For cruise calls in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro, euros are the practical local currency. Albania is the main exception: its currency is the lek. If Albania is on your itinerary, plan to use a card where accepted or get a modest amount of lek rather than assuming euros will work everywhere.
Which currency should you bring?
Check the countries on your itinerary: “Adriatic cruise” does not describe one fixed route, and the currency choice changes if your ship calls in Albania.

| Croatia | Euro | Croatia’s official currency is the euro; see Baška tourist information. |
| Montenegro | Euro | Montenegro is outside the EU but uses the euro de facto. Its tourism authority describes the euro as the country’s official means of payment: currency and payment methods. |
| Albania | Lek (ALL) | The lek is Albania’s national currency. Do not count on euro acceptance at every port business. Bank of Albania exchange rates. |
How much cash should you carry?
For Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro, you do not need to exchange into another currency for the countries listed here. A modest reserve of euros is still useful for small purchases or a merchant that does not take cards. There is no port-wide rule that every shop, taxi or café accepts cards.

In Croatia, local tourism information says card acceptance depends on whether the merchant indicates it, with ATMs in major cities and tourist places. A Croatia-focused cruise operator advises carrying enough euros for meals and drinks on some smaller islands, while noting card and ATM access in Dubrovnik, Split and Hvar. Treat that as practical operator advice, not a guarantee for a particular business or a claim that island shops are generally cash-only. Cruise Croatia: currency in Croatia.
What to do on an Albania call
Use a card where the business accepts it, or obtain a modest amount of lek if your plans involve cash spending. The Bank of Albania displayed a reference rate of EUR 1 = ALL 91.98 on 2026-10-02. That dated central-bank rate is not a retail exchange quote and does not promise the rate or fees you will receive. Bank of Albania exchange rates.

The available official information establishes the lek as Albania’s currency, but not whether any specific cruise-port business will accept euros. Ask before relying on euro cash, or use lek or a payment card instead.

- Check your card issuer’s foreign transaction fee, exchange markup, ATM withdrawal fee and withdrawal limits.
- Find out how your issuer treats cash advances; an ATM withdrawal on a credit card may be treated differently from an ordinary purchase.
- If a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, compare its displayed conversion and fees with your issuer’s terms. No single choice is best for every card and transaction.
For euro payments within the EU, EU rules say the payment should not cost more than an equivalent domestic electronically processed euro payment. That does not mean your bank must waive foreign transaction, ATM, cash-advance or currency-conversion fees. European Commission: using the euro.

Simple payment plan for port days
- Check the itinerary. For calls in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro, plan around euros. For an Albania call, include lek access or a card as well.
- Bring a backup. Carry a modest amount of cash in the relevant local currency alongside a payment card, rather than relying on just one method.
- Match cash to the stop. A small island or a day away from a major center may make cash more useful; the available guidance does not establish universal cash-only rules.
- Review the transaction before accepting. Check the currency and conversion shown on the screen, then weigh it against your card issuer’s fees and terms.
