Yes, if you connect over the internet; no, if you use supported local wireless play. On Nintendo Switch 2, Pokémon Scarlet, Pokémon Violet and Pokémon Legends: Z-A separate nearby-console play from internet play. Battles, trades, exploration and raids with people who are elsewhere require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership in the cited games. Players in the same room can use local wireless without that subscription, provided the game supports the mode and every console has compatible software.
The rule is game- and mode-specific, so the connection option you choose matters more than the console model.

Nintendo describes local communication as the option for players nearby, such as in the same room, and internet communication as the option for players farther away. Selecting the wrong option is the most common reason a player is prompted for a subscription when they expected local play.

What works online
Nintendo’s support instructions for Scarlet and Violet list three prerequisites for internet communication: a Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch console, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and an internet connection. That requirement applies when you connect to players who are not physically nearby. It is not waived because you own the game or because the other player already subscribes.

With internet communication, two to four players with a copy of Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet can explore together, battle, trade Pokémon and challenge Tera Raid Battles. The subscription requirement covers the network connection; each participant still needs compatible game software and the game’s current update.
How to choose local or internet communication
- Start Scarlet or Violet and open the in-game communication or Poké Portal options.
- Choose Local communication when everyone is nearby and connected through the local wireless feature.
- Choose Internet communication for friends in another home or for online features involving distant players.
- If you select internet communication, sign in as requested and make sure the console has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a working internet connection.
Local communication is the no-subscription route. It does not turn a distant friend into a local player: the consoles must be close enough for the game’s local wireless connection, and all players must use the same compatible software update.
Activities available locally
Scarlet and Violet support the same broad group of multiplayer activities through local wireless as through the internet: joint exploration, battles, trades and Tera Raid Battles. The practical difference is proximity and networking, not a separate local-only version of those activities. Nintendo’s listing describes two to four players for these features.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A on Switch 2
Modes listed for the Switch 2 edition
Nintendo’s product listing for the Switch 2 edition identifies three player configurations: single-system play for one player, local wireless for two to four players and online play for two to four players. The listing says a Nintendo Switch Online membership, sold separately, and a Nintendo Account are required for online features.

The Pokémon Company’s announcement describes Link Battles in the same two ways: nearby players can connect locally, while distant players connect through the internet. It explicitly says a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for battles via the internet.
What that means in practice
- Playing alone: The listed single-system mode is one player, so no subscription is needed for that mode.
- Playing with someone nearby: Use local wireless for two to four players. The cited listing does not identify a Nintendo Switch Online subscription as a requirement for this mode.
- Playing with someone elsewhere: Use online play. Each participant should expect the Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Account requirements stated by Nintendo.
Do not assume that owning the Switch 2 edition automatically grants online access. The game license and the network service are separate; the product listing says the membership is sold separately.
Local wireless versus internet: what you need
Local wireless checklist
- Put the players in the same physical area; local communication is intended for nearby consoles.
- Use the compatible Pokémon title on each participating console, following that game’s requirements for copies or guest participation.
- Install the current game update on every console. Nintendo’s support material says local players need matching updates.
- Choose the local communication option inside the game rather than an internet option.
- Keep the consoles within a practical wireless range and avoid suspending the game while a session is forming.
A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is not identified as a prerequisite for the local-wireless modes described for Scarlet/Violet and Legends: Z-A. You may still need the console’s ordinary wireless features enabled, but that is different from paying for Nintendo’s online service.

- Use a stable internet connection on each console.
- Make sure every player has the compatible game and current software update.
- For Scarlet and Violet, have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership before selecting internet communication.
- For Legends: Z-A, have the Nintendo Switch Online membership and Nintendo Account required for online features.
- Choose the internet communication or online mode in the game, then follow its lobby, invitation or matchmaking prompts.
If one player lacks the required membership, the group cannot replace that player’s internet connection with another participant’s subscription. The requirement is tied to the account and console using the online feature.

Do you need a subscription to trade or battle?
Trading
In Scarlet and Violet, trading can be done with nearby players through local wireless, so a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not needed when the traders are together. Trading with a player in another location uses internet communication and therefore requires the active membership listed by Nintendo.
Battling
The same split applies to Scarlet and Violet battles: local battles use local wireless, while battles with distant players use the internet. In Legends: Z-A, the official announcement specifically calls out internet Link Battles as requiring a paid membership; nearby Link Battles use local connection instead.
Tera Raid Battles and exploration
Scarlet and Violet’s two-to-four-player exploration and Tera Raid features are available through either online or local wireless connection. Select the local option for a nearby group and the internet option for distant participants. The connection choice determines whether the subscription is needed.

Updates, software and account requirements
Network access cannot compensate for incompatible software. Nintendo’s support information requires the relevant game and current software, and says local players need matching updates. Before troubleshooting a subscription prompt, update every participating copy and restart the game after the update finishes.

Legends: Z-A has an additional account condition: Nintendo’s product listing says a Nintendo Account is required for online features. The listing also states that Nintendo Switch Online is sold separately. Scarlet and Violet’s cited prerequisite is an active membership plus an internet connection; use the game’s current on-screen instructions for any account sign-in it requests.
“Current” means the update available for your edition and console at the time you play. A Switch 2 edition and a Nintendo Switch edition can have different software packages or feature notes, so check that every participant is launching the compatible edition listed by the game.

The game asks for Nintendo Switch Online during a local session
- Exit the lobby and verify that every player is physically nearby.
- Reopen the communication menu and choose Local communication, not internet communication.
- Confirm that all consoles have the same current game update.
- Restart the game on each console if a previous online session left the menu in internet mode.
If the game still reports that the activity is online-only, that particular feature may not support local wireless. Check the title’s current player-mode listing rather than assuming every multiplayer activity has both connection types.
A distant friend cannot join
- Confirm that the host selected internet communication or online play.
- Check Nintendo Switch Online status on every participating account; the cited online features require an active membership.
- Verify internet access and complete any requested Nintendo Account sign-in, particularly for Legends: Z-A.
- Update the game on every console and retry the lobby or battle search.
- If the lobby is visible but the session fails, close and reopen the game before creating a new room.
One player can connect but another cannot
Compare the failing player’s game edition, update version, account sign-in and subscription status with the host’s settings. A single outdated copy can prevent a local group from joining, while a missing membership can block one participant from an internet lobby even when the host is subscribed.
What about Pokémon UNITE and other Pokémon games?
Do not apply the Scarlet/Violet or Legends: Z-A rule to every Pokémon release. Pokémon Support maintains a separate official FAQ addressing whether a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for Pokémon UNITE. Free-to-play titles and future releases can use different network policies, so check the current support page for the exact game and mode before purchasing a subscription.
The safest method is to identify three things in the game’s official player information: whether the activity is online or local wireless, whether the title is free-to-play or paid, and whether Nintendo lists a membership or account as a prerequisite. A Pokémon game that offers local multiplayer may still require a subscription for its separate internet matchmaking features.
Decision guide before you start
- Are all players in the same room? Try local wireless first; the cited local modes do not require Nintendo Switch Online.
- Are any players remote? Plan on internet communication and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for the cited Scarlet/Violet and Legends: Z-A features.
- Which game and edition are you using? Confirm its player-mode listing, especially for Legends: Z-A on Switch 2.
- Are the copies updated? Bring every console to the current compatible version before creating a lobby.
- Does the title specify an account? Legends: Z-A lists a Nintendo Account for online features; follow the exact prompt shown by other games.
For the games covered here, the answer is therefore conditional rather than a blanket yes or no: Nintendo Switch Online is the requirement for internet Pokémon multiplayer, while supported local wireless multiplayer works without the paid service.
