Do You Need an 8-Bay NAS, or Is a 4-Bay Model Enough?

For most homes and small offices, a 4-bay NAS is enough if your current data, backup plan, and growth forecast fit four internal drives and the model has a documented expansion path. An 8-bay NAS becomes the better starting point when you expect to install more than four drives in one enclosure, need substantially more protected capacity immediately, or run workloads that justify a business-class chassis.

Bay count alone is a poor buying rule. Compare usable capacity under your intended RAID layout, how you will expand, drive and expansion-unit compatibility, workload requirements, and the complete purchase cost. The Synology DS923+ and DS1823xs+ illustrate why a smaller enclosure can remain useful for years—and why an 8-bay model can still be the right choice for a demanding deployment.

What the bay count actually tells you

A bay is a physical slot for an internal drive. A 4-bay NAS can hold four drives in its main enclosure; an 8-bay NAS can hold eight. That is the starting hardware limit, not the amount of data you can safely store. Usable space depends on drive sizes, RAID or other storage-pool layout, filesystem overhead, snapshots, and reserved space.

Protection consumes capacity. With equal-size drives, a RAID 5-style layout generally provides roughly the equivalent of one drive for parity, while RAID 6-style protection uses the equivalent of two. Mirroring stores duplicate data, so usable capacity is closer to half of the installed raw total. The exact result also depends on the NAS operating system and the smallest drive in a mixed-size set.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For example, four 12 TB drives provide 48 TB of raw capacity. A parity layout that reserves one drive’s worth of space would start near 36 TB before filesystem overhead and other reservations. That is an illustration, not a guaranteed volume size. Multiplying bay count by the label on each disk and calling the result “usable” is the most common sizing mistake.

When a 4-bay NAS is enough

Your planned drive count is four or fewer

Choose four bays when your immediate plan is one to four drives and you do not expect to need a fifth drive inside the same chassis soon. This suits photo and video libraries, workstation backups, shared documents, media serving, and similar home or small-office uses when the capacity forecast is realistic.

Start with the data you need to protect, not the empty space shown on a product page. Add existing data, the next two to three years of growth, local versions or snapshots, and a separate allowance for backup copies. If that total fits a four-drive pool with your chosen protection level, an 8-bay enclosure may add cost and idle capacity without solving a current problem.

You can expand through a supported unit

A four-bay starting point is not automatically a four-drive lifetime limit. Synology’s DS923+ is documented as a four-bay NAS that can reach nine drives when paired with one DX517 expansion unit. That gives a staged path: populate the internal bays first, then add an expansion chassis when the existing pool or a new pool requires it.

Expansion is model-specific. The NAS must support the exact expansion unit, the connection protocol, the intended drive types, and the storage-pool arrangement you plan to use. Confirm those details in the current specification and compatibility list before buying either the enclosure or disks.

You value a smaller initial system

Four internal bays normally mean fewer drives, a smaller physical footprint, and a lower initial hardware commitment than filling eight bays. No representative current prices, power consumption, noise levels, or performance differences are provided in the cited materials, so treat any savings as a planning question rather than a guaranteed percentage. Compare the actual NAS, drives, memory, networking accessories, and expansion hardware you would buy.

When an 8-bay NAS is worth it

You need more than four internal drives

If your design calls for five or more drives in one enclosure—for example, a larger parity set, separate pools, or a mix of capacity and performance tiers—an 8-bay chassis avoids an immediate expansion purchase. Eight slots also let you add drives gradually while keeping several bays available for growth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not fill every slot simply because it exists. Drives of different sizes can reduce usable capacity or complicate pool expansion, and adding a drive does not automatically increase capacity in every RAID layout. Check the NAS documentation for supported expansion procedures and restrictions.

You need high protected capacity now

An 8-bay system can provide more raw capacity before expansion, but the useful figure still depends on drive size and protection. Synology’s DS1823xs+ launch material from February 22, 2023 lists up to 144 TB of raw capacity before expansion. That is a product-specific, pre-expansion figure—not usable space—and it depends on the drive configuration.

The same release lists up to 324 TB of total raw storage with DX517 expansion units. Synology notes that usable capacity varies with the drives and RAID configuration. Treat both numbers as hardware limits under stated configurations, not as a promise that a volume will expose those amounts to applications.

Your workload resembles a small-business storage server

The DS1823xs+ product page describes an eight-bay desktop storage server aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. That positioning matters: a model in this class may be selected for continuous backups, surveillance archives, virtualization storage, or many simultaneous users. It should not be treated as the default recommendation for every home.

Synology product manager Julien Chen described the DS1823xs+ in a February 22, 2023 release as a “powerhouse” for heavy workloads and multitasking such as continuous backups and archiving surveillance footage. That is a vendor characterization, not an independent benchmark. For a real deployment, check the exact model’s CPU, memory options, network interfaces, supported applications, and workload limits.

Both cited NAS examples support 3.5-inch SATA hard drives, but that does not mean every SATA model is approved. Use the compatibility list for the exact NAS, firmware generation, and drive model. Also check whether SSDs, mixed media, or particular capacities have restrictions.

Compare usable capacity, not bay count

Build a capacity worksheet

  1. Measure current data. Include computers, phones, media projects, shared folders, and application data that will actually live on the NAS.
  2. Estimate growth. Use your recent annual increase where you have records; otherwise create a conservative three-year estimate for work files, photos, video, and surveillance retention.
  3. Add protection overhead. Decide whether you need single-drive or dual-drive fault tolerance, mirroring, snapshots, or versioned backups.
  4. Model the smallest drive. In many arrays, extra capacity on a larger disk cannot be fully used until the other drives are upgraded.
  5. Leave working headroom. Keep free space for snapshots, rebuilds, temporary files, and future expansion rather than targeting a nearly full volume.

Choose protection before counting bays

For four equal drives, a single-parity layout generally leaves about three drives’ worth of capacity and tolerates one drive failure. Dual-parity leaves about two drives’ worth and tolerates two failures. Mirroring can provide strong redundancy and predictable rebuild behavior but sacrifices more capacity. These are planning approximations; consult the NAS documentation for the exact implementation and usable result.

With eight drives, the same protection choices produce a larger pool, but rebuild time, exposure during a rebuild, and operational complexity also matter. More bays do not remove the need for a separate backup: RAID protects availability after some drive failures, not against deletion, malware, theft, fire, or a damaged NAS.

Evaluate the growth route

Fill the internal bays first

This is usually the simplest path. Buy a four-bay unit, install a protection layout that matches your risk tolerance, and add compatible drives as the documented expansion procedure allows. Check whether your NAS can expand an existing pool, requires a new pool, or imposes drive-order and size rules.

Add an expansion chassis

The DS923+ example reaches nine drives with one DX517, while the DS1823xs+ example reaches up to 18 bays with two DX517 units. Expansion can defer a larger enclosure purchase, but it introduces another chassis, connection cable, power supply, and compatibility dependency. Determine whether the expansion unit can be managed as part of the same storage pool and what happens if its connection fails.

Buy eight bays from the start

An 8-bay purchase can be cheaper and less disruptive than replacing a four-bay NAS later if your forecast clearly exceeds four internal drives. It also avoids moving data between enclosures when you need more slots. Conversely, paying for eight bays that remain empty for years ties up budget and physical space; compare that opportunity cost with the price of a supported expansion route.

Match the enclosure to the workload

Home backup and file sharing

A four-bay NAS is generally the sensible baseline when the main jobs are computer backups, a family photo library, document sharing, and occasional media streaming. Prioritize backup software support, quiet placement, drive compatibility, and a reliable second copy over maximum bay count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large media and creative projects

Video libraries and project files can grow quickly. Estimate ingest rate, retention, and the number of editors or clients accessing data concurrently. If the forecast requires more than four drives or multiple pools, start with eight bays; if capacity fits four drives, a faster network link or SSD cache—where supported—may matter more than empty slots.

Surveillance retention

Camera recording consumes space continuously. Calculate camera count, resolution, frame rate, motion settings, and retention days, then add a failure-tolerant layout. The eight-bay class is more plausible when recordings must remain online for long periods or when many cameras run alongside backups and file services.

Virtualization and business services

Virtual machines and databases can create sustained random I/O and require predictable recovery. Examine the exact model’s processor, memory ceiling, network options, application support, and vendor limits. An eight-bay business-oriented unit may be appropriate, but bay count alone does not establish performance.

Compatibility and total-system checks

  • Confirm the exact NAS model supports the intended expansion unit and the number of units you plan to attach.
  • Check the current drive compatibility list, including capacity, interface, sector format, and firmware requirements.
  • Verify that the RAID or storage-pool migration you want is documented; expansion may not work across every layout.
  • Budget for drives, memory upgrades if required, network equipment, an uninterruptible power supply, and a separate backup target.
  • Check current availability and pricing at the time of purchase. The cited materials do not provide a current retailer comparison.
  • Plan replacement drives and rebuild procedures before the first failure occurs.

A practical decision process

  1. Set the three-year usable-capacity target. Include protection, snapshots, and free-space headroom.
  2. Translate that target into drives. Test several drive sizes and RAID layouts using the NAS maker’s calculator or documentation.
  3. Count required internal slots. If the plan needs five or more drives immediately, choose eight bays. If it needs four or fewer, continue.
  4. Test the growth route. Confirm whether a supported expansion unit reaches your projected drive count and whether its cost and complexity fit your budget.
  5. Validate the workload. Compare networking, memory, applications, and vendor support for the exact model, not just the enclosure size.
  6. Price the complete system. Compare a four-bay NAS plus later expansion with an eight-bay NAS bought now, using current prices for every component.
  7. Document recovery. Keep a separate, tested backup and write down how to replace a failed drive, restore data, and recover if the NAS itself is lost.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming raw capacity is usable

Raw figures such as 144 TB or 324 TB do not account for parity, mirroring, filesystem overhead, snapshots, or reserved space. Label every capacity estimate as raw or usable and state the RAID assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying unsupported drives or expansion hardware

“3.5-inch SATA” describes an interface and form factor, not universal compatibility. Check the model-specific list and expansion documentation before ordering.

Choosing eight bays for performance alone

Additional slots can increase capacity and pool flexibility, but they do not guarantee faster file transfers or virtual machines. Network speed, processor, memory, drive type, and workload determine performance.

Treating RAID as a backup

RAID can keep a service running after certain drive failures. It cannot restore files deleted by a user or encrypted by malware. Maintain an independent backup and test restoration.

Ignoring the second purchase

A four-bay NAS with a future expansion unit may eventually cost more than an eight-bay system, while an eight-bay NAS bought too early may leave budget locked in unused capacity. Make both complete bills of materials before deciding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom-line choice

Choose a 4-bay NAS when four drives cover your calculated usable-capacity target, your workload fits the model, and a documented expansion route can handle expected growth. The DS923+ demonstrates that a four-bay starting point can reach nine drives with one DX517.

Choose an 8-bay NAS when you need more than four internal drives now, require a large protected pool immediately, or run a workload suited to a business-class storage server. The DS1823xs+ demonstrates eight SATA bays and expansion to up to 18 bays with two DX517 units, but its business positioning and higher system complexity make it a deliberate choice rather than a universal upgrade.

Whichever size you select, calculate usable capacity under the intended RAID layout, verify exact drive and expansion compatibility, and compare the complete system cost before ordering.
