Usually, no. Most free-to-play games downloaded from the PlayStation Store can be played online without a PlayStation Plus membership. Sony specifically lists Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone as examples. The important qualification is that the rule is title-specific: open the current PlayStation Store listing and check whether it says PlayStation Plus is required for online play.
That exception applies to the game’s business model, not simply to the fact that its download button shows a zero price. For most games you buy on disc or download from the Store, Sony says a Plus subscription is required for online multiplayer.

The short answer
You generally do not need PlayStation Plus to play a free-to-play PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 game online. Sony’s own FAQ names Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone as free-to-play games that do not require membership.
There is no published, universal percentage or complete catalog proving that every free-to-play title is exempt. Sony’s support guidance is to check the individual PlayStation Store page. That page is the final authority for the title, edition and online mode you are about to use.

Why free-to-play games are treated differently
“Free-to-play” describes the game’s business model. You can download and start the game without buying the base game, while the publisher may offer optional purchases inside it. The presence of online features or optional purchases does not, by itself, turn a free-to-play title into a game that needs Plus.
Sony’s published examples show the practical result: you can play the online versions of Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone without paying for a PlayStation Plus membership. Their being online games does not change their free-to-play classification.
Do not extend those examples into a guarantee for every game with a free download. A Store listing can identify a different business model, a special edition or a separate online component. Sony therefore tells players to check each title individually.

- Open the game’s PlayStation Store listing. Search for the exact title on your PS4, PS5 or the PlayStation Store interface you use. Make sure you have selected the intended game rather than a soundtrack, add-on or similarly named edition.
- Identify the platform and edition. Confirm whether the page is for PS4, PS5 or both. If several editions appear, inspect the one you intend to launch; do not transfer an online-play requirement from a different edition.
- Read the online-play information. Look for the part of the listing that states whether PlayStation Plus is required for online play. Sony’s support wording is to check the Store to see if Plus is required.
- Match the requirement to the mode you want. The relevant question is online multiplayer. A page can contain several modes or products, so check the mode and edition rather than relying only on the title’s price.
- Use the current page when the answer matters. Policies and Store pages can change. If an older forum post, video or friend says a subscription is or is not needed, compare that claim with the current listing.
This check is more reliable than trying to infer the answer from a game’s popularity, publisher, graphics, age or the presence of in-game purchases.
Examples Sony identifies as not requiring Plus
Fortnite
Sony lists Fortnite as a free-to-play example that does not require a membership. Its online matches therefore fall under the free-to-play exception described in Sony’s FAQ.
Apex Legends
Apex Legends is another Sony example. Its online nature does not create a Plus requirement when the game is offered under the free-to-play model identified by Sony.

Call of Duty: Warzone
Sony also names Call of Duty: Warzone. This example is useful because it demonstrates that a large, online-focused game can still be playable without Plus when it is the free-to-play product listed by Sony.

These are examples, not a promise that every product with a related name has the same terms. A separate paid release, expansion or edition can have a different Store entry and a different requirement.
How purchased games differ
Sony’s support guidance says that, for most PS4 and PS5 games played in online multiplayer, you need a PlayStation Plus subscription. That covers games bought on disc as well as games downloaded from the Store.
The distinction is not “physical versus digital.” Both can be purchased games, and both commonly require Plus for online multiplayer. The distinction is primarily whether the title is a free-to-play product or a game you bought.

The requirement discussed here concerns online multiplayer. Sony’s statement does not mean that a Plus subscription is needed simply to launch every purchased game or to use every non-multiplayer feature. If a game offers several ways to play, use the Store description to determine which mode is covered.

PS4 and PS5: does the console generation change the answer?
No general change is identified between the two generations. Sony’s support wording expressly refers to “most PS4 and PS5 games” when explaining the Plus requirement for online multiplayer, while its free-to-play examples are presented as games that do not require membership.
Still, confirm the edition shown in the Store. A title may have separate PS4 and PS5 pages, bundles or products with similar names. The safest answer for your console is the requirement displayed on the page for the version you are installing and the mode you intend to use.

A free-to-play game may work without Plus, but you might still choose a subscription for other benefits. Sony’s support information lists these included features:
- Online multiplayer for games that require it. This is the benefit that matters when a purchased game gates its online mode behind Plus.
- Monthly games. Plus includes monthly games as part of the subscription benefits.
- Discounts. Members receive discounts offered through the service.
- Share Play. The service includes Share Play.
- 100 GB of cloud storage. Plus includes 100 GB of cloud storage.
Those benefits are separate from the access rule for a particular free-to-play title. If your only goal is to join matches in a free-to-play game that Sony identifies as not requiring membership, buying Plus is not necessary for that purpose. If you also play purchased games online or want the other listed benefits, the subscription may serve those separate needs.
Common mistakes that lead to the wrong answer
Confusing a free download with a free-to-play game
The word “free” on a Store page is not enough evidence by itself. Identify whether the product is the free-to-play game Sony’s rule addresses, then check the online-play notice. A temporary offer, a bundle component or a separate product can have different conditions.
Assuming every online game needs Plus
Sony’s examples directly disprove that assumption. Online functionality and a Plus requirement are related but not identical: free-to-play games can provide online matches without membership.
Assuming no Plus is needed for every product in a franchise
A free-to-play entry and a separately sold game can sit beside each other in the Store. Check the exact product page, not just the franchise name.
Relying on an old list
Third-party lists can become outdated. Sony’s current Store listing is the appropriate check when a game’s status is uncertain.
Checking only the game price
Price tells you whether you are being asked to buy the base product at that moment; it does not replace the online-play requirement notice. Read the part of the page that addresses PlayStation Plus.
If you are blocked from online play
Work through the checks in this order:
- Reopen the exact Store page. Confirm the title, platform and edition.
- Read the Plus notice again. Determine whether the page says membership is required for online play.
- Check the mode. Make sure you are trying to use the free-to-play product or the specific online mode you examined, rather than a separately sold game or add-on.
- Compare the page with your assumption. If the listing requires Plus, a membership is the expected requirement for that online mode. If it does not, the issue may be specific to the account, game or console rather than a general rule about free games.
- Recheck after a Store or game change. When a title’s product page or edition changes, use the current information rather than an earlier screenshot or guide.
This process avoids the two most common errors: treating every free download as exempt, and treating every online game as subscription-gated.
A quick decision framework
Ask three questions:
- What is the business model? Is this a free-to-play title, or did you buy the game?
- Which online mode are you opening? The Plus rule is about online multiplayer, not an abstract label attached to the entire console.
- What does the current Store page say? Use the listing for the exact PS4 or PS5 product as the deciding check.
If the answers are “free-to-play,” “its online multiplayer,” and “the listing does not require Plus,” you should be able to play that title without a membership. If the game was purchased and the listing requires Plus, you will need the subscription for its online multiplayer. When the answers conflict or the product is unclear, the Store listing takes precedence over a general rule.
