No—an HDMI cable is not required just to set up a new TV. You need one when you want to connect a device that sends video or audio over HDMI, such as a game console, cable box, streaming device, or computer. A compatible soundbar may also connect through HDMI. Check your TV’s included-parts list and quick setup guide before buying a cable; what comes in the box depends on the model.
When do you need an HDMI cable?
Think about the signal path, not whether the TV is new. A television’s power, initial setup, and built-in network functions do not by themselves require an HDMI cable. An HDMI cable is needed when you connect an external source to an HDMI input on the TV, or when a compatible audio setup uses HDMI ARC.

- Common HDMI sources: game consoles, cable or satellite boxes, streaming devices, Blu-ray players, and computers with an HDMI output.
- Audio: a compatible soundbar or other audio device can connect to the TV’s HDMI ARC port. ARC support depends on the ports and both devices; check their labels and manuals.
Samsung’s setup guidance treats connecting external devices as a separate step from power, network, and initial TV setup, and says included items vary by model. It directs owners to the model’s included-parts list rather than establishing that every TV box contains an HDMI cable. Samsung’s TV setup guide is a useful place to check the package contents for your model.

Does a new TV come with an HDMI cable?
There is no universal answer: included accessories depend on the specific TV model. Check the product’s included-parts list, quick setup guide, or the box inventory. If no cable is listed, do not assume one is included; if you are only using the TV’s built-in functions, you may not need to buy one.

How to connect an HDMI device to your TV
- Check that the source device has an HDMI output and the TV has an available HDMI input. Note the input’s label or number.
- With the devices positioned for use, connect one end of the cable to the source’s HDMI output and the other end to the TV’s HDMI input. For device-specific instructions, see Samsung’s external-device connection guidance or LG’s set-top-box instructions.
- Turn on the TV and source. If the TV does not switch to the device automatically, use the TV’s input or source control to select the HDMI port you used.
Port names, numbers, and menu labels vary by model. If you are connecting a computer, check its available ports: depending on the computer, you may need an adapter to connect it to HDMI. A legacy device with component video output may need a component-to-HDMI adapter if the TV does not have component inputs.
Which HDMI cable should you choose?
Match the cable to the capabilities required by both connected devices and the signal you intend to use. The category names below describe cable capability ceilings published by HDMI Licensing Administrator; they do not mean every TV or source supports those resolutions, refresh rates, or features.

HDMI Licensing Administrator describes QR verification for relevant certified categories. Category names are not the same thing as HDMI specification version numbers: for example, buying a cable with a higher capability rating does not add a feature the TV or source does not support. HDMI 2.2 is backward compatible with earlier HDMI specification versions, but compatibility does not make the connected equipment support newer features.

What if your device does not use HDMI?
First check the output on the source and the inputs on the TV. If a legacy source uses component video and the TV has no component input, a component-to-HDMI adapter may be required. This is a specific compatibility case, not a general requirement for new TVs. Confirm the adapter supports the connections and signal you need before purchasing it.
