What you are paying for
There are two separate parts to the cost structure:
- Nintendo Switch Online membership: This is the required membership and is sold separately. The price and available plans can vary by country, currency, tax rules, and Nintendo’s current offerings.
- Nintendo Music access: Nintendo says members can use Nintendo Music at no additional cost. There is no second Nintendo Music subscription described in the official membership information.

Do you need to own a Nintendo Switch console?
Nintendo’s stated requirements identify a compatible smart device, Nintendo Account, internet access, and Nintendo Switch Online membership. They do not list ownership of a Nintendo Switch console as a separate requirement for the Nintendo Music app.
That means a person can evaluate the app based on the supported smart-device and account requirements rather than assuming that a console purchase is necessary. You should still use the same Nintendo Account that holds the Nintendo Switch Online membership. If your account, membership, device, or region does not meet Nintendo’s conditions, the app may not provide access even if you own a console.
Console ownership and membership ownership are different questions. A console can be useful for Nintendo’s broader ecosystem, but the official Nintendo Music requirement is the membership connected to your Nintendo Account, not a statement that a physical Switch must be present.

Nintendo’s October 31, 2024 launch announcement from Nintendo Canada says members can stream songs directly from the app. Streaming requires an internet connection and uses data from your smart device’s connection or Wi-Fi.

Downloaded offline listening
The same announcement says members can download songs to the app for offline listening. This is useful when you expect limited connectivity, such as during travel or in areas with unreliable service. Downloading does not remove the membership requirement for accessing Nintendo Music; it is a listening mode offered within the member service.
Catalog scope
Nintendo described the launch catalog as covering nearly 40 years of Nintendo history. That description refers to the historical span of the available soundtrack catalog, not a promise that every game, album, track, or region-specific release is included. Catalog availability can change, and the app is the place to see what is currently offered.
How to get started
- Confirm regional availability. Open Nintendo’s current Nintendo Music Support information and check that your country appears on the supported-country list. Nintendo says more regions may be added, so an earlier unavailable status can change.
- Check your membership. Make sure the Nintendo Account you intend to use has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. If you have more than one Nintendo Account, verify the membership on the account you will sign in with.
- Use a compatible smart device. Confirm that your phone or other supported smart device meets Nintendo’s current compatibility information before troubleshooting account access.
- Install and open Nintendo Music. Download the official app for your device, open it, and follow its sign-in prompts. The app must be connected to the Nintendo Account associated with the membership.
- Allow the app to verify access. Keep the device online while the app checks your account and membership. If access is denied, confirm the account and regional requirements before assuming the app is malfunctioning.
- Choose a listening method. Stream while connected, or use the app’s download option for songs you want available offline. Complete downloads while you have a reliable connection.

If you are deciding whether to subscribe only for the music app, treat Nintendo Switch Online as the purchase decision. Nintendo Music is an included benefit, not an independently purchasable tier. The app opens, but it says you are not eligible
First confirm that you signed in with the Nintendo Account carrying the active Nintendo Switch Online membership. A different account on the same smart device will not automatically inherit another account’s membership. Next, verify that Nintendo Music is officially available in your country.
You have a membership but cannot complete setup
Check the internet connection and confirm that the smart device is compatible. Setup requires online access so the app can associate your account with the service. If the device is unsupported or the region is not listed, changing network settings will not create eligibility.

Use Nintendo Music’s download function while online. Nintendo’s launch announcement specifically describes downloading songs to the app for offline listening. Keep in mind that offline playback is a feature of the member service, not a way to bypass the membership check.
Your country is not listed
Nintendo maintains a supported-country list and says the list may expand. If your country is absent, the safest conclusion is that Nintendo Music is not currently confirmed for your region. Recheck Nintendo’s current support page rather than relying on a store listing or an announcement written for another market.
