone’s hardware, Android version, graphics drivers, emulator build, firmware installation or the dump itself. Record the app version, device model, Android version and exact error before seeking help from that project’s documented support channel.
The app asks for suspicious permissions or a paid “firmware unlock”
Firmware is a file requirement, not a reason to grant unrelated permissions. Stop if an APK requests contacts, SMS, accessibility or device-administrator access without a clear technical explanation. Do not pay a third-party site for a “special” firmware package or a bundle of copyrighted games.
What you can and cannot conclude about performance
The cited documentation does not provide a current phone-by-phone compatibility table, frame-rate benchmark, universal game-success rate or minimum Android specification for PS3 emulation. Therefore, having the correct firmware and a valid dump does not guarantee that a particular phone will run a title at playable speed.
Performance and compatibility can vary by emulator build, graphics-driver support, thermal limits, memory, game and firmware combination. A listing that installs on your device establishes only that the package can be installed; it does not establish that every PS3 game will boot or remain stable.
A decision checklist before you download anything
- Name the app: Is it official RPCS3 on a listed desktop platform, a discontinued Android port, aPS3e or another Android project?
- Confirm platform status: Does the developer explicitly support your Android version and device?
- Confirm inputs: Does the documentation require
PS3UPDAT.PUP, another firmware package, game dumps, or a documented combination? - Confirm legality: Can you obtain the firmware and game data through a lawful process where you live?
- Confirm maintenance: Are the release notes current, or is the project labeled experimental or discontinued?
- Plan for testing: Can you test one known-good dump and remove the app cleanly if it fails?
If any of these answers is missing, postpone the download until the developer provides clear documentation. Guessing at files is more likely to produce errors or security risks than a working setup.
Bottom line for Android users
For official RPCS3, you need official PS3 system firmware and legally obtained game dumps, and Android is not among the desktop platforms listed by the project. An Android app may follow a similar model, but it is a separate project whose requirements must be checked individually. The aPS3e listing reviewed here explicitly says that games are not included and firmware is separate; that statement should not be generalized to every Android emulator. Use official documentation, supply only lawfully obtained files, and do not assume that the presence of an APK guarantees current support or playable performance.
