Nintendo says online features in The Duskbloods require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, sold separately, plus a Nintendo Account and an internet connection. You also need a Nintendo Switch 2, because the game is exclusive to that console. The game is scheduled for 2026, although Nintendo and FromSoftware have not published a specific launch date in the cited product information.
What you need for online play
| Requirement | What the official information establishes | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online | Nintendo states that membership is required for online features and is sold separately. | Buying the game alone does not provide online access. |
| Nintendo Account | Nintendo lists an account requirement alongside the membership requirement. | The player profile used to play must be associated with a Nintendo Account. |
| Internet connection | Nintendo says internet access is required for the online features. | Your Switch 2 must be connected to the internet when you use those features. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo describes The Duskbloods as available exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. | The original Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite are not the target platform for this release. |
| Game software | The online mode is part of The Duskbloods, a title scheduled for 2026. | You still need to purchase or otherwise obtain the game separately from the subscription. |
Why the subscription is necessary
Nintendo’s product page uses the wording: “Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately) and Nintendo Account required for online features.” That is a direct service requirement, not an optional recommendation. The membership is the access authorization for Nintendo’s online service; it is separate from the game license.

Consequently, a player can own The Duskbloods and still be unable to enter its online features if the account has no active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Conversely, having a membership does not grant the game itself. Both parts—the software and the service subscription—are needed for the online portion.

Console, account and network requirements
Nintendo Switch 2 is mandatory
Nintendo identifies the game as exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. FromSoftware also describes it as developed for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. This is a platform requirement rather than an accessory requirement: the available information does not identify a special controller, camera, headset or other peripheral as necessary.
If you currently own an original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite or an OLED-model Switch, those systems do not satisfy the stated platform requirement. You would need Nintendo Switch 2 hardware to play the release described by Nintendo’s product page.
A Nintendo Account must be available
The account requirement matters even if the console is shared. The user profile that attempts to use online features needs access to a Nintendo Account, and that account must be the one covered by the Nintendo Switch Online membership. Before launch, verify that the intended player profile is linked to the correct account rather than assuming that a console-wide subscription will automatically cover every profile.
If several people use one console, determine in advance which Nintendo Accounts will play online and how the membership will be assigned to them. The cited product information confirms that an account is required but does not state how a specific subscription plan handles multiple users.
An internet connection is required during online use
Nintendo says internet access is required for the online features. A connection is therefore needed when searching for or joining online sessions and while participating in the game’s networked activities. The requirement is separate from the Nintendo Switch Online subscription: a valid membership cannot substitute for an internet connection.
How many people can play online?
Nintendo’s current product specification lists online play for 1–8 players. FromSoftware separately describes The Duskbloods as a PvPvE multiplayer game in which up to eight players compete against one another and challenging enemies. The two descriptions establish the same upper limit, with Nintendo’s figure identified as a current product-page specification accessed in 2026 and FromSoftware’s description published in 2025.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
“PvPvE” means the match combines player-versus-player conflict with player-versus-environment threats. Other players are opponents, while the game’s hostile creatures or encounters are additional dangers. Eight is the maximum stated by the developers; it should not be read as a guarantee that every activity always contains eight human participants. The available information does not define minimum lobby sizes, matchmaking rules, private-room limits or whether vacant slots are filled by computer-controlled participants.

Set up your system for online play
- Use Nintendo Switch 2. Confirm that the console you plan to use is the Switch 2 model, since Nintendo lists the game as exclusive to it.
- Create or select the player profile. On the console, choose the profile that will launch the game. Make sure that profile is linked to the Nintendo Account you intend to use online.
- Connect the console to the internet. In the console’s system settings, open the internet settings and run the connection test. Resolve any connection failure before troubleshooting the game itself.
- Obtain Nintendo Switch Online separately. Sign in with the Nintendo Account that will play and activate an available Nintendo Switch Online membership for that account. Nintendo’s product page does not identify a required tier or price, so use the options shown for your region.
- Install the game. Purchase or redeem The Duskbloods separately from the subscription. A membership does not include the game license.
- Check the launch status. Nintendo and FromSoftware list the game for 2026 but do not give a launch day in the cited information. Online access cannot be tested until the software is released and its servers or matchmaking service are available.
- Start the online feature after release. Launch the game with the Nintendo Account that has the active membership, keep the console connected, and select the game’s online or multiplayer option. The exact menu names may not be published until the final software is available.
Can you play without Nintendo Switch Online?
You cannot use the game’s online features without the required membership. Nintendo’s wording applies specifically to online features, so it does not establish whether every part of The Duskbloods can be played offline, whether there is a solo mode, or whether any local multiplayer option exists.
That distinction is important. “No Nintendo Switch Online” means no access to the Nintendo service required for online play; it does not prove that the entire game becomes unusable. Nintendo and FromSoftware have not, in the cited pages, described the scope of offline content, local play, tutorials, practice areas or other modes. Do not buy the game assuming an offline campaign—or assuming there is none—until Nintendo publishes those details.
| Situation | What can be concluded |
|---|---|
| You own the game but have no Nintendo Switch Online membership | Online features are not available under Nintendo’s stated requirement. |
| You have Nintendo Switch Online but no Nintendo Account linked to the playing profile | The account requirement is not met; link the intended profile and account. |
| You have the game, membership and account but no internet connection | The online features still cannot operate because Nintendo requires internet access. |
| You have an original Switch-family console rather than Switch 2 | The stated exclusive-platform requirement is not met. |
| You want to know about offline or local modes | The cited official information does not establish those modes. |
Save Data Cloud is not supported
Nintendo’s UK product information says the software does not support Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup. This is separate from the membership requirement for online matches. Paying for Nintendo Switch Online does not mean that The Duskbloods save data will automatically be backed up through Save Data Cloud.
Because cloud backup is not supported, take particular care when changing consoles, deleting software or managing local save data. The cited information does not describe an alternative transfer or recovery method for this title, so do not treat a Switch 2 replacement or reset as automatically recoverable through the cloud service.

Troubleshooting an online-access problem
The game says a membership is required
Confirm that the Nintendo Account shown for the active player profile is the account with the Nintendo Switch Online membership. On a shared console, switching profiles can switch accounts as well. If the membership was recently purchased or changed, restart the console and sign in again before testing the online option.

The membership is active but the game cannot connect
Run the console’s internet connection test, then retry another online service to determine whether the problem is a general network failure. If the console is offline, Nintendo’s separate internet requirement has not been met even though the subscription is valid. Also check for service-maintenance notices from Nintendo before changing local settings.
The game is unavailable on your console
Check the hardware model first. Nintendo lists The Duskbloods as a Switch 2 exclusive, so an original Switch, Switch Lite or OLED-model Switch is not the platform identified for this release. A membership cannot make software compatible with unsupported hardware.
You expected cloud backup
Do not interpret the presence of Nintendo Switch Online as confirmation that every game supports Save Data Cloud. Nintendo UK specifically excludes this software from that backup feature. Keep local-save management and any officially documented transfer process in mind when planning a console move.

What to budget and verify before release
There are two separate purchases to account for: the game and Nintendo Switch Online membership. If you do not already own Nintendo Switch 2, the console is a third requirement because of the game’s exclusive platform status. The cited pages do not provide launch pricing for the game, the console, or membership, and they do not identify a mandatory subscription tier.
Before the 2026 release, verify four items in your region: the game’s final launch date, the Nintendo Switch Online plan that enables online play, the membership price and renewal terms, and any final information about offline or local modes. Those details can be updated by Nintendo without changing the basic requirement already stated on the product page.
